all i hear is duel, duel, duel. Try to think about the other 80% of ql's userbase. The majority of players on ql are not pros or play competitively (eg: dont' play duel) and opt for teamgames (tdm/ctf/freezetag/insta/ca) or ffa. Those servers are not full. Certainly not FFA/isnta/tdm/ctf/freezetag. Passworded CTF servers might pop up from time to time but overall for the 75% of ql, who play on public servers, they are empty.

I'm not pro, just an average quaker and duel is still the gametype I played the most. you don't have to be pro or want to win tournaments to play (and enjoy playing) duels.

Hence why i mentioned brink,, merely for example purposes. I now get less than 70 fps and my ping has increased to 40 on ql so i have to believe everyone else has the same issues. Last year, i had a solid 125 and ping in the 20's.

Well, in the beta days, plenty of dev blogposts were written, by other members of the team who have since left like marty. You're probably right overall, but in regards to the blogposts and communication in ql, that certainly wasn't as big an issue in closed beta or those blog posts wouldnt' have been written.

Actually I should've worded it another way. If I still enjoy the game, and feel I can use the bonuses which come with premium despite the even smaller amount of subscribed people in December, I will renew.
Making premium maps available for everybody and leaving things like scoreboards, callvote teamsize, extended statistics to subscribed people would be a good way to make me feel so.

If they actually get some new good features in the game soon and there's a decent player base left (and university gives me enough time) I will renew.

will probably renew, i expect a pretty large update a couple of weeks befor the subscription year is over, because thats the smart thing for id to do, even if they do have the stuff finished by now.

if they release any large update now, people will be unsatisfied by august and say 'we haven't had a good update in monthy, will not renew my subscription'. if i were id, i'd wait for september to release any not map-related content.

one big lie can certainly be equated to their claim that "easily play against others at your skill level". That is a lie based on the current lack of players on ql. They reduced tiers to compensate for that. They should have removed that "gimmick" from their front page. I often have to play with players (way) below and I don't like that. I don't like to take from them enjoyment of the game by beating them quite badly. But then again, when/if I have some time to play games, I won't be wasting 10-20 min just to search for right opponent to play a 10 min duel game. Then again if I join an empty server often no one joins in even after 5-10 min, which makes me wanna quit and do something else asap.

The worst part is that I'm an ass in those newbs eyes, ruining their experience (not that I care much), just because there aren't enough players in the fucking game.

That's something you can't have, since it's a subscription service. When they do decide to shut it down, you won't be able to play it at all, since there is no way to host your own server.

If you want Q3 to succeed, you first need to kill off quake live. Keeping ql small only ensures q3 will remain small. So your logic doesn't add up there. Otherwise the same players who left q3 to go to ql will just go back, but that wasn't enough people to keep the game going.

I'm not complaining about the number of players. There is always a ca server to pop in to and tdm pickups are going on all the time.

It isn't Quake Live's fault. If we stuck with Quake 3 we too would have seen diminishing player counts as people realize that Quake is 10+ years old and move on to newer games or have real life commitments.

To blame the death of fast-paced deathmatch on Quake Live is wrong. It's an overall market trend and to be honest, I think a free to play game such as Quake Live has SLOWED that trend down considerably.

There are quite a few players such as myself who actually started playing Quake with the release of Quake Live.

The problem with Q3 was the playerbase. Quake has almost as many denominations as Christianity, and every single one of them is sure that they are the only one that should be used. Quake 3 doesn't have mass appeal anyway, but a fractured community only helps to destroy it.

Unlike Q3, you can't simply move to a different mod when a lesser denomination dies out. Rather than trying to play your cards over a long period of time, the Quake community has decided to all-in blind. I didn't blame QL on the death of fast-paced deathmatch - that would be silly. Even UT sells exponentially more copies, so QL is barely even a blip on the radar. While fast-paced deathmatch games do have an issue with market, it doesn't change the fact that QL has helped to kill what little market was left.

