I liked the music, and the config, the editing got a bit annoying (is that a solar flare at the start? In 2016?), the frags were pretty average and repetitive. 6/10.

once I saw fearzzz attacking people on purgatory who were oblivious to the fact they were right on MH i got pretty disheartened. weak frags for sure, although there were some really nice once as well (ash vs khan @ t7 RA room)

Heh, a few good frags, lots boring ones though. Why are there dm6 frags in 2016? B/ Although its better than the last QL movie I saw (was posted recently) where 50% of the frags were LG pins on the MH on Furious Heights.

I wouldn't go that far. It does add a bit of value but a crazy, funny, or lucky frag can still be entertaining even if it's against some random. I'd rather watch an awesome frag against a random than a boring, every day frag against a top player.

A lot of the frags maybe routine for high tier players- But it looks like people having a shitload of fun playing Quake- like the dreamy vibe and song too

j/k guise 10/10. Some minor things such as fov and slight loss of momentum in second half were pushing me towards 9/10 but fearzzz definitely made up for it. motherfucking boss.

I don't really like being overly negative about other people's work in public, so I'll try to be as respectful as I can while being honest.

+ There are some really good frags distributed well enough to always keep the smile on the viewer's face.
+ The audio isn't fucked up like in almost every fragmovie.
- Most of the recams don't help appreciate or understand the frags better.
- The slow-fast-slow-fast effect gets annoying after a few times.
- I found the music to be just forgettable.
- Not enough of the music gets sync'd to the video to feel satisfying.
- Some text is shown on screen for too little time to be readable. (the frag message at 1:14, the "grand final" text at 5:21, etc). Yes, some of it was on purpose like the XXX at XXX.
- The Quake audio is mixed in too low for my taste, the hit beeps and other sounds feel like they have no "impact".
In fragmovies with good A/V sync and mixing, the sound combo of the rail/explosion + hit beep + beat feels really satisfying.
- There are frame-rate conversion issues (Example: at 1:44, the video is choppy and you can clearly see that some frames were dropped).
- The 2.35:1 aspect ratio is wasting lots of space on most people's screens.
- Packaging the video in an archive doesn't help with compression and prohibits from reading the file while downloading.
You could just have 2 files, 1 for the video and 1 for an archive that's a download for those interested in the extras (screenshots, readme, demos, configs, etc).
- Posting on ESR before the 60 FPS version is uploaded when it's the one that's the most sought after.

The video was entertaining thanks to the frags but most of the editing made it less enjoyable to watch for me.

Also, to be clear, many of the fine details aren't things I was looking for to bash on the product, it's just things I noticed and thought were worth mentioning.
The aspect ratio, file packing, etc aren't things that made me enjoy the movie less or influenced my rating. I rate based on how much I get entertained only.
Only if some technicality gets in the way of entertainment does it (indirectly) influence the entertainment value (like super clipped audio, blurry video encoding, etc).

About aspect ratio, I have the Acer predator z35 ultra-widescreen and was pleasantly surprised when this frag movie filled my whole screen with its glory =)

Hence the usage of "mostly" instead of "all". I don't dispute the existence of those screens. :-)
I wonder how many games have UI issues with that kind of aspect ratio nowadays. Old games certainly do. What's your experience with this?

Very odd! For instance: Unreal 1 from 1998 runs at 2560x1080 perfectly, aspect is perfect. But some games from even 2016 like Fallout 4 don't even support it... retro games aren't just better games, they're better technology too! haha :)

To me, it's passable (6/10). I rate on entertainment value only. The good frags sustain just enough interest to keep watching in the hope of seeing more of them. The annoying things (primarily the recams showing nothing of interest and the slow-fast effect abuse) aren't enough to make me close the video player.

What?!? This has incredible synchronization with music and frags. I'm pretty sure he captured at a really high fps and used dynamic timescales to sync a lot of stuff.

Regarding aspect and text, that's style. I love it. I can see two seconds of a wntt movie and know it's his. It's unique and tasteful. The same could be said of other great editors ( particularly kos and pez but maybe also entik, ashr, and wussie). Unfortunately not enough people have a unique visual style and so most movies end up looking just like any other.

Because it's the first annoyance I experienced and it really was not necessary. I didn't mention it to increase the list of negative points, I mentioned it so it can be handled better next time. What's lazy about mentioning things that can be done better and then explaining why and how?

