You see, I either get destroyed by Thunderstruck Heroes, or 10-0 players who don't dodge. I'd like an intermediate challenge from which I can learn.

You're missing the point that you're not actually going to get very good by doing what you're doing.

eye to eye is probably the shittiest map for lg practice. its too open / easy and there's no real dodging involved in it. thunderstruck is actually a much better map for lg practice than eye to eye. if you're looking to better your lg technique, you should be playing there. if all you care about is your lg, then sad to say it wont get better by playing eye to eye 24/7. you need to be willing to switch up the circumstances and be ready for whatever approach that comes at u.

If you want to improve your game overall (and not just raw lg aim) you'll be better off playing ffa, or even pub tdm. You'll be forced to use all the weapons, to use improve your movement and even to use basic timing/strategy if you wanna win vs decent players. 1v1 ca is retarded, wont learn much there other than bad habits.

i see..

you cant improve your lg aim without learning the basics of how to dodge it properly. you need to listen to what asyy and everyone else is saying, and work on your movement first and foremost. there's guys with pretty good lg aim, but get destroyed easily because they fail @ basic dodging. play in some CA or pubs, and work on your overall game first. when that's at a decent level, then you can move towards more advanced lg vs lg bouts.

If he wants to prac lg and lg only 1vs1 is probably the best way to do it. It's pretty unforgiving and playing different (better) aimers/dodgers will improve his lg skills certainly better than random ca where most players are afraid to engage 1v1.

I have never done it because I find it boring but I still think it is the fastest way to improve one's flaws with a certain weapon. Tho I agree that it doesn't necessarily reflect a duel scene with obstacles, corners and vertical fights.

In best case he will improve his lg skills for 1v1 situations on a flat ground without obstacles, in worst case he will develop very bad habits like only focusing on his damage output instead of trying to minimize receiving damage.

Minimize receiving damage spoils the whole fun in quake...let's all gtfo and run if we're not stacked enough, instead of spreading rockets and shit on each other...raw action <3

Well I would like quake live duel to be a little more aim heavy, more raw action myself. But that's not what it is and I wont give advice based on something that exists only in my head.

I believe the better your abilities, the less concentration they require. Thus, the better your aim, the more you can focus on dodging and picking your nose.

Makes sense but from my experience you can get movement + dodging way easier automated than aim. What ffx said isn't wrong btw, I'm just saying that you probably are better off if you mix the gamemodes and not only practice one single raw skill.

You're doing it wrong...asyyy is right..you have to master movement and after that focus on raw heavy aim. Aim skill is based most on your movement + positioning and the ability to predict enemy's movement. How can you predict enemy's movement when you can't master your own.
In 90% cases i don't even dodge (on maps like thunder and eye to eye) couse i outaim enemies by predicting their movement, but i can do that becouse i master quake movement and engine phisics.
So, try to master movement practicing (even alone) on as much maps as you can, and when you'll do things naturally w/o thinking (like dodging/ take advantage of position) then you can focus on aim.

if you learn 2 strafe / properly read your opponent's moves, good aim will come naturally overtime.

you can play me, i'm down to play whenever i'm on, but like others said eye to eye is not the best way to improve raw lg aim. your lg will only improve on eye to eye, and very insignificantly improve on other maps

and unless you specify lg only, in which case i probably won't play you because lg only is fucking worthless and kinda gay, i'll mostly use rockets