Quitting Quake does not mean that you have to play another FPS DM game. Those who only play FPS will likely move to something like CS/brink/TF2/COD. Those who played for competition (0.01%) will likely move to SC/SC2. Those who absolutely refuse to play anything but Quake-style DM games will either move to UT, or play Q3 - probably even the minority among ESR readers. Those who simply enjoy playing games in general will have no issues finding a new game, and likely already have.

i too started playing quake again due to quake live. I had taken a 10 year hiatus (played q2 before that), but quake live has made me completely give up on quake due to the actions of id software. I have seen the subscription model they used in other communities (not gaming related), one of which, now charges 89.99$ a month (was free). I kid you not. And that's just within the past 2 years.

Now ask yourself. Do you really think id is happy making 1-4 dollars a month off prem/pro subs? no, so there's a high likelyhood that they'll increase the price come this august. Some of you have totally forgotten that possibility, a real possibility (and that trend will continue every year to come.

id probably figures that the people who will renew, will renew at any price because they're addicted, are having fun (now at least), or have nothing else going on in their lives (and all their friends are on ql), or are rich and can afford any pricepoint thrown at them. But, main criteria they use will probably be #1.5 (they are addicted "to the fun").

I do think vedic is informed (not misinformed as you put it), but he's coming from a different perspective, as am i, and as are you. But in the end, no matter where our interest lay (pickups, competitions, clans, duel, ctf, leagues, etc), the goal, for those of us who want to relive the glory days of quake, is to ensure quake continues, albeit with a different development team and perhaps a different genre (it's possible quake has to morph into something that reflects current shooters, but in a way that keeps the game feeling like we know it).

The new generation of gamers are obviously not keen on the fast pace of things in ql, but with a few changes, they could perhaps learn to adjust (keeping things as they were in q3 will just create the same result as we're witnessing now). And that is personally my main argument against the "niche" players (who want to keep it small) which will only create the same scenario we've seen in q3 (small community > slow decline year in year out, as a small community = very narrow minded view of the game, eg: not open to many changes (changes necessary to keep things going and progressing forward).

Something, the quake community seems unable to comprehend (that quake as a genre is outdated), is that CHANGE HAS TO HAPPEN. Any talk of change is obviously met with an outcry of hatred (as witnessed anytime i speak of making changes to the game), but it IS NECESSARY (for quake to continue). .

In conclusion, i agree with your assesment (that quake live wasn't necessarily the only culprit for the demise of q3 (and that it was already written in stone (q3's decline), due to the new movement of pc shooters, but vedic is correct in the sense that the announcement of quake live killed off any hopes of a q3 revival (not saying it would have happened but well that's what happened).

Quake live shouldn't have been announced in 2007 for numerous reasons (mainly the fact that it is still bugged to hell). Instead, it should have been worked on and stayed in closed beta till it was ready, while a true successor to quake 3 should have been made in its place. Then, perhaps, with the lessons learned in that new quake game (we'll call it quake 5) its improvements could have been carried over to quake live (we'll call it quake 6, since that's the order it would (should) have been released in.

Bottom line, Quake live was preconceived and released far before its time. Simply put, it wasn't ready and it shows. Now people are left with a bad taste in their mouth and have found a general distrust in id and question their overall abilities (even if the truth lies somewhere between a small dev team/restrictions) and that is exactly the problem here; we have a vitriol of emotions over what we all came to love (a new quake game) but its general decline due to a complete lack of understanding and direction on the part of id and bethesda.

This is in fact the first community i've ever been a part of (not talking about esr) where input has been almost completely ignored by its development team (id) and where the community has been unable to participate and improve on the game (w/ few exceptions / new premium scoreboard, some new maps). It will take the community as a whole to fix the outlined problems and morph the game into something the "masses" will acknowledge and accept. Keeping it niche like, to satisfy the old school quakers, will do the exact opposite (will bury this game and the genre (quake) as a whole.

GTV, ladders, a functional skill-matching/stats system and mod-support. The basic system is great... it's easy to download, install the game and start playing. Everything past there can be questioned. If people could mod, they could add things like GTV and in-system ladders. That's how it's always been... Id has never provided GTV or ladders, it's always been done by modders. If the ladders were modded directly into the system (as opposed to being part of a third-party website), they would be more effective.

Id should tear down the Berlin Wall of modding. Let the modders in, let them mod, and we wouldn't need id to do much more than bugfixing.

