take it a step further -- have someone play on the normal version against someone on the mirrored version. each movement and angle is converted to the other's perspective. I'm sure if we ask id nicely they'll implement this

Nexuiz has similar powerups that hinder opponents vision I think.

It's also a pretty terrible game.

It's a neat idea, but mirroring a map isn't as easy as implementing a few lines of code to reverse the geometry. Mirroring a map requires, from the ground up, a full re-compile of the map after performing an X or Y flip. id tech 3 is an engine that's over a decade old and the .bsp format has several limitations, and one of those is that it's not a "dynamic" format so to say. Changing geometry, texturing, and any non-entity element with the press of a button is not possible as it's "baked" into the .bsp. In fact, even newer game engines probably need re-compiling of their map formats to do something as simple as a mirror. Because a new .bsp would be required, making a mirrored version of every map would be impractical for time and bandwidth reasons.

If gmax supports maxscript this would be as easy as pie. All you'd be doing would be multiplying by the inverse world matrix or something. Had I thought of this while I was still making quake levels I may have come up with some cool q3 level design scripts. Then again I didn't know any scripting languages 5 years ago.

I wonder if it could be done in the quake engine after parsing the .bsp. ID is notorious for implementing useless features, so I'm pretty positive they will introduce an "inverse" option in start-a-match 2.0!

Seriously though, when I have time I will try to implement a script to invert Q3 .map files. Or find if there is such a feature or plugin available in some of the map editors. The problem after that is to find .map files for some popular QL/Q3 maps. Maybe just have to ask the map author to do the actual conversion+compilation.

Shouldn't require a recompile at all. Just mirror the geometry vertices, as you already mentioned, but also mirror the bsp split planes. Since everything else just references planes and vertices by some offset + length, this should be enough for mirroring a whole map.

Been a while though since I've written Quake renderers, might be forgetting something.

They did a cup of mirrored maps in TF2 with the most played ones, it was a mind fuck, your head is so used to the layout and places you will be trying to exit on doors that dont exist.
