I really hope this game doesn't disappoint. I have high expectations, but I'm not a doubter. If 2GD and crew manages to create the ultimate arena fps, all we need to do as a community is to get the word out there and let people know this is coming.

I hope not. Q3 is a bit outdated nowadays, if they want to make a game that is appealing to the masses they'll have to use something more modern.

d3 engine is crapper then q4 and has more bugs and glitches and piss poor netcode and nothing much of ammo and stats are synced

either way, you still have to pay £500 on hollywood FX sample cds, and layer samples together in fruity with reverb and other vst fx on to make all the audio, make ambient pads in absynth/cronox, find "actors" that match gameplay for all VO and pay them £100+ each

besides your own hobby time, a indy game cost £8000 to make

you can get proper cheap "actors" in your local university, 30 mins of their time they cannot say no to 6 hours in the pub

Some ideas to make this game more successful:

Include only 2 weapons (and don't actually model them, just pretend you're shooting stuff from your hand)
-A hitscan instantkill weapon
-A projectile weapon

Make the action as dull as possible by keeping 2 players in spectator mode until it's their turn to use the hitscan weapon, this will surely bring in thousands of viewers.

Make movement as simple and clumsy as possible, NO STRAFING, RAMP JUMPS, WALL JUMPS, anything, just a straight line + a key that adds speed.


This along with decent marketing and "real e-sport" gimmick should boost the activity in FPS genre.

Doesn't seem like you have played SM. There is strafing. Overall the game is so simple that i can play the game using nothing but my kana mouse;
M1 - Fire
M2 - "Action"
M3 - +forward
M4/5 - strafe
(and who needs +back in SM, lol).

i dont know why anyone have the impression shootmania is any successful... honestly last time i checked (a week ago or so) there was 900-something players in the afternoon (eu) and 2-300 at night (us afternoon). i dont know if its a counter for logged in people or actively playng, not like it would matter... the very first stream got 4500 viewers (not to mention i came across some less advertized shootmania stream trough the streambox here with constant 50-60(!!!) viewers) .
these numbers are equal what QL puts up if not worse. considering the hype and effort was made so far advertizing the game its nowhere near it should be...

I don't think you can fairly judge how successful a game is by the number of people logged into a closed beta.

that was me oversimplifying what his idea actually was for the sake of keeping my post brief. The 'and stuff' indicates there's more to the idea than voting.

He's talking about the community making the maps and then after so many paid-for downloads, the map becomes free for the more casual players who weren't going to pay for it anyway. As in, there will be some actual incentive (money-making potential) for map-makers to go crazy and make some seriously awesome, competitive maps for the community. It's a great idea, and yeah, those games you listed didn't do that.

think this will fail pretty hard, not gameplay wise, but gettin-more-than-just-quakers-to-play-it wise.

and we've already got ql for that matter... rather invest that money you got for developing own title to ql tournaments, and it's popularity will rocket up like never before. :D

edit: anyway, best of luck and hope it's idtech4, since it works well on old computers, looks fancy/modern enough for new kids, and is already gpl'd and can be modded/extended beyond all limits. would save money as well as time.

I hope you guys have a clear art/design direction. Having volunteers in the dev team can be a nightmare. Because they don't get paid, they insist on their stuff being implemented justified only by the fact that they've spent time on creating it.

quake live is already the perfect esports game why isn't he getting his investors to invest in sponsoring quake live tournaments? the community doesn't need a new game the community needs sponsors/money which 2gd seems to be rich with.

acualy, a new fresh game could kickstart the dying genre.

Being in major tournaments like WCG again would bring quake back just as easily, I couldn't even imagine the exposure quake would get if it was ever picked up by something like MLG. Quake is perfect ID are just the worst marketers in the world.

probably that's one of the reasons why 2gd wants to make a game: to not depend on a company that doesn't give a fuck. That and QL is pretty stagnant after essentially 13 years

i think the concept of this is awesome. to invest everything in the core construct of a game and in physics rather than in all that time consuming stuff that the community itself can do as good (if not better)

excluding player demands and forcing your ways upon the buyers just doesnt work anymore. game developers may be experts at coding games but they totally aint when it comes to actual gaming compared to the thousands of hardcore enthusiastic gamers out there. you may still work that way when your game has a phantastic story to tell but for esport games this only can fail.

Not really. Lots of multiplayer-only games are doing really well today, especially MOBAs.

SP would also probably cost a lot of extra money, and this game is all about esports which leaves SP completely useless.

Although I have you ignored for obvious reasons, I just want to remind people that jamalz is simply a faggot hacker that sucks at Quake Live and should never be taken seriously. He won't play Reborn unless he finds some hacks. Naturally, the game should be multiplayer only. Single player is just a waste of resources in a death match fps looking to appeal to both casual and competitive gamers. The end.