I don't hate QL, but it's dead. I used to think it was Id's fault, but now I realize the genre is dead. People want more modern games, and those who liked Quake have grown up.

I've been a part of far too many dying communities to want to stick around and watch this game go down the same path.

I'd rather join a newer more populated game. I bought Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare 2. Going to buy Battlefield 3.

i dont hate ql. i dislike the development team and their "elitism" attitude towards the community and the direction they are taking this game. if i hated quake i wouldn't bother posting here; this is after all a quake site. But youre' right on your other point: its' dead/dying and yes they dont' care. If they did they would certainly be trying to convince people that the best is yet to come. But as many have said, they spend maybe 30 minutes developing this game every day which is evident by the fact that they have no time for anyone on their official forum. I point again, to the post made by stownr (not just a volunteer mod, but also close friend of theirs), who wasnt' even aware kickbans don't work. Don't disregard that little factoid. It's little things like that which prove how out of touch they are with the current state of the game. They aren't around enough to be able to differentiate the differences between the arguments for and/or against quake live and it's faults. They just chalk it up as whine instead of weighing the change in mood from a year ago.

For me, i've noticed little things such as:

-the clan forum front page spans 4-5 days on average (last year this time it spanned 1-2 days).
-The general discussion forum used to span abuot 2-3 pages a day. Now just a little over a page.
-getting started is only at around 15 pages (after almost a year). it was at like 100 after just 4 months in 2009.

Those are notable differences. Some can say, "well people are just posting less", but i would disagree. It proves there's less people coming into the game (as newbies are generally the ones posting on the forum). That level of attrition is having its effect ingame as well.

My posting style is combative, but it is constructive and i am fair in my points. If i agree with you, i will point that out. So i urge you to look at the entire spectrum of issues discussed in this topic and in others alike in nature before judging me. Again, i don't hate quake, but it's certainly not the quake i'm accustomed to in years past, certainly not the same development team who used to be in the forefront of the gaming industry and regularly attended Q&A sessions.

There has never even been an official Q&A session for QL, unless you count their question and answer sessions on radio tv online a couple years ago. But those were random questions asked by people who were there first and foremost to see some public king of the mountain matchups, and the devs simply decided to stick around and answer a few before heading out. Certainly nothing official since the original Q&A's when the game was announced to open out of closed beta (and those were sit down interviews, hardly a live Q&A session.

So then what do you suggest we do?

Like I said before I've been a part of a lot of dying communities, and I don't think I've ever seen a dying game suddenly revive itself. So at this point it's my opinion that Quake Live is doomed.

That's the problem. Id has let the opportunity to redeem itself go by. If only they would have kept their word and stuck with the promises they alloted to at quakecon 2010 then things might not have turned out this way. We certainly know rage and brink had something to do with their lack of development on ql, and that's a sad set of circumstances. By the time any funds come in from rage, people will have forgotten about ql and moved on. So yes it's a ballgame. I suspect quakecon to be much smaller in nature this year and we'll certainly see much less fanfare than years past.

There were a few arab players too And we all got along just fine. there was a big community of Circassian players aswell. Racism was present with some tdm teams, But overall we would get along.
it was a good community, alot of competition at times too and I played in some 2v2 with fiend, who is circiassian, in some 2v2 nations cup.

yeah same here, I turned off renewal aswell. not because it's too much money. just because I'm unstatisfied with the updates and the development of ql.
Don't get me wrong I would pay double the price if they would implement things which we are asking for. An Anti-cheat, a working skill matching system, cpm movement, fixing invite system ... only to mention a few.

I agree. Syncerror should be replaced. He's the manager of the game so he bears all responsibility for its failure. He's also been the one making the promises and then going back on his word. I too won't renew for that one reason alone. If someone else takes over ql i might consider it.

I've played Q3 TDM for about six years. dm6, dm7, dm14, osp5, osp6, cpm4 only. Hardly any updates. When everyone switched to vq3 we had netcode and sound modifications but still played the same game on the same maps.

Yes, ID software doesn't get everything right and they don't seem to put in much effort but honestly, the game's actually alright! I play QL TDM. dm14, osp5, osp6, cpm4, dreadfulplace, purgatoy, hiddenfortress, only. Hardly any updates. Enough for me and what I am used to.

