These days I much rather watch a a few episodes of a good TV series than a movie. I treat a season of a show as one big movie that's conveniently chopped into pieces for me. However I'm running out of ideas as to what to watch so I could use some suggestions.

Some of what I've watched and liked so far, in no particular order:

Dexter
Breaking Bad
Misfits
Homeland
The Walking Dead
Star Trek (TNG, DS9 and Voyager)
Stargate
Firefly

Good comedy shows are also appreciated:

Seinfeld
Frasier
Friends
3rd Rock from the Sun

It doesn't have to be a recent show. In fact, I prefer slightly older ones since I don't like having to wait a week to watch the next episode.

I watch Mad men with my Gf, and she forces me to watch Gossip girl. Mad men is the best shit evar, and Gossip girl brainwashes you after 2 eps, the intrigue is quite fun.

Well I've seen a few bits and pieces of most of them, and they didn't really amuse me. I like a few British comedy shows though, like Little Britain or That Mitchell and Webb Look.

Big Bang Theory only first 1.5 seasons maybe, then it quickly becomes just another boring relationship sitcom with humor dumbed down to please typical intellectually challenged TV show audience.
Also, beware: the actor who plays main nerd is homosexual.

This. 7 seasons, and a closed ending. Perfect choice if you are looking for a badass cop drama. Along with The Wire it's the best out there.

Suits is really good. Started to watch it like a week ago. First season is awesome, start of second is a bit dull but gets better after a few eps. Kinda like how the series builds the characers on all the prejudices I have against hot shot lawyers in USA :)

Funny I can live with. What makes me cringe is people go on about how it's the best comedy series that ever came out while the show has... a laugh track, or whatever you call it. Maybe in its day it was the funniest but in its day Charlie Chaplin was also the funniest. But I'm not going to pretend that watching a black and white mute person kicking bent over people in the bum is still comedy gold.

tl;dr: always sunny, the league and arrested development have screwed me up for shows with laugh tracks

Yeah I agree, its definitely not the best comedy series ever. Also I never really found Jerry Seinfeld to be funny, only Kramer and George. I don't think it has a laugh track as such btw, pretty sure its filmed in front of an audience, like fresh prince of bel-air. I guess you could call it a laugh track, but I don't mind it when its genuine, what I don't like is canned laughter (fake laughter). I think some shows are good with one, and others really don't suit it... eg red dwarf is rubbish without a laugh track imo, whereas curb your enthusiasm would be terrible with one.

I think the problem for me is it makes pretty much all the jokes follow a rhythm which needs that pause at the end for the audience. This makes the humor both predictable and thin-spread(which considering the former I don't know if it's a bad thing). This is fine for most shows but not for the best (imo atleast) in our day.

Well, you can refer to my second post ITT, that's basically all my favourite comedy shows (The Office is awkward as fuck but also has a ton of seasons, Trailer Park Boys is a different brand of comedy, more slapstick'ish and crude, less awkward but still hilarious, lots of season too however, Arrested Development is just gold and it's like 3 seasons IIRC, The League i've seen the first three seasons and i like it very much, a lot of improv in it, and then there's Parks and Recreation which is basically a less awkward and less funny/cringeworthy The Office, still a good series though).

If you can deal with sketches / short routine / improv comedy i HUGELY recommend watching Human Giant.

Other than that, 30 Rock (7 seasons though) and animated gems, Archer, Frisky Dingo, The Life and Times of Tim, Sealab 2021 and Harvey Birdman.

Yeah, David Cross basically plays the same character in both of those series. :p

If you liked him he also has a few stand-up specials, he's a good comedian.

Eh, i disagree, although i can understand why you'd say that, some of the effects are really crude by nowadays standards. To me, though, that only adds even more charm to the show. Add to that the forever fresh acting, dialogues, plot and characters... i still maintain it's one of the best TV series ever created.

I hope there's some truth in that rumor, i'd love to see how that would pan out. :3

Me and my girlfriend watched it a few months ago, enjoyed it very much. It wasn't so dated as that it felt like a "period piece". It felt like the 80's in assfuck nowhere.

I think it's the best HBO Series ever made, it's a prison drama, but nothing like you seen before. Nothing like Prison Break. It's actually shocking and intellectual at the same time. Although the last 2-3 seasons went a bit flat, they were still enjoyable.

But basically you can pick any HBO Show if you want quality entertainment.

