Since you're from NA... The overall scene is much smaller than it was a year ago. The CA scene is where most of the activity is, but it's also a lot of 8v8 and 12v12 type stuff with unbalanced teams, so it can be fairly shitty. FFA scene is sadly a lot smaller than it was, but there's usually at least one decent active server in the evenings. Unfortunately due to the lack of a hard player cap, these servers often have 20-30 players in one arena, which is completely awful and breaks the game in numerous ways. Overall the servers are worse than what id provided. All the servers are community run, mostly VPSs. Some of the servers are really bad, some are pretty good... Depends on the host. Plenty active in europe, but ctf has stalled unfortunately. I miss pub ctf going all day on multiple servers.

Nowadays QL is about CA/Duel

Since ql went steam gamemodes like freezetag and ffa have become active again, thats good but we need more active ctf servers for variety.

It's great. You get 7 guys rail camping at T spawn and the bomb carrier pretending he's AFK, so he can bait it out and have his hero moment.
Mind you, it's nice to play that map and not spend half the game staring at a white screen because idiot teammates keep buying flashes they don't know how to use.
It really shows how shit the movement physics are in CS, when you can start at T spawn, go up long, through short, up mid, over T plat, through lower B tunnel, through mid doors, thrrough window, through upper B tunnel, back over T plat, and get back to T spawn with Quake physics, in the same time it takes to buy an AWP and peek long doors with CS physics.
CS would be so much more fun if you could move properly.

I for one never played that map in my life... and I doubt it's uncommon among Quake players. That post could have been either from a disgruntled CS players or a proud non-CS player.

I never missed it. You were joking about how overplayed Dust II is in CS. But you did it on a forum for a different game. If you join a CS game on dust II and say, "Ahhh...DM6 again", you wouldn't expect people to get it, would you?

ca has not changed one but out of 100 games 40 are dm6 40 overkill rest hidden fortress and almost lost. 1 in a 100 games is an unconventional map. entirely new maps i have not seen one yet.

Im not playing in Europe, so maybe its different where you are. About 1 in 5 games for me is a custom map.

People use that, yes. Unfortunately you cant really filter the workshop items for, lets say, maps (theres about 500 items in the workshop), so you have to manually search through them, but theres lots of gems.

I see, that workshop system feels quite "unfinished" with the lack of those filtering options.

there are filtering options, but nobody bothers to tag their options properly. anyway, stop being so neurotic, it doesnt change anything about the content

I don't think there's actually a way to tag workshop items. I believe it's a valve only thing.

The workshop has a lot of re-releases of old maps, or dumb gimmick maps. I haven't really seen anything new and exciting on there. Lots of maps I've seen are just a bunch of platforms and corridors too, without much interesting geometry to play around :(

it isn't doing well... but I hope it will improve, since the community is still settling down.

started playing again after the switch and was nothing like before summer that I stopped playing.

of course, the players are now distributed over more servers and for a long time there were no valuable stats and match making.

i think there a few old timers that started playing again, but mostly on private or listen servers, since the level of duel players in public after the update has gone even higher (I feel that many from middle tier dropped and now the servers are mostly populated by top players). The absence of elo and a way to tracking ur progress, imo made things much worse. Now, there is qlstats.net, thanks to predator and things start to settle down. Let's hope it will improve.

Feels the exact opposite for me. But maybe I just got better since Im not tempted to look up the elo of my opponent anymore.

Eu CA and FFA are alive and well. 1v1, 2v2, 4v4 and 8v8 servers with minobot autoshuffle, autobalance, and ELO support. you'll get more 10-9 end results in a week than you've seen in years of standalone QL.

ah. We hosted a crouchsliding duel cup if you didnt catch it. Pretty much the only version of duel I play now

As ever a big part of the problem seems to be players just refuse to join empty or very sparsely populated serves and wait around.

EU -

CTF - The 2 omega servers tend to be packed every night with 5v5 full and 6 specs.
- iCTF seems to have a few players on
- rocket only CTF has someone on atm, not spotted that before.

FFA - Several servers usually with players on daytime, a bunch packed in the evening.

Duel - I see 12 populated serves right now, I don't duel so never looked before tbh.

CA - 26 servers with people on atm, though not a lot on the bottom 2/3rds, it's 12:45 though, things always were a fair bit quieter by now.

No FreezeTag ?

Haven't been looking into it but I've been invited into FT games 3 times over the past 2 weeks that were packed out for 4/5 maps, normally involving the .eu clan CHILL guys.

Honestly - I dont think Quake is near to death!

Especially in Europe there are tons of servers and plenty of players around. CA and Duel is always playable and even instagib servers are back up and never empty.

all the statstics form Steam can be shown as a "declining" but it doesnt feel that way.

This is just the perfect Game overall - and I dont see any chance that that we'll have to live without it.

Steamcharts don't show a decline. They show stagnation for the last 3 months

'Stagnation' .... sure put a very negative sounding term on it when it's still 200-300 players more daily than it was for 12+ months before the steam exclusive.

I dont know the stats before steam release. I only know that daily peak is steady 1100-1200 for the last 3 months. At least its not shrinking

And its a retarded analogy. In football/basketball you spend a big part of your time working on your endurance and strength, whereas these kind of factors play a much smaller role in Quake.

Competitive Quake = finished.
