I'm amazed at the amount of heretics suggesting anyone outside The Cooller.

It's not even close. Cooller is the definition of coolness, at least in quake. In everything he said, looked or did. Even his playstyle is/was cool.

Outside him, Fatal1ty gets a special mention, he was cool and a reference point in his prime.

How was his play style cool? If by cool you mean robotic sure.

Not robotic at all, in fact it was and is very fluid and natural. Robotic was his twitchy crosshair movement, not his overall movement. And it was so due to massive amounts of acceleration and probably sens or acceleration caps.

Watching Cooller effortlessy floating around a map was pure pleasure. So composed, fast, elusive.

Some times he even dodged enemy fire without even firing back, just shifting laterally and then running away watching the baffled enemy waiting for the railgun to reload. Before him, that was unthinkable in an official competition.

Other times he played dm6 without using rail or firing 4 or 5 slugs top. And still winning.

He pushed dodging and avoiding getting hit to new levels. Nobody focused on that aspect as much as he did, and he still is the master of that fighting style, only Rapha does it on comparable levels, and guess who inspired him?

Cooller also pushed the item and map control aspects, in fact he's the developer of the infamous "pac man style".

He made popular the "no item to use" croak sound. I'm not sure, but i think he also made popular the moving or standing crouching.

His stylized and particular smile emoticon is the most famous one, and legendary now. Beside he often used it in an ironic way, or when facing adversities.

When someone mentions the Doomguy player model, everybody thinks of Cooller.

The list could continue. Cooller influenced the professional quake scene more than anyone else ever did. It's not even close. Fatal1ty was more popular to the masses in his prime, but he was just more known. Then came Cooller, his stubborn but relaed character, his epic interviews and all the rest.

What effect have they had on the gameplay, especially the second one? Not being sarcastic, just genuinely curious.

For me "pacmanpl" style means 1200 ELO.

The pacman style is when you manage to get the almost totality of the items on the map, and focusing your playstyle on that instead of going around the enemy and deal damage. Other good practicers of that style are Agent and Rapha.

When you use a item, a "clic" sound is played if you don't have items to use, and the "no item to use" writing appears on screen. In ql it is possible to remove that write, in q3 it wasn't. If you bind the use item command to the mouse wheel, scrolling it makes a clicclicclic sound progression, that is hearable by the enemy too. If i remeber correctly, Cooler was the first or one of the first to do so in important matches, making it popular.

i remember when i started watching quake and i couldn't get why were so many people so obsessed with cooller. A lot of other guys aimed better and were way more flashy.. His style looked repetitive in the games i saw and i tought he wasn't a real contender with the cyphers and raphas.

Then a dm13 happens, he gets control, runs the map forever always keeping his opponent low, didn't give anything to the opponent... And died in after 8 minutes of control and basically no frags. He spawned, dodged everything, hit 3 insane directs, got the frag and then rekt him in overtime. The tension and the clutches were amazing.
The same fuckin happens the very next map. Didn't capitalize, throws away control, gets in an impossible situation, dodges everything and hits 3 insane rockets to win it when less then a minute is on the clock. LOL.
I've been a cooller fan since.

Op is asking about cool players, not the strongest, not the highest earners, and not the favourite ones.

That said, how can you call Tox? Tox is like the most socially awkward person between all the quake pros, which is saying something.

He looks constantly depressed and/or embarrassed. He may be a joy to watch playing, but cool? Nah.

Being cool is not about having the newest iphone, wearing the coolest clothes and sunglasses or saying the most cocky thing into a microphone. Being cool is about stopping to play in the arguably biggest game in quake history just to type "it's quiet in the studio".

Tox is not just cool, that guy is cold as ice.