There is a very good HBO comedy as well:
Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Frasier and Trailer Park Boys are completely diffrent sort of humor. Not dutch humor at all. Perhaps New Kids Turbo is dutch humor, but that's nothing like the TV shows I mentioned either.

And you think Seinfeld is all subtle, elaborate and clever? The irony is that they're both pretty much the same - some friends in NYC, predictable jokes and shitty laugh track. And the people who watched those series as kids overrate them as adults, even though they may have been the best that time had to offer. The only difference to me is the characters in Friends are nowhere near as annoying as Seinfeld's and there is none of Jerry's standup "comedy".

quite the opposite, seinfeld doesn't try to be overly clever in the writing, where friends is try hard, but falls flat imo, but everyone to his own opinion, especially if you don't like seinfeld, there's no point in me trying to explain WHY they are nothing alike despite the NYC fact.

If you don't mind getting dvds (or if you can find downloads to them) check out "In Living Color" and "The State" for comedies. That was back when Jim Carey (and the Wayons bros) were actually funny. The State was a show on MTV back in the early 90's, good stuff, and it's some of the same people that are in Reno 911.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I've tried Arrested Development and Parks & Rec once before and couldn't really get into them. Just not my kind of humor.

Tried Fringe before too, but didn't like it. As someone else said, it's trying too hard to be sci-fi, and it all just feels very forced.

Also tried The Wire before and couldn't get into it then. But I'm giving it another shot at the moment (just finished s01e03), and it's not as bad as I remember. I'm watching it with English subtitles this time and it makes the street slang a lot more understandable.

Thanks again, and more suggestions are always welcome.

I tried anime multiple times but I could never get into it. The stories always develop so slowly and they're filled with japanese cultural references that I either don't get or just am not very interested in.

I might be willing to give it another shot though... If you could name ONE anime that I as a noob should try, which one would be it?

I pretty much feel the same, I got into it because a lot of my friends recommended it :) Its usually worth it though, even though a lot of series can take a few eps to get going, usually they are extremely addictive when they do. They require sort of a down payment of your attention :)

I would recommend Berserk, its story moves fast and its interesting, theres enough character development, and tons of action. Hellsing is also good, the ending is a bit meh, but its worth a watch and is pretty short. Its set in britain, so its kind of westernised, and its about vampires (I don't normally like vampire stuff, but its done well) :)

(less japanese influence, easier to watch, somewhat fast plot progression / or non boring!)

Cowboy bebop (cool characters, only avoid if you really hate jazz / blues music :D)
Trigun (just fun, over the top somewhat, humor is good and also the sudden mood swing it takes near the end)

One Piece is one of the few animes that I prefer watching over reading the manga.
Overall the best anime I have ever followed.

My second favorite is hajime no ippo, which is probably better suited for you since it isnt as long.
And its about boxing, good fun.

- 24 season 1 to 4;
- Lost.

Then came QuakeLive in my life.
Long time no series...
Then I got banned. (I think now for having too many accounts. Stupid, I know, but I didn't know about any maximum.)

So, series watched lately:
- Game of Thrones season 1 - very good.
- Fringe S1 to 3, very good too, but you gotta be a little open minded for this one.
- The walking dead S1+2 - very good.

Tonight I'll finish 24 season 5.
Tomorrow imma start with season 6. S7 is already on the shell waiting.
To me 24 is really addictive, like "Ow eh, it's already 3 in the morning... well allright, one more then".

And I have bought Hell on Wheels too, but haven't come to watch it yet.
And imma buy Homeland too.

Ow, almost forgot the Simpsons.

maybe something really remarkable about the series, it is the only comedy series based on grief. also the only series having a blind character on a permanent basis. the way they handle those tough topics in a humourous manner is quite special.

its very easy amusement and nothing special at all. It`s the kind of series you turn on before you go to sleep or your let it run while doing something. it's not bad overall though.

Also i like "community" kinda the same slap stick easy going shit. everything else got mentioned already.

Through the Wormhole is an amazing show if you want to learn more about the universe and it's inner workings. Louie is a great dark/different comedy. Not what you'd expect. Departures is a show about two younger canadian guys traveling the world, but doing it in a very different style, not the typical "travel channel show" bullshit. Trailer Park Boys is one of the funniest shows I've ever seen, and probably the funniest thing to come out of Canada. Scam City shows you how people scam you in different regions, I found it randomly and really enjoyed it.

Just a few that came to mind that I've been watching recently.
