Is that because it's more time consuming for DE? I thought normally Dreamhack had some team modes for Quake aswell which if maybe we wouldn't now would give more time?(I actually prefer teammodes over duel but Quake needs the promotion.)

Not sure really. I made a schedule for DE and it fits quite nicely.

Normally we only run duel tournaments with some exceptions.

Adds more tension to it and it's easier for spectators to understand. So for viewers = better, players not of course.

I would agree that tox is messed up with the current spawn system.

However, a change in the spawn system or moving the spawn points around would change the map dynamics greatly. I don't think its a complete lost cause and do agree to win on tox shouldn't be determined by who is the best at spawn-raping.

Even in its current state, Noctis still manged to play it differently from everyone else and do very well on it :)

As for dm6; for every incredibly close, tense and brilliant game (cooller-strenx IEM etc) there has been at the pro level, there are two or three blowout games that are in no way good to watch (Fox-Stermy and Fox-Strenx come to mind). Also, after the spawn system change a few updates ago, the possibility for one player to get both red and mega uncontested and as such dominate the game has tripled. Here are some of the initial spawn-pairs that currently happen:

Player B: Closest LG spawn

The list goes depressingly on.

As such, the possibility for these brilliant games to occur is now even more remote. To have a brilliant game every one in three, sure I would agree we could have it in the pool; one in every six to ten (what currently happens) I would rather not.

Finally, (and the most depressing fact of it all) is if QL had the initial spawns set to "spawn pairs" (where each pair was deemed relatively balanced by the community); we could have so many more brilliant games on that map and it would then be a viable option to have in the QL duel mappool.

With just a little tweaking both maps could be much better to play. boo :(

I was fucking around with a system like that a few months ago that works with a base spawn and an opposed pair. Spawning at point A would mean that the other player has spawned at either point B or C. The other guy spawning at point B would know you've spawned at point A or D / spawning at point C = E or A.

Adroits would most likely have had more teams (and more players in the 1v1 too) were it not for the ludicrous entry fee. High entry fee combined with the usual costs to attend an event, unspectacular prizes that took an age to announce (1 month prior to the event unless I missed something). I'm actually surprised they could scrape together 8 teams for it.

What reason did CTF teams have to sign up either? They were told nothing that would have motivated them to sign up. It was said that CTF would clash with the other tournaments, which would preclude any chance of participating in the TDM or Duel, plus there was no indication of what kind of prizes to expect. Knowing that there was going to be an entry fee and that you realistically need to organise travel and accomodation ahead of time, with so many details unconfirmed what chance was there for any significant interest?

I'm not even advocating team gametypes for Dreamhack, or any LAN, unless they're done right, which apart from DHS'11 they just aren't. I'd personally like to see a really good 1v1 tournament with a strong field of players and some good prizes. Hopefully that's still possible with the cancerous shitmania distracting some players away from QL.

My argument was never necessarily total numbers of signups but a combination of factors such as a closer competition, a default support base for every team, players of perhaps a slightly lower level wanting to represent their country etc

It would always take more organisation and I don't think it happened as I would have envisioned but 8 teams is pretty decent considering all the factors involved and I doubt there would be more teams if it was a clan based event.

Unfortunately, the effect is that there will be no representation from Poland and France, historically the top nations competing with Swedes and others, and also nations which make up for big chunk of stream viewers.

The idea is definitely good, just wasn't realized in optimal way :(

In a 'dream world' I prefer to change maps very often and I really dislike playing maps that are many years old no matter what map or how good that map was in the early days. When a map has been around like ztn, dm13 or even aerowalk it leaves very little room for mistakes and more importantly very hard for new players to get into dueling.

I also understand that we don't have enough maps currently to switch it up to often. But we are playing maps that I played in QW/Q2 -> aerowalk etc. This to me is a game that wants to self die...

Getting new maps accepted into any Quake community is just a bit to hard in general (not only QL) as people don't even give the maps a chance and instantly want to feel comfortable by playing the same old maps over and over again :(


Edit: I also realized that the only reason that I still enjoy to play Q2 duels from time to time is because we have around 20 maps in the duel map pool that are switched every season. Perhaps not new maps all the time, but at least they are changed every new edition of European Duel League.

that's how it worked in broodwar and it was a big part of it's success. players didnt have a say in what the map pool was, KESPA had a professional map making team with a dedicated testing team. its obvious to everyone that if the players get to decide, they'll just hang on to any map they feel like they have an advantage on

This would naturally be fantastic for Quake as well. I doubt that there is budget or plans like this from id software though :(

It's not a funny situation, it's embarrassing to see the game stagnate like that by top players quitting in the first minute because they can't respect a new map.

