barracuda's are fast enough for my documents folder to be move over to, and temp folder, and they are fast enough for old games you rarely play if you defrag them with o&o defrag, then you don't have to wipe the MFT of the partition every month, unless you don't use a RAMDISK for internet browser cache

- Nothing wrong with the 256GB SSds, I just wouldn’t buy such a small storage in 2019, it's simply not future proof, when you can buy bigger for just a little more (ofc, it's ok if it's a leftover from a previous build, nothing wrong with it if that's the case)

- 3x1GB Barracuda is not enough for a raid array (well, technically you could have a 2TB in raid5, but that's small and slow, so no point), so if you are not building a fast array of HDDs, better to go for a large single drive (for example, compared to a single 4TB drive, 3x1 TB means more noise, more vibration,higher price and less space).

ps.: ignore the complete archaic nonsense about ram disks, disk defragmenting and also about putting active system files to a HDD in the year 2019 (like temp for example... wtf...really). Also - no offense, but - people who say that raid is for backup simply don't know how computers work

Well if it's in raid I understand it's a bit stupid, I got two 2tb barracudas just to organize my less important stuff. Nvme for OS and then some SSds for programs and important documents etc., but I'm quite certain I fucked something up with the set up because my computer freezes for a couple of seconds every now and then at random moments but mostly when I go inside a "cold" drive. :/

Well, there are downsides as I described above, but if 2TB is enough for you, then it's not that bad (don't forget that I was reflecting to a "new build" proposal). HDDs are great for low speed storage (for picture, rarely played SP games, media for example, to store movies, music, etc. if you don't have a NAS or a decent router available)

Just don't forget that raid is never backup, don't think of it like that. You can have a disaster where two or all three drives drop dead in an instant any time (literally), or a 0day crypto can eat the whole array in no time. When a disaster strikes, you need to have backed up stuff (backups) to restore your data to the computer.

Raid is for performance and redundancy, with 3 drives in a raid5 array, you can survive a single drive failure, start to back up stuff to the nas or into the cloud and (soonish) go to the store to buy a replacement, all that while the system continues to work, that's the point of redundancy.

Freezes can happen for many things, it would be impossible to pinpoint the cause from this little info, but I would start with the drivers. Disabling Intel Rapid Raid tech in bios and uninstalling its windows part would be my first try (assuming it is not needed for boot or anything, so no nvme raid for example).

PS fun fact: Onboard raid controllers are not that good anyways, for example, even with a simple raid 1 (mirror) array, a decent enterprise controller can do almost 100% load balancing, which means that a raid 1 array would almost seek and read twice as fast as a single drive would. Most of the onboard solutions will only do 1.3-1.5x in the same scenario.

ANSYS Mechanical licenses by cores, you get 2 for free and need licenses for additional ones if you want to use more than 2 cores. Rumour has it, that with a pirate version that included one single license of any available kind, you max out at an usage of 4 cores. Due to old architecture, some CAD applications don't take any advantage of high core counts aswell. On the other hand, fluid solvers utilise way more cores and scale "superlinear".
Aynway, the Ryzen 5 generations offer the best bang for buck, good allround performance regarding singlecore/multicore-applications and are definetly sufficient for CAD/FEM/CFX of cheap academic students.

But to be honest, I seriously doubt that p0rt is involved in any kind of engineering simulations, since he believes that a gypsy on Youtube broke the laws of thermodynamics by building a perpetual motion machine with glue.

or get AIDA64 and use its bandwidth tests, if physical RAM is slower, then bottleneck can happen, if texture's arn't already rendered and stored in VRAM and the card request's them from a virtual texture cache in physical RAM like doom 2016, if RAM is slower, you can bottlenecking and texture popping, or there is too much bottlenecking and the card just skips the texture all together and gives you a blue or red texture instead

If you're not intersted in overclocking then go for a mobo like the Asus X570 Prime Pro, good value and keeps the door open for using pcie gen 4 nvme ssd disks in the future, eventually gpus too. Ram I'd go for 3600mhz low latency memory, like cas 16 or maybe even 15 if you can find it for a good price. It could be a point in buying 3800mhz (low latency) memory and change one setting in bios to get the best from them. But dont pay like double the money on low latency memory compared to more standard memory, it's definately not worth that. The so called Infinityfabric on the Ryzen 3000 series cpus works best with 3600mhz out of the box. Psu, something not "noname" 650-750w 80+ gold certified, Seasonic make nice psus. I would actually go for an AIO (all in one) liquid cooler for the cpu but that's perhaps just me. If I went air I would propably buy a Noctua or Coolermaster cpu cooler.