I value not by updates but by the amount of hours I can enjoy the game and the capabilities it brings. While I had to pay a gameserver in q3 I can now pay a pro account, and I pay 50Euros a year and try to play TDM with my team, five days a week, 2-3 hours each. I'm a clanleader so I pay pro, my team pays premium. Enough for me.

Here's the REAL update "we" need:

-- More real competitive play and respect rather than casual public CA, statswhoring and comparing dicksizes (even within clans).

-- Less pickups and more clan acitivity. More identification with a clan, more "friendship".

-- More voluntary actions. Stop whining about how bad the game is (that you play 24/7 nevertheless) or how bad the community is and play more, be nice to newcomers, try to help people out, put in some effort into organization and evolution of your clan.

-- Also, we need more voluntary admins. The recent problem with the OC playoffs in CB have shown that there is hardly any connection between the players and the league platforms anymore. Praise PerpetualWar and doz3r who are running from ESL to ESH to CB and back in order to get some competition going for us! We need more admins than those two!

-- More admins bring: More official games, more cups and leagues. Also for lower div teams. Makes identificiation with and effort for a clan worth the time.

For that (and QL that imo could just stay as it is), I would pay.

newsflash: the consumer is always right, that's business 101. It's not our job to create leagues, leaderboards, ladders, fairplay (name me one game where people play fair without cheats lololol). It's the responsibility of the company (id) to do that. You got it all backwards.

First of all, I said that QL isn't perfect. However, I think it is good enough! If any of what you just mentioned is id's fault, it's lack of paypal... which is their business which I do not care about at all. What I care for is the game and as I pointed out I think the game itself is good as it is, quite enjoyable tbh.

The biggest problem these days is that there is a forum attached to the site itself and people come in and want to spam suggestions and feel pissed when nothing happens. Newsflash: In OSP there was no update in ages and people suggested tons of things that never happened. And still people liked the game, they didn't even care.

The most important thing you understood wrong may be because you are not from europe. I suggest you read up on league systems like Jolt leage where it was -- because of lack of admins within the community -- each clan had to provide one player as an voluntary part-time admin.
Right now we have only one active league, clanbase. It has two admins for TDM and both are voluntary admins who work their asses off for the community.

None of this has to do with the quality of the game or the company that makes it. And again, it isnt perfect but its definitely good enough imHo.

Fair enough, I'm glad "YOU" are having a great time on QL. However 23,000 people disagreed with that assesment since quakecon 2010. So, "your" perception of the game is obviously in the minority. As that 23,000 includes any new players that came into the game. In other words. If 10,000 new people joined ql last quakecon (when there were 78,000), then 10,000 of those new players left the game + 55,000 of the existing players. Now you tell me: are things progressing or going backwards.

I don't doubt that volunteer admins would help the "competitive" scene, but the problems with this game lie overall within the "direction" the game has taken (eg: flawed subscription model). That is what has to change or the downward trend will just continue.

So in conclusion: while your overall view is good, it will only affect a small portion of the playerbase (those in leagues, clans, competitive players), it will not however, please the masses who are "NOT FINE" with the game, especially those "not in europe".

So: your update which calls for:

speaks to clans.... it does not change any of the underlying issues with the game itself, and again that "community togetherness" is not the problem, the problem is, people in general (if speaking about clans) are not joining clans because:

-no leaderboard
-no ladders
-no GTV
-little clan features for subscribers
-no working (buggy) chatbox (local only - not global like in Wow; eg, meaning you can talk to friends in game (even if your'e not in game))

those are the features people want, especially those seeking to play in clans. That's the whole point of joining clans. So the whole point i'm making is, people in general are dissatisfied with the competitive features in quake live and thus, don't take clans, leagues, etc "seriously". That perception will change if the "direction" ql is going, changes. Get it? Id has to change that perception by implementing the features people have been asking for... this can't be rocket science to you...

and if you think clans are increasing, think again. The current quakelive.com forum clan page spans 3-5 days on the first page. Meaning: the first post (made today: eg, march 23) to the bottom post in that first page (if viewing in ascending order) spans to march 20 (in this case 3 days). On the old forum it spanned 1 day (meaning every single post made on that first page of the clan forums were made all in one day). In lamens: there are far fewer people joining clans or have interest in joining clans. Which also speaks volumes since new players to the game are usually the ones interested in joining a clan in the first place.

