remember, cs sold 25+million copies for the first 3 three games(source, zero, 1.0) and the first game was heavily pirated as well.
people didn't have many choices for fps games back then.
there was no xbox live either
cs was basically lol and cod rolled into one back then

csgo hits 250k right now, btw.

number of copies is not the same as amount of players in game. ;p

imo csgo is bigger now than 1.6

maybe as an esport(this is probably debatably as well)
but i really doubt it has more players than cs had in 2001/2002

coming from someone whos played cs since early beta 1.6 definitely has a lot more players at one point than any other fps game around. csgo does have more funding for tournaments and sponsors etc but there isnt nearly as many people playing the actual game nowadays, back in 1.6's glory it was really the only good go to fps game around for both casual and competitive play (except for quake ofcourse) but now a days theres just soo many games to play that a lot of people dont even know what cs is and they play games like tf2 or cod etc

You had to go out of your way to get a copy of CS back then, and there wasn't really any competition for the consumer's money.

I don't remember Q3 ever having more than 10k active players at any time. I do however remember cs peaking at 120k.

You also have to remember that q3 had a lot of servers with bots on them.. those still showed up as number of players on player stats.

Yeah I joined some duel server and there was only one other player. I think they pay Steam to show big numbers.

i saw. i filtered "all populated" then i went through each region. lots of servers. NA, South America, and specially Europe. Oceania and Asia were pretty empty though. i think Oceania was at early morning so idk

the steam release is a huge opportunity to increase the player numbers. plz, don't waste it by tierslumming and statspadding. the high skill players should stay away from the currently noob-infested servers or try to help the newbies.