No, the video author isn't the one who posted on ESR and the post is fine. If there was something wrong with either of them, some admin would have fixed the post anyway.
As mind-blowing as it may seem to you, I wasn't trying to find more flaws. It's just something I mentioned in the hope that it's handled better next time.

It doesn't come off that way. A long list of minuses with a couple pluses at the bottom, one of which is kind of under handedly negative.

It's these kinds of reviews that make me smh.

Any bozo with a computer can capture frags, put music to them, loosely sync them, and call it a frag movie (or "collection" (c) zoot). I know because I've made a few. It's not hard and no one is going to win an Oscar or BAFTA for it. We do it because we love quake and like to entertain.

There's lots of quake movies out there that are generic. Lots of the same frags and same type of editing (bland). The only thing that often distinguishes them is the music. But there are the rare editors out there that make movies that are more than the sum of their parts. Wntt does that here. The editing here is as good as the frags. The cuts are sleek and sometimes unexpected. The use of bloom and filters is tasteful and not obnoxious or overdone. And the entire movie exudes a style that no one but wntt has.

The guy knows what he's doing and it's a shame when I see people who can't appreciate it.

The biggest problem I have with this is that the video doesn't service the content all too well. The recams don't help the viewer understand or appreciate the frags better. There's recams for frags everyone understands immediately but some with amazing angles don't have any.

For instance, the double double rail frag by flair. How many viewers understood he killed 4 people with 2 consecutive rails on first watch? The small recam at the end can help you understand the second hit was a double rail, but some people may have missed the fact on the first one. The frag message wasn't even changed even though it's a very simple thing to do and it conveys the information effectively.

I don't appreciate the esthetic because, imho, it doesn't show the content in a better light than simply showing everything in first person.

Slick but not pretentious. Straight and to the point. Several subtleties. The selective use of slow mo and third-person didn't relish in the frags but rather smiled at them. The movie really shows how beautiful the game is in the tight mouse movement, sharp weapon switches, patience of players, constant clambering over positions, and especially in the movement of fearzzz.

Not perfect as others point out, but by the end, it reminds me that even though life gets in the way, I'll always manage to squeeze in a duel every few months and remember Quake. Thanks.

Oh, first impression was that this movie was well done. Detailed and had some 3rd person scenes. Nicely done and well cut.
Had some players i recognized and nice frags! Yey!

But it did hurt my eyes due the low fps.

Music was beautiful, but it did remove the feeling of a "cool action movie" for me. Totally ok anyways!
Then slow-to-fast-to-slowmotion started to grow. i bared to watch some of it, but one-third of the movie, i closed it.

because so many different gametypes are mixed in it, you can never expect the next kind of frag that'll happen and that alone keeps it interesting for me.

Thats why I called it shallow. There have been other (successful) attempts where fragmovies created an interesting structure and even small narrative elements. But well, thats what most people always go for, which is style over substance. Guess which one is harder to achieve :)

By the way how on earth are the slowmo scenes so smooth? Whenever I try to use these timescales the player movement is invariably affected by the godawful model lurching/jerking, no exceptions.

Taking into account that's the movie is 30fps, it's smooth af, especially once downloaded and not off youtube. Looking forward to the 60fps version, will be even smoother!

I think its recorded with an extremly high framerate 240, 300 maybe even higher. so you have more options in your editing software.

I'm revising this score to 10/10. I think it might be the best Quake movie. The quality of the frags is unsurpassed. I am no film student but at the base of a good film must lie the quality of the footage that will then be edited into some kind of movie. In this case the editor's choice of footage (i.e. frags) is impeccable. Then, from an editing standpoint, wntt has shown this footage in a natural way that emphasises, devoid of excess or pretension, but still with prowess and subtlety, what is exciting or attractive within the footage. Now, other Quake movie editors have done well to approach a fulfilment of this basic formula but I think wntt more or less hit the target here.

Also, look, I'm not a big fan of the downer/stoner music. It's not my stylistic go-to. I disavow 'chasing the dragon' and all that that alludes to. But it's a romantic, artistic choice that he was going for and it is not done excessively. It is cohesive and sensible within the confines of style and genre. Whatever that means.

Anyway, just my 2c on a movie that I think deserves a lot more attention than what it received at the time.
