The competition was a lot bigger in any case... and that alone made the game far more interesting to watch/follow. We had sunday cups, saturday cups, 4-5 LANS per year and the playstyles was a lot deverse while now everyone except 2-3 players plays the same and even those 2-3 are mostly that. Sadly ql times where around 2010 and are long gone.

Relatively, yes. Objectively, no. Of course players are better now.

Still, relatively > objectively. It's much more of an accomplishment to win when the game matters, than after everyone is long retired. It's about who is competing and how much effort they are putting.

But again, "winning online" is not winning, therefore a 2012 LAN win (past QL's prime and with everyone playing Shootmania) > zero LAN wins (during QL's prime). Winning > losing, no matter what.

strenx in top form would give evil a really good fight, especialy on old set of maps with aero and toxicity.

however, in general best evil will just chew him alive. simply because of rockets - strenx always had mediocre at best, while evil's maybe the best rocketeer ever along with cypher.

but its like comparing Juan Manuel Fangio and Alonso - they're from rather different eras.

Its Kevin's omission only, he has nobody to blame. He switched to other FPS and couldn't come back to his top form when shootmania failed.

Funny fact, Strenx said that he regrets stopping to play QL and letting Evil to become a dominant he was himself...

Evil and Strenx are basically the same player, but Evil hits better rockets than Strenx ever did.

They are the same right down to the mouse with hardware accel.

From what Q3 footage I've seen of Evil (asus lan's), he wasn't a 'push lg suka' type player back then, in QL he saw strenx's style and thought ok I can do that, and he went and did it, nothing more to be said about it imo lol.

One other slight difference on frag style, Strenx was LG to SG, Evil LG to RL

BUT neither of them will ever match cyphers mindgames and general gift for the game, he is/was an artist.

ofc, cypher at his peak will always be the best QL player ever hands down. He was just so smooth, so in control of the map. Just watch any Aero game he's played, he just eats people alive in control, so aware.

was it the IEM where strenx beat cooller on dm13? or qcon. I dont remember but somewhere in the semis he did that and you should go watch strenx's rockets in that series... they were on point

more experienced how? in the showmatch they played it was clear that strenx had played house of decay many times, yet evil barely knew the map. they are both old Q3 players and each have their better maps.

strenx started playing duel by the end of Q3. He previously was a lol instagib player. Evil was at the top of the duel scene since the very beginning of Q3, but didn't attend to international LANs. He is as experienced as cooller is, if not more so considering evil didn't play (much) Q4.

House of Decay is a QL map (I think from the Dreamcast release whatever), not from Q3.

evil is the best ql player ever. best overall aim, best fighting skills and dodge, great movement, very versatile. his timing sucks ballz though, and thats what loses him games. that and inconsistency in some games.
and on lans, he did far better than strenx or even cooller or avek, considering he went against rapha, who pwnt all of the 3 mentioned at lans. evil should have won that first qc final vs rapha, and played very well in the second final, just didnt go his way

Actually from what I have seen during the years Evil never stopped improving his game. His timing is way better now, and it is very hard to regain control from him, even Agent struggles with that. He is the best chaser I have ever seen in Quake and able to turn around impossible games. He kinda invented the style of giving away major items for better position or to push for another frag. I always thought Cooller has the best rocket dodge in the game but I keep reading players saying how good Evil's dodging is, and recently I have seen Evil doing some insane moves (making agent swear in the last cup about those "fucking dances"). I really hope Evil will finally show his full potential on QuakeCon because if he does, I don't think anyone can beat him.

That style has being known for a while. Cypher would often play that way against noobs and sometimes against the likes of strenx. Imo Evil invented the bruteforce, dirty fragging, why should i respect you when you can't even punish me for it style although sometimes this style bites him in the ass when he keeps dying at item contesting positions.

Actually I have never seen anyone else do it to that extent. Evil just leaves the item sit there and goes to the other end of the map just to surprise the opponent. I must admit this strategy doesn't work very well with agent and I have seen it failing against Cypher several times before. Anyways nowadays it is way more refined and I truly believe Evil has to thank Agent for that :)

One other thing that Evil can improve imo is his defensive game. While it is top class, it is still a level below Cypher or Rapha's. Well, it is probably a style thing, and I really prefer the aggressive style of Evil, so I can live with some weaknesses in the defense :)

Yea i think evil will do much better this quakecon now that he has a better grasp on how item whores play. Also unless evil purposely plays handicapped i don't think we'll ever see him work on his defensive game much simply because he never needs to but i think with his years of experience he has a pretty good understanding like we've seen with that one sinister game against cypher.