Blood Run, Lost World, Furious Heights, Aerowalk, hektik are all old maps that QL elite has been wanking for the part 2-3 years, adding silence to the map pool is great since it's a map that I consider easy to learn and both top players and underdogs have the same opportunity to practice it.

Quite illogical from u. U r a girl, right? If u change 1 map - it DOES take away the fun, because any decent pro just won't bother learning it, hoping he can skip it or forfeit. If u change ALL maps to new ones- there will be no options but to learn them as hard as u can, thus - true dedication to win from players ('cause evryone will try to show his best - evryone starts in the same condition) and LOTS of fun.

Like purri said, it's currently not possible to swap 5 old maps for 5 fresh ones, so a middle ground has to be set.

New maps bring in new competition and gives somekind of hope to "new" and upcoming players wich I find much more entertaining as a spectator and it forces players to stay active and practise instead of just playing the same old maps they know inside out.

New maps dont take that long to learn the basics and then they can evolve by time. Same goes for spectating new maps. First time its chaotic, but after a few games you can follow the game easily.

If you dont have time to practise, you should not expect to be top 4 :)

Baksteen had like 80 games vs someone who had 2 :O. Dunno how much more experience you'll need vs someone who hardly knew the map. Ofc he will beat him in the future if k1llsen doesn't practice it but that was never the point of my arguement. Baksteen (I'll use him as an example no offence intended) won't have bigger chances on silence than on any other map because the general flaws he still has compared to top10 guys won't suddenly vanish. Someone from the top 10 has only get used to the map (which won't take that many games) whereas baksteen has has to learn the map and work on his game at the same time which in the end will only prolong the learning process. Guess why so many of the up and coming players were crying about the adroit map pool?!

The maps aren't what keeps new players from catching up to the established pros. Skills translate from one map to others very fast. There have been a lot of new maps introduced in ql and rapha, cypher & co were the best on them again in matter of 20 games.

If I started to play duel and had to face a pro, lets say k1llsen, I'd much rather play him on a new map that none of us had much experience on than some old map he'd played for ages where I knew I wouldnt stand a chance. Not that my chances on the new map would be much better as he would have more dueling experience, but I'd still have a better chance to upset on the new map than the old one. Given what i just wrote, I would call that "more hope" and thats all im saying.

As I posted above, i never mentioned favouring beginners on new maps, only a slight better chance to do better than on old maps. It just seems youre determined on misunderstanding everything just for the sake of it.

not to forget that the addition of new maps for tdm made a massive boost in activity, competition etc. im pretty sure tdm would be dead already if we didnt get these maps

Latest 4v4 quick cup (no dm20 in the pool) was Dreadful-Purga-Limbus. I bet we'll see similar stats for current Clanbase competitions.

the community embracing these new maps was one of the key elements to reviving the tdm scene i think (well actually there was a bit of forcing involved :D). endless repeats of same old maps simply makes people bored and its unhealthy for the scene

Yeah I get the feeling that he doesn't care enough to make much of an effort (I think he said that himself), and although someone like 2GD can be worth watching even when he's doing it half-arsed, Fazz doesn't have the talent or charisma to pull that off. I don't mean that last part as an insult to Fazz -- people like 2gd are the exception to the rule, and even for him it doesn't always work.

I believe TDM is more of a challenge to commentate and for me its a much more interesting mode than duel.

Duel can be very exciting though and it is very clear most of the time what is going on so you don't need as much understanding, plus with games half the length its really easy going so it is fairly enjoyable.

I would do duel and have done before but I would want lots of practice to improve further, which with the current organisation of duel events just will not happen.

I'm confident that the schedule will work out. Especially for the group stage. 1h 30min for every match, where the active game time is 50 min tops. That's more than enough. As for the playoffs we can easily start the second game before the first one is finished if.

We are on an all time low and it's dhs, that ctf lan thing in netherlands, quakecon, adroits, dhs, possibly ugc; plus local lans (ukraine last week, that australia one in which we voted on fb to get them a laptop as a prize and the contest was rigged, etc.)

the serious tournaments are dreamhack and quakecon ( lol ) , and are 3 in a year, so 2 of them=66%

In e-sports there's no such a thing as a more important tournament than other, unless it is a "world final" with qualifiers and all that (not just the last stop or last of the year but a real grand final).

it is square sure that some tournaments are more important than others, even in e- "sports" (lol) : in fps, particularly, LAN tournaments are WAY more serious than the others; not to mention the prize pools, without of them most of the "pros" doesn't even show up, so...

