- Luffy & Alioune haven't proved themselves overseas yet, but they have a good record against the top Japanese that travelled to French events and you can never count them out

yes, but prizes vary by attendance (money from registration fees), sponsorships and dev support. last year Street Fighter had a $25k prize pool, MK9 had 23k, Marvel had 15k etc.
i didn't find any info about this year though. it's not about the money anyway, Japan has the best players and their local tournaments are notoriously underprized.

I spent quite a bit of time playing and learning SSF4:AE cause I had also played quite a lot of 3rd strike. As soon as you're familiar with the game and understand all the things at play it's awesome. To be honest the big tournaments in this game are EXTREMELY entertaining to me, I'm often glued to the screen.

Not really, it just shows how broken the game is where imbalances in the game design can win over actual skill for similar skilled opponents.

If they can't balance their games after 25 years, they never will.

Instead they keep releasing new characters which introduce the problem further and try to mask it with blind selects for online play.

it wasn't really a walkover, that game could have ended either way. all of the final brackets could have, pretty much. how could they balance so much characters in order to make everyone have equal chances vs everyone? it's not possible. otherwise some pro's would just play 1 character for 20 years without the need to learn anything besides...

There are PLENTY of balanced characters and matchups in SSF4.
If there are any unbalanced ones then the design is flawed, NOTHING MORE. To somehow imply its theoretically impossible to design a balanced fighthing game is hilarious. Capcom have clearly made TONS of design errors, as is pointed out by them addressing things the community has pointed out. I have worked with game devs before on a fighthing game, a lot of them can't even play the game to within a frction of its potential, so how can they be expected to design one that's universally balanced, you can only do that if your designers are experts, of which most are not. So while its hard to design a balanced fighter, saying its theoretically impossible is lulz.

Infiltration ONLY picked Hakan because PR Rogs boxer was too strong for his main two chracters who are Ryu/Akuma. Why do you need his word for anything, Aquashark tried to imply the game is balanced by giving an example which only showed half the data. SSF4AE 2012 has 39 characters, yet his example mentioned the top 21, that shows nothing, given there is still nearly half the data missing.

Laughing? PR Rog had beaten Infiltrations Akuma, which is a god tier character played by the most successful SSf4 player in the last year, who is ranked best in the world. Seth K ex dev of the game said if Hakan was constantly oiled up HE WOULD BE THE BEST IN THE GAME. So there is a fine line, when hakan is oiled he can be dangrous as he proved.

I never actually said Hakan was overpowered. I simply used the opportunity to say that the game is unbalanced. That Infiltration just beat the best boxer in the world with a character he he plays a fraction of the time. We already know the game is universally unbalanced, we already know certain characters have little or no chance of beating others over 10 games regardless of player skill. If you don't believe me, get Vangief to play Pongkoo in a set of 10 and see what happens.

2.- In quakes there is a similar mechanic to counterpicking, which consists on using each weapon's strength on each situation. Hitting 90% lg to someone airborne using rockets doesn't mean the rocket launcher is UP (a good player will tell you it actually is the best weapon on the game) and the LG loses to most weapons in close quarters, so players have to choose which weapon to use on each situation.

The same happens in fighting games: can't win against all characters (weapons) if you only use one character (one weapon), so players should be able to play more than one. If he wants to become the champion then PR Balrog shouldn't be handicapping himself by using only Balrog and strenx simply cannot use LG all the time (which he used to do).

That is good balancing, not a flaw.


3.- A good measure for balancing the game and making people play different characters is precisely to make them have counterpicks. This means not only the characters have particular traits, such as gief's grabs, but also are weak to characters that their particular trait counters them, such as Akuma.

The reasons why Hakan is considered to be one of the worst characters of the game by everyone, even though Jamerio thinks he is OP (#141), are that he gets countered by the top picks, has bad match ups with most of the roster and overall is a risky pick (rewarded when it works, if it doesn't work then it's an humillating defeat). A character that exemplifies the first point is Makoto, which overall is a better character than Hakan but it truly suffers against what happen to be the current top picks with the 2012 patch.


4.- And again, you are really overestimating the Hakan against Balrog match up if the Balrog player is used to playing against that very much underplayed character.

Its not similar AT ALL, because in quake everyone has the EXACT same opportunities. Its down to them whether they utilise them.
Its like both players picking ryu, if you lose, you lost for no other reason than being a weaker player than your opponent. There was no matchup to blame, no bad design in matchups to blame, its 100% your fault.

In Street FIghter, those opportunities are defined by who you pick, and from there, if there is a conflict in styles then you simply won't win that game based on little more than a bad matchup unless you get lucky or your opponent plays a bad game.

Quake is essentially Ryu Vs Ryu.

And it's up to players to pick a different character. Everyone has the exact same opportunities for that.

Street Fighter is a game that has lots of characters: the game is not called Balrog v. the rest.
Quake is the same too, since it is not LG against rockets and choosing to go LG-only is a handicap in certain situations, which good players avoid.

Are you really, really sure you designed videogames? What I'm writing here is the opinion of literally everyone on the industry, the 101 on manuals and how videogames and sports are made, fine-tuned and played (have you ever heard the term clash of styles?) since....ever really.

Online play uses blind selects so, its a lottery.
You don't know who the opponent has picked, so if there is an unbalanced matchup, its basically down to luck who you both picked.

That is EXACTLY why capcom coded in blind selects, they did it to randomise the situation they were unable to fix with talent.

The problem with it is, after a while, players remember who uses who, and whose good with who, so regardless of the blind selects, players will still counter pick based on opponent knowledge.

And you're back to square one again.

I already know every possible avenue you can go with this and already have the answer. You just don't think I do :)

Like I keep saying, the only solution is to fix the game, that way, counter picking will be entirely useless because everyone will have a near equal chance of winning.

As I said its not impossible because there ARE ALREADY many matchups which are perfectly acceptable in terms of matchup WITH DIFFERENT CHARACTERS.
The problem Capcom have is they keep adding new characters instead of actually thinking about the existing problems.
If they can do it for some, they can do it for all with enough work.

Agressive returns are the counter to serve&volley play.

Tennis IS NOT flawed because both players have pretty much the exact same opportunities, whether you execute them or not is down to you.

in Street Figther, you are almost physically prevented from being able to effectively counter certain scenatios depending on nothing more than who you pick.

So using your tennis example, it would be like one person being unable to do a drop shot while the other can.

The way the game would TRY to 'balance' that is the guy that CAN do the drop shot will maybe have a tiny bit less speed so the guy without the dropshot would have to try and exploit that, but the chances are, the impact of an opponent being unable to do a dropshot is easier to exploit than a bit more faster run speed. Or reverse it if you think its the opposite. The point is, the things the game try to do to balance things out are not always sufficient. So when you have two high level players, what determines the winner? The game design. Not the talent.

So both players will try to exploit their characters weakness, but one weakness will be naturally superior to the other before they even begin play.

And this is the problem with street fighter, the skill and talent should be in winning fair and square, not simply picking someone you know the game has discriminated towards.

PR Balrog had 2 set points, both with considerable life leads. he went in taking very big risks or doing telegraphed moves when he should have sit on the lead.