Those are the real reasons people aren't committing themselves to clans, not because the existing clans aren't serious enough(although the reason they're not serious enough is due to the 4 points i made)... understand?

This isn't autobalanced Black Ops public FFA and it never has been.
When I started a couple of years ago in q3 it was already a highly competitive game with a highly competitive community. I played enough public to be good enough to find me my first clan and slowly evolved. This step involved gettin to know the leagues there were, learning about and getting IRC, voicetools etc.

I put something in and got something out. That's how it works.

All the features you mentioned are additional, "nice to have". No one really needs them because the stuff is already there. Motivated streamers and commentators and league sites, irc,...

The game itself is just some game... what once made it awesome was a nice community where people helped each other out and did voluntary work to get stuff going. Thus, the problem lies not with the automated system (this ql site) but the lack of manpower. And you can't honestly want ID to hire admins to organize cups and stuff (other than qcon :P).

Last but not least: This obviously isn't the perfect game for the casual (3months per game) gamers who want the best graphics and don't want to put in any effort at all. Either the skilled members of the community manage to attract newcomers (who want to put in effort) by giving advice and being nice or the community will be the same. But the casual gamers are not a real part of the real community anway, imo. Thus, I do not care about most things you said.

I do agree that small niche communities help foster growth in clans and leagues, but you're forgetting one important element:

ID no longer wants to keep quake a "community" game. The subscription model proves that. They want to make money at this point. They are only looking for their best interests, especially since zenimax/bethesda are the ones funding the game at the moment. What do you think will happen when zenimax doesn't get back the 1,000,000 they invested in this game last christmas?

This game is a case study for a more or less new business model in computer gaming. And thus far I am sure it was an epic fail from a financial standpoint. All we -- the community -- can try to do, if we love the game (so not you obviously), is to keep it at such a self sustaining level by paying up if we think our playtime is worth the money and by organizing interesting competitions, for example, as voluntary admins in leagues.

You can come up to them with a brilliant script and convince them it's worth paying for, and they might, but in the end, they'll be even more frustrated when they realize they didn't get what they were promised. It's time Id gets honest with its players. That there's no true skillmatching system and that they don't have the time to fix it (for example, too lazy to write other examples, but you get the idea).

The problem isn't with the game. The game was doing fine pre-quakecon 2010. The graph i posted proves that. 78,000+ etc. The problem since, has been, and continues to be due to the subscription model; more so in the way it was implemented and in the way it restricts people to pay (no month-to-month, no paypal, etc). Again, its' the subscription model that needs altering. Not the game necessarily. I've certainly never agreed to a thousand shotgun changes, hitbox changes. They should just keep things as is and people will adapt.

No, its' the subscription model that is fatally flawed for a number of reasons that i dont' want to get into now (i will though, perhaps in my next reply if you continue to see it your way, since we're not arguing the way "i" want it, but the way the majority of players want it. It's that majority i keep oointing to that will save this game.

This is not about business models. ID could also decide to have only standard and premium and no pro or standard players could play everything but only for ten minutes straight on a server or premium members would receive purple rubber ducks. It's their business. You have stated the business 101. Tell you another rule: A company makes an offer and if you don't like it you go somewhere else.

In this thread the question was merely if people will pay another year for this game and I pointed out what's important for me to renew my subscription, because I'm sick of people being consumer only and always complain. In Q3 OSP I have seen what a good community can do even if the mod is not longer maintained, patched and improved at all.

If this company, their product or their business model is not for you, don't hesitate to go somehwere else. Was nice talking to you.

i agree with some of what you said, but their business model will closely choose the fate of the quake franchise. There's a lot riding in their decisions. They made a huge blunder last year at quakecon with the subscription model, that you have to realize has failed to produce the players, interest and revenue they hoped for.

People will pay for a service if they feel it's warranted. Read the last 3 pages of the following link (starting with sixty-five's comment at the bottom) and you'll understand why more people aren't subscribing:
