They made most of the abilities too strong, that is the problem. Doom slayers rage punches is a further step over the limit on a whole new level. With the increased healthpool it will balance it out slightly, but most likely not enough.

You're missing the main problem with abilities - in a shooter(or arcade fighter) pressing a single button to perform some sort of special is just bad game design. It removes the skill from execution. That's fine in a moba or an rts, but not in a shooter.

I dunno man, I'm having fun with them, the game would do great without them of course but my biggest concern is most of them are too strong.

a special move on a keyboard is much harder to execute than on a stick or pad, so your analogy is meh.

The problem is.

Outside of duel, you have no idea if opponent has it or not, so many of them = push button kill or so powerful you cant fail to not kill the opponent.

Not so bad in any mode outside of duel, but if those free kills are being used to steal quads, then taking down a stacked tank with quad, with nothing more than two quick taps of a dire orbb seems a bit rough.

In all honesty, I think people are ok with the abilities, they know its a bit of a gimmick, sometimes you get screwed by them, but you screw others with them too and sometimes its the only way noobs can make a kill.

Aside from what Nzr0 said and that I have issues with a few particular abilities, in general I think it's stupid you don't have to do anything to earn them. If they were only charged by doing a certain amount of damage or number of frags. I think it would be much better than it is now.

I like the idea of charging from dealing damage. The opponent is just going to restack anyway. It might lead to less defensive play.

More random is definitely bad. Its good for casual players and for crazy unexpected tournament results, but its bad for the game at high level and it makes actually watching QC duels really boring because nothing makes sense and theres no momentum swing of power from one player to another

Its just a constant state of contested control where anyone could win any fight so casters can only really talk about the shots after the fact

Occasionally someones ability being up or down adds something to talk about briefly but its not a good enough substitute

While it has not rendered the game unplayable and might present some interesting dynamics, it's not like they invested any thought into why exactly Quake needs champions. They just implemented whatever the current fad is. If the game had been released 7 years ago, it would have featured health regen and aim-down-sights.

The randomness factor like mentioned in FPS games is also a no go.

In a "Normal" Quake game, you have a lot of control of the outcome of the game, you're either better or worse than your enemy, your timing is either on or off that day etc.

Now when you add abilities in then you can say it's also one of those skills acquired but then it's also more random really. Nyx's get out of jail free card ability which if you use it correctly can stop you from being caught out of position or take a fight with the wrong weapon etc. Anarki's ability to re-stack your health if you're about to lose a fight, Doom's OnePunchMan ability which atm is pretty broken.

(I don't like the abilities, but I do like the aesthetic of the game, well with slight improvements to visibility of the enemies, that'd be nice.)

Quake champions cost extremely little to make by modern game standards.

That was the whole point of outsorcing the most expensive and labor intensive part to Saber: a small, unknown company on the verge of bankrupt after having been anally probed by microsoft and left out in the cold; they were desperate and accepted to be Id's overseas slaves for peanuts.

The donut crew did very little outside wanking. Thus, even if they didn't sell much compared to other games, they spent very little so they're vastly in the net positive.

They could actually discard the game right now, and it would have been a success, economically. Of course it wouldn't make sense, there's still quite a lot to milk out of it, and always doing extremely little work.

Changing a health value here, a speed cap there... and occasionally releasing a "new" character, but only every few months. ridicolously little volume of work, but you look busy, you know?

And you get to be interviewed as exponents of the glorious arena genre, legendary id legacy, bla bla bla.

Don't forget the sporadical big tourney partnership. That won't last very long, but i mean, look at what they did with quake 4 and, better, with quake live: how long did they drag on? And always in the economically net positivity. They have very little expenses, the quake champions project will probably last at least a couple of years from now. Huge success. Huge scam also, but that's the whole point of the industry, often.

I have no idea. But they sold quite a lot of copies at 10 euros each. It's been cheaper but that's been its price most of the time. It all depends on how many licenses they sold, and it's probably a number big enough to greatly compensate the mini "team" "working on it while it was still "patched" every once in a while. As of right now, it doesn't even cost that. Anyone knows the number of unique players?

All I ever read about these things from these guys is extremely vague assumptions.

I doubt champs has sold more than 100,000 copies across steam and Bethesda launcher.

When you consider they've committed to about 1.2 million in prize money, add in the dev costs for past, present, future. I would be surprised if its in profit.

anyway, only thing they need to worry about right now is twitch viewership hitting rock bottom. shows 0 interest from general public in a new quake game. lack of players can be justified with lack of marketing and according to copies sold, even if 50% of that is humble bundle it's quite decent for something not marketed at all yet.
