the interviews i meant are definitely part of the "dits en ecrits" books, but can also be found much cheaper in paperback editions of various collections of shorter texts by him.

the one where he mentions that we need "new, better drugs", is one about sexuality and power but actually quickly ends up in them discussing s&m and lust/desire. the part about drugs is short though, i was still stunned when i read it the first time.

I've been steadily improving my knowledge of Foucault for the past few years, for some reason his stuff just jumped off the page at me when I first started reading D&P in undergrad and I've continued reading him (almost) exclusively since.

Given that my honours is with the politics department of my uni I have been thinking that my thesis will center around the question of what use, if any, can Foucault's work offer in the field of political studies.

Clearly I havn't really watered that down much and it's still very vague. Basically I just need to find a topic I can wax theoretic on for about 50 pages :p.

If you are interested in reading some more stuff by Foucault himself you should really get your hands on the College de France lectures. There are quite a few of them, personally the best are 76/77/78/79 - after that he starts going on about ancient greece, and fearless speech and all that - not my cuppa tea.

Same goes for the 2nd and 3rd volumes of sexuality. The first was such an amazing continuation from D&P it may of well been the following few chapters :P. Sadly the use of pleasure in ancient greece doesn't concern me!

I'm a big fan of Gilles Deleuze too and right now I am reading his book 'Foucault'. Basically it's Deleuze explaining the metaphysics of Foucault's thought - it's quite cool.

i "deferred" this year too - tbh, if i wanted to start my thesis this year i'd have to get my ass to uni right now, 'cos i got exactly an hour left now - and i much prefer d&p/ sexuality part 1/ the studies on governmentality over the "ancient greece" kind of stuff.

while actually having two subjects at uni (politics and philosophy), my thesis will be with the politics department aswell.

thing is, this friend of mine uses exactly that, sexuality 2 & 3 and the later parts of the college de france lectures for his master's thesis.
the way he transformed this into a theory of the (modern) subject is quite interesting and made me re-think my earlier dislike of that particular part of foucault's work. maybe i was too quick to dismiss it, because it was different from the first book on sexuality, which i love and continue to give away to friends and family alike.

i'm also considering to see how foucault could be put to use in a more "classical" political theory concerning the state and modern society, albeit "classic" in this case means mostly hegel/marx/adorno --yeah, i do study in frankfurt :p

not only would i like to use foucault's studies on gouvernementality to enhance a (marxist) theory of the state, using sexuality 1 alone would also open up the thesis so i'd be able to include some feminist theory, because i'd really like to end it with a critique of those "classical" positions using the work of judith butler.

i don't think i've actually read anything by deleuze yet, i'm a bit wary of french authors in general because i never learned the language and prefer reading non-translated theoretical works.

I too, would really enjoy a chat with a fellow student of Foucault but it seems geography is our common foe.

On the topic of his later works it would seem that the main focus was the manner in which we become subjects, or subjectivation. I can't really speak for the works themselves because I've not read any of it - besides, perhaps, something I've seen in a compendium (like the exceptional 'Beyond Structuralism and Hermeneutics', P. Rabinow & H. Dreyfus). So it would seem your friend is on the money.

I actually wrote an undergraduate paper on the topic of how Foucault can be an effective critic of Marxism and it was the good mark I got off that paper which really set me down the road to reading more of his work. It is definately a rich vein for research - the state, political economy, ideology are all great topics that have a distinctively different flavour when looked at through the prism of Foucault.

And studying politics and philosophy in Frankfurt? Oh lawds I am green with jealousy. I am lucky in that I have encouraging teachers which (thankfully) encourage theoretical study, and don't dismiss it. Yet the wealth of history beneath your feet is incredible for someone like me, so far down under.

Do you want to go onto teaching in a uni? That is my goal but it is a long road there. I need to first of all learn a new language (French, duh? :D) which won't be happening until I complete honours and even before that I need to get a good mark and hopefully have my thesis published.

one of my roommates got his doctorate last year and became a lecturer at our philosophy department, but he received a summa cum laude on his dissertation and is a born entertainer... that's isn't me, right now :)

i also know a bunch of people who work for a prof and have to do some teaching on the side on their way to their phds and a great part of them is miserable.
the chances to become a tenured prof later are slim, the amount of work you have to do get even in the position to be asked to audition for one is insane, while the pay during this time won't be much in comparison.

being a lecturer is probably so-so, depending on the amount of teaching you have to do. most do this as a transition time while writing on their habilitation, but from what i've seen it's not easy to get a permanent employment at a university and most who do got the job because they knew someone in charge.

most of the freelancing lecturers can barely afford to live and no one could live off purely writing and getting paid at conferences and stuff at the moment.

in then end it'll first depend on how i do at writing my master's thesis, if this goes well i'll try to get some teaching experience and see if that even fits me.

This is what you wrote... my two links (war casualties and Normandy) are to give you some insight that D-day or not, without the eastern front and the russians, the only way you could beat Axis in Europe is if you would have nuked them.

Two things: first, I've read quite a few studies by historians arguing that the commonly held idea that the economic reparations largely led to the rise of Hitler is inaccurate (and that their impact on the economy wasn't as important as is often thought). I'm not familiar enough with the topic to make any assertions, but you might want to be prudent regarding the matter (I'm talking about the economic reparations here, not other aspects of the Treaty of Versailles).

Second, I don't really get the "principally the USA" part of what you just said. It was largely France (Clemenceau) that pushed for high reparations (and also Belgium from what I remember). Did Germany even have to pay any reparations to the US? I remember they had to pay around ~50% of the amount to France and the rest to the UK, Italy and Belgium, but I'm not too sure about the US. If there was something it was largely inferior to the sums owed to the others. The US lent money to the UK and to France during the war and refused to cancel their debt, but I don't remember anything about Germany. I do know that American loans then helped Germany re-build its economy (and also pay the reparations) - which is why the country was hit hard when the loans largely stopped after 1929 - but that was obviously not money taken away as part of the reparations.

Well I've had (quite a time ago i agree) a topic about economics History of Europe in my university years and I recall those drastic repairing debts measures played indeed a large part into ww2 happening... Now it's way too far ago for me to really talk about the subject in depths I agree :).


And yes, I do remember Belgium, France and UK indeed were a huge part of this... As you said tho, USA did not let go off their debts the allied countries of Europe owed them and obviously that meant those very european allied nations counted on Germany to help them rebalance their finances...

Also, when the 1930~ economic crisis arose, the USA did not play their role as an economic leader and if it hit any nation particularly, it was Germany.

Now seriously I've forgotten a lot of what I used to learn but in the larger scheme I think I still remember the big lines.
