anyway here is what I use. Bought a sennheiser 555hd in 2009 ($100 in a NY store), just for listening music. The phones were pretty good but this year I did the "foam removal mod", because all the 555 parts are shared with a more expensive model besides the addition of that foam in the 555, but didn't like the result at all. Then I did the "soundstage mod", which is cutting the inner grill so there's the complete effect of the foam mod, and it's beyond awesome. It sounds like studio headphones.

At first it is a quite decent phone for gaming. Thing is with the second mod I realized "gaming phones" have to have a superb soundstage. It literally is an auditory wallhack, which isn't used in its full potential in QL (awful in the sound departament. Worse than q3 and released more than 10 years after) but in the rest it truly is spectacular.

So, before buying google "(model) soundstage"


I use a desktop usb mic from logitech, that's somewhat expensive (google says $25 to $30) but it serves as a headphone stand so it never falls off the table. Sole reason why I bought it instead of something cheaper lol.

I would also recommend the sennheiser 380 if you have a noisy environment.

The 555hd is discontinued I think and are regular headphones (not usb).

Its good for gaming but suck for music, as there is pretty much only mid to high range in them and no bass.

No bass is disappointing at first, but then you realize how awesome it is for gaming, as cerb0z says.

I'm not sure why you'd say that. It has in fact very 'boomy' bass, which obviously sucks for quake but you just use the EQ to reduce bass, very simple and common method. I think it's just fine for music and overall use.

Also very very comfortable even after long hours.

I got it yesterday and it's not that there isn't any bass. Of course it's not that good as in a headset designed to listen music but it's also not so flat i thought. Anyway headset is awesome, I don't even feel it on my head and it's not sqeezing my ears :)

It's far, FAR from "boomy" as described above. When I listen to dubstep (not brostep), the speakers barely vibrate.

Worst headset ever in terms of microphone. I had the chance to use these last weekend. I had to setup 2 siberias and the microphone is the biggest shit I've ever had to finetune. The microphone picked up sound > 5 meters away from the caster.

It's also ugly as fuck.

Forget gaming headsets. Do yourself a favour and buy a decent pair of headphones, then additionally buy a clip-on microphone. Think about it.

I have that mic. Used it for 3 years now and I've rolled my chair wheels over its cable numerous times. Still works. Pretty decent quality as well. Just have to adjust boost to max.

As for boom mic I heard its better than nothing, not as clear as PC360's one but still fine.

They're a little too bassy for me. Had to lower it in X-Fi EQ. Other than that, the sound is awesome and the earpads keep away all outside noise. Comfort is fantastic, like two pillows over your ears =)

Are you considering the DT770 80OHM as a "fun all-around heaphones" (listening to music, movies etc) or more for gaming and pipointing stuff by hearing? what would be your choice from above?

80Ohm's will need more power from the sound card, some card's have OPamp's (changable output transistors) like the card i prefer Auzentech Bravura

of the 10+ headphones I have tried for music and games, I find the best positional advantage from open hp's. It seems like you can get the same soundstage/positional advantage from decent in-ear hp's (with additional over-ear closed ear-muffs as seen used by most duelers @ big tournies). I havent tried many iem's. but the ATH-CK10's I have are at least as good as my HD555's in FPS's, provided you can get a good fit. no amp required. they have been around a few years, I found a like-new pair for $140. these: http://tinyurl.com/bl25zlv . Etymotic triple flange tips work well, so do ear-plugs with the center cut out, custom ear molds would be freakin sweat.

I havent tried the former 2, but as I understand the qpads are basically rebranded beyerdynamic dt770's with a mic. My dt770's (250 ohm, amped) are fun to listen to bassy music and explosions, but for gaming u feel pretty boxed in and clueless most of the time as to where sounds are cumming from - not recommended.

On the other hand, I havent tried the qpad/ MMX 300, so I cant speak to differences - some reviews seem to hold them in higher regard - http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/beyerdynamic/MMX_300/4.html . Still seems pretty expensive though.

PC151 is very sturdy and while it's not audiophile grade stuff it still has a decent balanced sound. It should be cheap too. It also has a very nice microphone. If you want something affordable and reliable I can recommend it.

Regarding your serious note, you are partially correct that a large loss you will experience with cheap headphones is only in sound quality. But from experience a better headphone is noticeably better in two more key areas (that I can think of atm, pertaining to gaming):
1. soundstage, directional accuracy, 3D space. Good headphones manage their drivers in such a way that a very accurate experience of 3D sound can be achieved (with only two drivers, not that 5 speaker crap). In simple terms, you can hear exactly WHERE a sound clue is coming from, distance as well as height as well as direction.
2. separation of minute sound details. Better headphones will portray a wider range of frequencies faster and without overlap. In other words you can hear things which you never heard before, every sound stands out better. E.g. where with a cheap set of cans certain audio cues would merge and hide each other.

Makes more difference in newer games where they paid some attention to the sounds. Won't know till you experience it. Won't make you a pro instantly or anything like that, but when the skill difference is minuscule, this is the kind of stuff that gives you the edge.

More than having an edge, I think you should get better headphones to enjoy music and gaming much more.

To me it is as mind-blowing as buying a new graphics card while they won't get obsolete, which I find it's one of the advantages of having good peripherals and accessories (not everything is disposable).
