q2/q4/ql clone no. qw or q3 clone? yes. but making the game good is only half the job, actually putting effort into getting people to play it. That's the hard part (for ID).

I would pay for a quake5 but if it would be diffrent than other quake games. It must have new look (still engine that any computer can run), something like comic graphics, NOT REALISTIC!
Must have a ladders like sc2, or system like a battlelog/cod elite.

Totally different maps, maybe some new guns. Less config moderate options, no bugs/crashes like it's on ql.

Maybe add some game type like a DEFRAG in q3? It wouldn't be that hard to make it I think, old defrag maps, new records saving system (like a ladders).

The things that surely need to stay are: strafe jumps, rocket jumps, item timings...

thousands of games out there that deliver a decent multiplayer deathmatch ... there are even free fps like warsow or xonotic ...
noone wants to play them, there must be a big brand behind it and big tourney prizes for people wanting to play it ... deathmatch will never be the same again ...

but anyway ... why should you waste your time getting good in a multiplayer game ... I was a top player in my country in q2 ... that's enough for me, don't need to prove it again ... the whole quake scene is just too unreliable ... I don't want to invest effort into a game that might be dead again ... and that is true for almost all the multiplayer games out there ... the only multiplayer game I might play is a social or teamplay game, but not a duel game ... anyway I doubt I gonna play a multiplayer game seriously again ever in my life ... you do it once in your youth and it's good, but why continue for years ... ?
For me I like single player now better, these games end and then you put them just into your shelf (xcept if it's super metroid that you can play again and again) ... yeah, and you can get exposed again and again to new game ideas ... of course you cannot play single player all the time, but once in a while it's always a good experience ...

I think the most important thing is being able to organise a lan, bring someones laptop and install the server software and play with 0 ping up until all hours of the morning.

There's been countless competitions at lans here in Australia that haven't been able to go ahead because of this silly LAN issue with quakelive. I don't know about other countries but there would be a much bigger scene here if we were simply allowed to run dedicated lan servers without having need of the internet and ID's cooperation to run it.

Possibly, but I believe it's the only way they could truly "bring back" Quake. I'm not suggesting they dumb down the game more than they already have, but we need something that will feel refreshing for everyone so players of every skill level need to adapt, but more importantly are given the opportunity to discover new things.

I'd only start playing quake properly again if a sort of cpm-clone with a community website (sort of like teamliquid) for news and content was released. a good thing would be to register your cdkey to your passport, that way it'd be extremely hard to fake and be an ass, cos if you got banned its a lot more effort to get back, so ppl would take it more seriously.. its just so demotivating when ppl are cheating and trolling 24/7

Let's put it this way..... the class idPVS is in the gamecode, and the logic in idGameLocal::WriteServerSnapshot (in gamecode) is what uses the PVS to determine what entities to send.

I know for a fact you can force all appropriate entities to be transmitted if you need to, since I had to do that to make multipov work correctly regardless of where players are in the map.

it is mainly from the single player where these games draw their audience from for the multiplayer ...
also the multiplayer is free, once you bought the original game ...
if these games were released multiplayer-only at the start noone would play them

Well, I honestly don't think we'll see a resurgence of dm in the next decade if not the next century. But I think there is definitely hope if someone markets properly and sells the product right and gives it all the eye-candy and glossy features it needs while still having picmip and all that to satisfy the hardcore crowd. I don't believe people ONLY want something new and fresh like this moba genre LoL is appealing to, I mean, yes, Moba is kind of fresh right now, and it is popular but look at Starcraft in asia, old as fuck, still appealing to people, and look at Call of duty! It's the same game, same play, some new maps, a little couple minor tweaks, and your paying for the same stupid shit you played last time because "WHY?" EVERYONE ELSE JUST BOUGHT IT TOO AND JUMPED SHIP TO THAT GAME. Look at all the EA Sports games, people are constantly barely changing things and just re-releasing old shit, and it WORKS! Deathmatch isn't old, you're right, the way we sell deathmatch is old. We need some business majors to get their marketing at a whole new level in this industry that is still in it's early growth phase that will probably provide high yields in the future. Games have consistently stayed within the $60 dollar range even during recision and you know, the rich and poor alike buy them. This industry is very lucrative and it's clear from how much shallow programming gets put into them that the money is killing it in the same way the hip hop we hear on the radio is killing people. We need a company that isn't compromised. What Valve and Blizzard once were before they became big. What LoL is in a way... we need fresh blood.

IN SHORT: don't expect Id Soft to save deathmatch we need Indie Developers with DM experience to save this, I mean, take a look around. QLRanks, Prism, all that shit that the community is making! fastpaced fps is on the verge of exctinction. no matter how good the next quake is it won't be a success because the genre is more or less dead and people rather play slower more casual friendly shooters like cod or bf

To be totally honest with you not even I would want a QuakeWorld clone developed by ID Software, or any other company for that matter. Do you realize what a huge amount of time it would take for them to get the game to the same, polished state that the game is in today? This is just about what was fked up with Quake Live - sending the game back to stone age and never reaching out from that state again and not allowing the community to do it either.

Yes, but even if they would work fulltime on a Quake 5 it would still take them a load of time before they got it to be a competitive and stable platform with all the features that are there today.

Not so sure to be honest, unless they only put incompetent people to work on the project they'd know where to look, what to look at and shit.

It's only a matter of putting enough time and money in it during the regular development process.

they only have todo gametypes, idtech5 with rage engine is 90% quakewars, and how all the scripts etc work, and most of the driver code is probaly the same outside of quakewars gameplay specifics, which are not many besides in botAI classes

guis are alot easier to make, there is no gui editor with quakewars to make a base layout which takes 3 months todo manually setting up material co-ords

quake 5 is 99% maps and models

engines dev make base classes to use and package with licencee SDK

botAI and vehicles are engine base classes with quakewars specific changes

there is not much else that probaly does not come already done as part of the "engine"

DM and CTF are standard games, and they are probaly part of the engine SDK anyway

Projectiles based fps isn't gonna happen in a market driven by consoles and their controlers.

Not unless it had something new to offer.. (I would probaly buy it anyway, but unless it had something new to offer I wuoldn;t play it for long!)

I have been playing alot of BF3 lately and although it does not have the great movement as an infantry player, nor different options for e.g. duel, CA, CTF(although it does a variant of this with base caputres), nor the flexibility of setting up games fast, or spectating etc, that the great Quake games have, it(bf3) is a very polished + "a want to play more game".

Why is that? What makes people want to return? Not totally sure, but it excels at the excellent team coordinated play, with the squad play massivley fun in coordinating battles, and interchangable player types available on each spawn very important to winning the battles. With the local area map available you can see where your team m8s are much easier, and also you can identify nme players to show on the map for a short period, which can help to contol areas better. Less back rape which is a good thing, or hiding in a corner thinkng you are safe. It has a reasonably good web interface (which is far more user freindly to the QL one imho unfortunately).

If quake 5 could introduce some interesting game types, and features as above then that might also get me interested (and i am not talking freezetag here!). But until then I will picking up BF3 joining my squad, and battling against 32 other players.