Then there's the distinction between local events (lets say ukraine, argentina and australia) and international, in which there are lots of participants from other countries and a decent prize pool. We are talking about the second ones, as I made clear on the first post (which are 5 or 6 this year).

My point is there's not really a subcategory in international events unless it is a "grand final" lan (esl masters) or something that has been hyped to death and is different than a regular international lan.
Everyone attended that netherlands ctf lan so it is the same as winning a hypothetical ctf tournament at dh:s.Same with all the duel events that were played all these years, dh:s counts as much as esl dubai, with the exception of esl masters.

This is one of the biggest problems in "e-sports": there's not a world cup type of event, or different tiers/importance, which is why some developers are doing their own.

yeah, but talking about lans, and international ones, only 3 have remained, and just becuse dreamhack is two times in a year... well, watching at the last "quakecon", it could be said that there are 2.5 left :-/

Lower prizes and worse venue than others, but for quake those 3 still meet the criteria. "E-sports" events are not what they used to be, with the sole exception of rts and mobas.

afaik, that is not enough to define a race, a tournament, or any kind of competition, international; plus, if the best take part only in the 3 lan remained, (and is not even totally true: just think about how many top 10 didn't show up in the last dreamhack and quakecon), how can a tournament in which take part only "class b" players and some random top be defined a major event? Same goes for the online tourneys : Rapha didn't take part to Zoracs (r.i.p) mainly for the unplayable ping he had; so the best, or one of the best, cannot partecipate; and what about lans? Many players cannot even afford the costs of the travels to the lan location.

Those aren't "b class" players btw, and it isn't some sort of fatal1ty scheme inviting 1 player (stermy) to play a 1v1 dm17 match on the states so he could call it a world championship.

bah; say what you want, but a tournament with just one top 5 isn't really international, expecially when it's not on LAN, more if the prizepool doesn't even worth the travel

nontheless i think it would be better to start earlier, even i think all games will fit in this weekend. but i think its more professional to start on time and maybe have breaks inbetween games than delay all games or play them parallel. I d like to see all games in the playoffs.

it aint 50 min tops, you're not counting the overtimez. 2 campers and 10 OTs can fuck up the whole scheduel (sic!)

that's why we accounted 1,5h per game. I don't think we ever had more than maybe 2 overtimes. So it's not very likely anyway..

If I remember right 2GD said he offered the job to Joe and he was ready to take it, but then it somehow turned out there is no money right now to pay him so it didn't happen. That's not a decline, but more like an unfortunate turn of events.

it would obviously be a disaster to involve any other mode at this point. to have a succesful team LAN happen again it would mean announcing it ~6 months in advance, ie. announcing tdm or ctf at DHS 2013 now or quite soon

personally im hoping for the guys responsible (blaze etc <3 <3) to start working on getting TDM for DHS 2013 and announce it really early. DHS 2011 tdm LAN was a great experience and the months leading to it the pinnacle of qltdm, im just dissapointed about adroits since i cant go and it didnt provoke such a spur in activity as dhs 2011 did...

wasn't adroits announced ridiculously early (3-4 months)? look at the turnout for that. 8 teams. also, define successful, how many teams would an event need to make it successful? I recall people saying "announce an event 2-3 months early so bla bla bla can happen and ur event will have great turn out and the community has enough time" and now you've extended that to 6 months?

i'd say 14-16 is enough, similar to DHS 2011. 8 teams with the nations restriction is already quite good, i think it was the wrong call to make it nations tbh. basicly nothing besides "we're having a lan, details to follow" was announced for adroits, a lot of the details were kept very late (however that wasnt the reason why im not going, its because we couldnt get a finnish team together) and some of them turned to be quite bad, such as not getting 120hz monitors.

when an already established organization like dreamhack announces they are gonna have tdm at DHS or DHW 2013 or whatever, people know its going to be quality, they dont need to know any other details besides thats its going to happen so they can start preparing for it.

IMHO, your 3rd point need to be of similar level of importance for LAN as prize pool or players list. So sad that many organizers often miss this and leave caster choice for last minute, and usually pro player casting is spontaneous random occurrence rather than planned invintation.
It's good to make best conditions for 16 players, but it is better if you also think of best experience for several thousands of viewers as of equally important.

Being pro doesn't mean you'll be a good caster though.

You are correct, there needs to be a good dynamic between casters too, a caster with poor communication skills for example would never be good.
The two that I named (there are others, zsx etc) provide great insight when they do have the opportunity to commentate and generally know how to handle themselves on stream.
