[UPDATE] Bad sound appears to be normal. An audio designer at ID Software is probably deaf :)

Hello ESR,

Last time I posted here was maybe 15 years ago: ah well! :)

I tried to reinstall the game to get into fragging, but now I have a problem; everytime a deadbody is destroyed (by a rocket explosion, a telefrag, you name it...) then I hear a disgusting BZZZZT sound.

I tried to:
- google it (sic)
- reinstall windows 10
- update all sound drivers
- set all s_ values to their original state (mixahead, prestep... what not)
- do a cvar_restart
- reinstall the game... and redo all previous steps above

Still, BZZZZT.

Any suggestions are welcome !

Thanks to CHFL for trying to help while getting fragged in RA ;)

You can hear the sond twice: when I frag the dead body, and when I get fragged while trying to stop the recording :)

that's the normal default sound, try enabling gibs via steam workshop if you want a meaty sound

Whoah you're right, adding this package removed the stupid sound.
But now I have vsual blood & gibs, while I don't want any.

- Is there a package that only changes the sound?
- Or how to edit this package to remove the visuals?

Ideally, gibbing should be silent + invisible. But I can't find a package that does the trick on the workshop.

If you want the meaty sound you are stuck with the blood and gibs visuals.

There's no way to achieve the combination of visuals and sounds that you are asking for as far as I know. You're not the only one that's unhappy with this combination either :/

I'm positive this sound changes at some point: I played competitive early QL, and the sound wasn't that bad.

Dunno if it's something on my side (PC, me growing old) or due to an update.

Hmmm... If I'm not mistaken there is a "bzzzt" when you frag someone, if you rather want the "meatier" Q3 sound I think you need to install the gibs pack from the Steam workshop. I could be wrong and maybe Stphn can help me out here? xD

I've played QL since day one of the beta and the sound was always there, a pure replacement from the gibs I'm afraid.

Actually I think he means when a dead body is 'gibbed', one that is already on the floor and gets blown up. Not the sound when you make a frag.

yeah you're right, it was late, he did explicitly say a dead body.

They should reset workshops, reset config (see https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=560709175 ) , test, if that doesn't help then it's a driver or hardware problem probably.

Appleseed, perhaps you could try the following:
1. go to your advanced options on your sound card, go to 'enhancements' and make sure 'disable all enhancements' is off.
2. manually delete all pk3 files in your QL directory and let steam re-download them.
3. reset your config to default and test with the default settings.
4. long shot - but if your headphones are damaged perhaps a certain frequency is causing them to fuck up. Try something else just in case.
5. make sure your volume in QL isn't set too high, causing certain sounds to hit peak volume.

Hey Storm,

And first, thanks for the ideas.

1- Done, problem happens with both settings (on/off)
2- Done, I reinstalled the whole game, problem happens beofre / after
3- Done, problem happens with default cfg as well
4- Done, tried with speakers and with another headset, problem happens with all 3 hardwares
5- Done, I reduced it in Windows & ingame, problem still happens

No luck so far, even though these were fair points.

That's the default gibbing sound, its not a bug. When put your gfx to high you see sparks flying around instead of gibs when gibbing people, hence the pzzzt sound.

No idea if you can get rid of it without installing the steam workshop gibs package.

That's the new default? OMG... ID Software made this game worse over the years...

So I'll have to change my question to:

- How do you change this crap?
- How do you reduce the VFX when a body is fragged?

If you wanna change it try installing the gibs pak in Steam workshop, that will give you classic Q3 gibs and gibs sounds.

- just a thought though. This sounds normal and smooth to me. If you think this sounds harsh or grating then that might mean your headphones are faulty.
