Your community is much better than any other gaming community

Our community is rife with all kinds of good people - programmers, health enthusiasts, all around friendly peeps who have a lot going in their lives and literally know how to take a joke. So there's a few rotten apples, but it's nothing compared to any other gaming scene. Think about that for awhile. Would you honestly rather listen to console kids scream on their mics, who have zero incentive to create anything besides a few tears? Wouldn't you rather hang out with the veterans who saw it all from the beginning of internet gaming, who all learned how to hook up networks with their eyes closed, who learned to code for enjoyment simply because the computer games of the time offered them the ability to create their own world without getting sued - some of which who profited insurmountably, defining today's modern games. Carmack knew the value of open source material and once said "Knowledge is built on knowledge".

So yeah, I'd say our community has something most others do not. Even when most other games die, ours remains. Have you no pride to be involved? Even if you weren't around at the launch of Wolfenstein 3d, or Doom, or even original quake, you should at least recognize the difference between people who are merely looking for entertainment, and people who can handle their entertainment.

Name any other game with this kind of community, Bubba.

QL community is okay, but there are four main problems with projects:

1. If you follow Bitcoin and the Bitcoin community, QL is a lot like the Bitcoin community in that it is full of "ideas guys" yet there is literally less than maybe 12 people in the whole community who can AND do write the actual code to implement the ideas. The concept is "yeah we will get stats and a ranking system....just as long as someone else builds it." I have seen this thinking about 1000 times in the past week since QL went to Steam.

2. There is probably not a lot of motivation for the technical guys to build new stuff for Quake Live. This would have been different if it was 4 years ago, but the interest in the game has waned since that time.

3. The guys who make tools are good and generally release them in an open-source fashion and welcome contribution, which is great. However, the guys working on larger things like stats/rankings do so in the context of their own sub-communities. I am talking about the guys in places like #ctfpickup and #tdmpickup who will unquestionably eventually have ranking systems but will not contribute the code or ranking algorithms back to the community. They would prefer to be heroes of their own tiny communities instead of giving back to the larger community. When was the last time that either of those places open-sourced anything? The same was true with QLRanks, though they did have an API but only now do they plan on releasing any source now that their service is useless.

4. In the rare chance that big QL community projects do get open-sourced, there is no coordination, for example on github. It is just a bunch of lone wolves doing the code. This is far different from TF2 and DotA2 where there are organized, coordinated efforts on github to code and track issues for community projects. Take a look at TF2Stadium or dotabuff on github. Excellent example of how a project should be run.

Just a thought;

Someone like you with good ideas could actually start a project. There is still ways to help out and organize stuff even if you dont have any programming skills.

If the idea and motivation is good, people will probably come.

We already have a base that Sponge gave us for statistical stuff, you could probably start a discussion about in what ways we could go from there.

Who is interested in helping out? Who can do what? What existing code can we use? Can we get any help from QLranks? What do we need? And so on..

Who haven't got faith in QL, can you answer me? Because you use a broad brush here, asking "community" as a whole to have faith in this game.

News flash for you:
The ones who didnt have faith in QL already left. It's not like this game is one and only.
And us who still play it certainly have "faith" in it in that we still consider it to be a good game.

Last thing we need is elitism and BS that permeated late standalone QL.
All we need is for devs to leave this game alone and stop meddling with its settings/balance, and friendly and good-natured people to stream in and play some fun matches.
Rest can gladly be skipped IMO.