FX to a Ryzen 5 isn't worth bothering with, the FSB is 100mhz, and RAM latency is 100ns, they are slow has hell, as far as the 2600 goes, my FX ram latency with my overclock timings were 11ns but i had to put my g.skill trident sticks to 2.1 volt, so i kept 60ns at 1.80 volt

You are comparing ddr3 vs ddr4, the latter is a different technology with higher latency.
Also leave BCLK and FSB alone, because touching those with Infinity Fabric will add more latency, you should get 40-70ns depending on the speed and quality of the CPU and the RAM you have.

There shouldn't be any difference at all between 3600X and non X. What does matter is motherboard and what functionality it have wheni it comes to overclocking memory. My mobo is really bad for memory overclocking since you can't raise ram boot voltage which you need for the mobo to be able to run memory training thus I'm pretty much left to the xmp profile and nothing more.

I assume that is where p0rt failed:
RAM overclocking depends on the motherboard and of course the RAM modules.
CPU overclocking depends on the motherboard, cooling and of course the CPU.
(The only restriction I am aware of, is that non-K Intel CPUs can't overclock and some motherboards are kind of wonky [power delivery, settings, thermals and so on].)
So he mixed up RAM overclocking on AMD with CPU overclocking on Intel's non-K series, that is a double fail. (See his comment #70.)
But it seems that by now, he managed to overclock his AMD non-X CPU.

I haven't thought of that, but you could be right: What if p0rt can't manually overclock his RAM, because his motherboard's BIOS blocks the settings whenever it is set to use an XMP configuration. All Ryzens that I know of are unlocked, the problem is rather that they don't offer much overclocking headroom:
From my understanding, AMD's chiplet design and their own binning helps them to reduce yield and adjust prices.
Meaning, that they test a chiplet, if it underperforms it will get used for a non-X-CPU and if it overperforms it will get used for a X-CPU.
This also explains why a couple of weeks ago, as Silicon Lottery released their binning statistics, it showed that Ryzens perform close to their specifications and don't reach high overclocks.
Some might think this is negative because it doesn't offer much overclocking headroom; but I think it is highly positive since the part I buy performs tightly bound to the specifications that I paid for and basically AMD already did all the coarse overclocking work for me.
Either way, AMD's non-X Ryzens can overclock, which is more generous than what Intel does.

I never tested it, but I assume that with directly playing around in the BIOS options, you can apply more agressive overclocks than with Ryzen Master, but:
- Ryzen Master is enough for me,
- I don't have the time for such fiddling,
and
- longevity aswell as secure stability is more important to me, than squeezing out 0.1% in an irrelevant synthetic benchmark.

if they are locked, its the FSB which is locked, you can't change that, or your PC will need the CMOS cleared and battery taken out and left for a day for it to boot again

Ryzen 5 2600 is the best bang for buck, if you can't afford Ryzen 5 3600.

The x570 platform's only advantage at the time are high end SSDs that need PCIe 4.0, while except for one ultra expensive motherboard they have annoying active cooling.

Test results showed, that you can also buy lower MHz RAM with lower timings and then overclock the Infinity Fabric in order to get similar performance.

As far as I remember Patriot SSDs have poor performance and I really don't understand what you need it for along with all your NVMes and HDDs.

In my opinion, liquid AIOs are more expensive, less performing and less durable than solid air coolers. Since Ryzens have rather low TDP anyway, you can still overclock or undercool (Ryzen 3rd gen seems to scale with cooling even without overclocking due to boosting behaviour) easily with air cooling.

That is the most irrelevant purchasing parameter someone could possibly come up with, for real.
When building a system, you tailor to the workloads it will encounter everyday; gaming, video editing, simulations or whatever.
That is why nobody cares about record breaking performance under liquid nitrogen, because extreme overclocking isn't a typical workload your system will encounter on a regular basis.
On top of that, you would need a LN2-pot instead of your AIO water cooling and I can't imagine any reasonable person selling you a canister of liquid nitrogen or even worse, liquid helium.

But if you really think you need x570 because of PCIe 4.0 and the abstract capability of extreme overclocking, go for it.
