meh i say music video lightly. doesnt even have to do with the fact if they have one or not, just that it marks a degree of success which doesnt come by often without selling out. all this should be taken very lightly as im probably talking bullshit, dont know any history of those bands

i agree that some people are in it to make money, most often people just want to get payed for doing something they love. most people aren't even capable of doing anything that they don't actually like doing, in the creative arena, anyway. you can say beethoven sold out when he was 13, since he had to cater to exact preferences of the paying clients and you can say britney hasn't sold out, because she just loves making shitty pop songs and would do it for free.

you cannot compare that at all, since it is a historical issue. it is no accident that with the "invention" of a pop music industry (+electronic music without a visible instrumental source, +recordings)some figures like cage, xenakis, ligeti etc.. had to adapt their compositions. look up the current big composers and you'll find weird stuff of spectral music,, atonal madness, stochastic and electro-acoustic pieces.(grisey, radulescu, lachenmann, etcc.)

and it's always an issue between making music you love and designing(!) music. so look at the content. if you're studying composition, you'll have to adapt to some preferences or historical references without being in the need of pure design. if the audience wants you to improvise some pieces doesnt mean, that you're selling out or can't do it in a creative way.

Music = random combination of typical recipes for this style; compositionally they found nothing special, they could switch half the notes to different ones and song would still be perceived pretty much the same. Good song is one where elements are so carefully selected among all possible variations that even a little change to it would ruin it significantly. This is not it.
Words = random combination of "deep sounding" phrases that together make no sense and tell no story.