It could be a mode such as the one in Left 4 Dead. You have FPS like physics and bunch of AI enemies that you can blow up with friends. This causal like mode will bring tones of casuals that potentially can get interested in competitive mode in the future because they already know how game works like.

He just has to make sure that it's got nice graphics, something that's now very important to the esports community because graphics will mean more than just something pretty that's compelling for spectators to watch. It also means hardware sponsors like nvidia. They want a game that will show off their hardware's capabilities. So make the game play well, THEN make it look good.

He has a good opportunity here to tailor the actual game itself for the perfect esports experience which is what he wants.

For example:
He could integrate the game with twitch.tv, so he controls what you are seeing and there is a small window in the corner to show himself or brackets etc - but it is all through the game client itself like GTV. The game website can have a TV page with listings and streams etc

Maybe ppl ingame can receive global messages stating that a tournament is about to be streamed and allow the player to simply click a link ingame to get to the GTV/Stream of that game (Watch in-game or watch on twitch is asked?)

Have ingame options to allow ANY players to automatically stream & cast what they are doing. Have it all integrated.

I don't think it's a good idea to move away from the extremely successful livestreaming concept and back to something similar to GTV.

For me, MVD demos are good enough.

Those are just the ones off the top of my head. Being around this community for 10 years you'll learn that this type of thing is mostly just talk. I wish 2gd success, and I truly hope he does pull this off, but with the track record of "projects" like this, this probably won't happen.

How was Severity exactly connected to the ESR/Quake community? It was a game that the CPL brought up and that Romero (who did almost nothing for Quake) should have developed.

AGP Tour... Weren't that some Americans who started the whole thing? And we all know what most american eSports-attempts turn into (see CGS, Cyber X Games, CPL).

G7 Teams now that's completely off the road for me. How is the gathering of the 7 biggest eSports organisations tied to Quake or ESR? Those are companies who wanted to make eSports better for the actuall players/clans and not only a selling-ground for Sponsors.

1st what does the Community have to do with a project iniciated by the biggest eSport-League around that time? They didn't pay for it they didn't develop it. It was a game-developement studio that got money from the CPL and the task to develop a good 1on1 shooter for them. I don't see any simillarities to Reborn that is a project of 2GD who has done amazing things for Quake and untill now followed trough with every thing he did.

After listening to 2GD talk about Reborn on The GD Show #13, I'm pretty damn excited about it. Trust in fox, fazz, 2GD and this amazing anonymous super coder.

I trust 2gd, but fox who supposedly stopped playing becaus of "real life" and comes back to play shitmania? Also fazz was kind of promoting SM here on esr. I would talk with other type of players, like rapha and cooller.

Well, on the GD Show, I think they let it leak by accident that fox said he did it because he hadn't travelled in awhile and it was a free trip. Fazz, however, has been supportive of Shootmania, so I don't know.

I have no doubt 2GD would love to fly guys like Rapha and Cooller to his studio when the game is "testable." Right now though, they're really just figuring out the design that he has in his mind.

Who cares about player x? They are players, not designers. However, I am sure their resumes would make them ideal candidates for alpha/beta testing.

I'm going to get bashed to hell but I've watched the whole thing and Jay seemed really fucking insecure to me ( even before the q&a part ). I wish him all the best and I want him to prove me wrong about the few things that I don't think will work out but I felt uncomfy all along.

Really? I think that "insecurity" he displayed was more along the lines of wanting to tell us everything fucking awesome about Reborn but really had to try hard to bite his tongue.

But even if he was insecure, can you blame him? It's a big undertaking and I think all we can do is support him as best we can. If there is anyone out there that can give the community what we actually want and need, it'd be that collection of players. Not to mention his connections and rabid fanbase willing to volunteer their time and give up their money.

Whether he can get people to support him remains to be seen, but between all the other FPS like warsow, quakelive, and shootmania, cpm with a potentially huge player base from trackmania. It'll be hard.

You're better off working with idsoftware to make a special version of quakelive. QUAKELIVE PRO/PLATINUM? Or just knick the quake 3 engine, UE3 is better for tech (idtech 4 is bad), but I think the stuff like GTV etc in quake is all good to go. So probably better off taking the hit in graphics for functionality and appealing to existing quake modders/coders etc which I'm sure is the main influence for this.

BUT...

There is just no money at the moment and as we've seen with Shoot Mania, pros will play 'bad' games if there is a tourney and money and a chance to compete, so IMO, the thing that is lacking is the money and competitions. Not the game.

Ive heard some rumors about 2GD being unreliable regarding the developement of Reborn. I was actually shocked when I heard that since ive followed the guy for quite long time. Also he said that we would be able to see some content after 3-6 month since he announced the project... we are about to end january and there arent any news. I have faith in him and this game.
Does anyone know anything?
