too scary for me

I've been playing it.
I saved it a nighttime play through, lights off and headphones on. 15 minutes later, the lights were on, the headphones were on the floor and I'm pretty sure I woke all my neighbours up as well.

Played some more and it's not quite as scary as it was but still pretty damn spooky. I love how the night vision looks as well.

It's not scary but really nasty, some stuff wasn't necessary (necrophilia, mass graves). The nightvision is really cool though.

I've been playing some of it too, that's my kind of games.

I really like the whole architecture in some places and the gloomy atmosphere. The AI can act dumb at times, though.

Short version:

Personal preference.


Long version:

Outlast succeeds in the preassure and terror it puts unto the player, but since the gameplay is more focused on running than hiding (compared to Amnesia) and situations demand a quick reaction, the developer-intended way to deal with the situations are intuitively clear most of the times. Also, the levels are more linear, need less searching through them and you pretty much never stay long at one area. Thus, the gameplay feels a bit rushed and gimmicky at times, I almost dare to say the word 'predictable'.

Amnesia's strength lies in the exotic location and its theme of insanity+darkness. It makes you afraid of the dark. In Outlast, hiding in dark corners often means being sort of in a safe zone, while in Amnesia that is no safe option. You have to take your time exploring the world, since it is less linear and features more puzzles. That collides with limited oil/sanity and therefore creates anxiety even with no enemy around. Encountering one makes for pretty intense situations. I personally like this kind of horror more. But many people react heavier to the 'in-your-face' chasing like featured in Outlast. In Amnesia, you can outrun the enemy. In Outlast, you gotta go through an obsticle where the enemy does not follow (ceiling, pipe, etc.), or he will hunt you down eventually.

Outlast at times gives you no time to breath and executes its horror by chasing you relentlessly, while in Amnesia you are usually scared from not being found... yet.

As I said, it is pretty much personal preference what gets you more. It might just be the location. A modern-day asylum might feel way more realistic and therefore has more psychologial power to a person compared to a 19th century Prussian castle that has little link to modern-day experiences. It could be the graphical design/composition. Outlast goes for a more down-to-earth realistic look whilst Amnesia looks and feels sort of dream-like at times.

However, both games are good. Some people might have a definite favourite (To me it is Anmesia since I get hung up on the negative things I wrote on Outlast above), but both deliver the scares if you let yourself get sucked into it.

You seem to describe The dark descent, Have you tried a machine for pigs yet?

Hah I remember in dark descent I sometimes felt even relieved when the monster found and killed me as the suspense was too much to handle at some points.

Definitely Outlast, I was really disappointed with the new Amnesia. There are hardly any interactivities, only a few puzzles, your lamp has unlimited amount of oil and pigs chasing you aren't really scary (imo).

So if you want a good horror game go with Outlast, if you want a 'good' (preference) story get the new Amnesia.

Well jokes aside I think I am actually leaning towards Amnesia right now as it seems to have lower spec requirements and should be running on Intel HD graphics...

Hm, I've watched some gameplay on youtube and thought it didn't look that great. but I guess you have to play it yourself, so I'll still give it a try.
I also didn't like Amnesia that much personally. the atmosphere was nice and creepy for the most part with some good scares, but the gameplay and story bored me too much to continue about halfway in. I thought Penumbra Black Plague was much better. different setting but also pretty scary, way more variety with some Portal-esque puzzles and the story actually intrigued me enough to play through the whole thing.
I really miss that with most horror games nowadays, it's so nice when you can hardly stop playing a game because you want to see how the story unfolds. I loved Silent Hill 2 for example, despite the clunky controls. I wish there were more games nowadays that told stories like that and provided some psychological horror instead of more jumpscares
