wtf? There are 88 people on the fansite that was obviously created by Joe/2gd, and even Tony posts there regularly with his account via his iPhone. Tainted? I don't think so. He says "Thanks for the support" and stuff like "T-shirts coming soon".
As for the spamming on IRC, some may find it sad that he became the star of UGC and from the 10k people that watched the stream / attended, only 88 could "like" him on Facebook. (I guess).

Tony is actually quite good, just needs to be more calm and have consistent aiming, sometimes he's fucking insane and sometimes he just cant jump straight.

Pro's are crap at FFA, they just can't handle the multi faceted gameplay and swings ofa FFA game. Its a sepreate skill that will one day gain the recognition it deserves.

To be fair, FFA is really much deeper that people think.
Actually, look at tony's stats in that game: he has lowest acc of all top8, dealt less damage, took more damage than almost anyone else in that game, yet still won the game. There's really some pretty complex separate skill involved in playing FFA that doesn't just come from your experience in other game modes.

you probably also noticed that he made more MG kills than anybody else while having a lower MG acc than all the pros behind him. This probably means he randomly shot at a lot of guys who had low health and was lucky enough to kill them with a few bullets.

I'm not trying to take anything away from him: This win is still very impressive. But it's pretty obvious that a 16 player FFA on dm6 has lots of random elements and those seemed to go in his favor. :D

If he was so much more skilled at FFA, he wouldn't be owned by fazz and spartie in all the other 4 FFA matches they played so far.

They aren't consistently winning. They are consistently better than Tony.

And yes, there are some tactical elements in FFA (like standing on weapon pickup places because they spawn fast; by doing this, tony e.g. owned cypher at dm6 when both were fighting freshly spawned and then he got like 3 more kills out of it).

But when you've figured out these basic elements, it mostly comes down to aiming and luck, and I think that's pretty obvious.

Due to the pros having better aim, they win in most cases. But with him having decent aim and some luck, he won dm6.

While "basically" I said: "To be fair, FFA is really much deeper that people think." Not even a word about tony. Tony was just an example. Just as fazz and spartie are examples of that too.
Luck is definitely involved in FFA, but first of all it's not that much as people think and second, it's actually one of the reasons why FFA may be sometimes more interesting than duel or TDM as a competitive mode. It's just makes the gameplay more exciting.
FFA actually has a lot of similarities with racing. Your goal is to get frags faster than everyone else, and like in racing there are random things like crashes, technical problems, weather, etc, FFA has its own set of random factors too. And because racing is still a great competitive sport, there's nothing that stops FFA from being great competitive mode either.

There are tactical elements, but they are really simple, of course things that pros that concentrate on duel and tdm wouldn't know or rahter, wouldn't do out of habit. For example:

- Deaths don't matter(in large FFAs) kills are more important
- run towards guy with quad

camping weapons is only useful with weapon stay, even with the weapons spawning fast it's not that useful. mg is better. All about the mg.

Deaths to matter, after you die you need to build up again. Much the same like duel, but in FFA its actually harder to build up, at times it can be some challenge to pick up a weapon. Not because of the braingame that happens in duel, but of the randomness of players positions.

I've played some games where i needed up to 90 seconds to get a weapon. In FFA, thats a lot of time, with high skilled players most maps don't last much longer than 5 minutes.

Nah, it's too wasteful to build up, I would say rather go for the lucky, random factor. Why wait 90 seconds trying to get weapons and armour when in that 90 seconds you can still get the weapons and armour (through luck) and have kills to your name.

No matter how much armour you have, you might still die instantly when you engage. Mind you, I specifically mean large FFA's.

To each his style i suppose. I hardly ever engage without a decent weapon, and most preferably i'd like some armor too.

ffa is a lot more about awareness of what's happening around you and notice how people dodge (if you want to do it right). Also 'not standing out' for other people is a skill some guys have in ffa (the ones that hardly take any dmg). It's a hard skill to make your dmg count in ffa though.
When for instance a spawner gets a rocket to his face, it's an ez mg pickup and when people jump towards health it's a free rail kill etc.

lol? they got beaten just because they were unfamiliar with playing ffa. while probably most of pros were randomly hitting everyone they saw, ffa player is trying to finish the most damaged guy when there is a bunch of them to choose from. just give pros several games more to understand mechanics of the mode and someone as tony would have as much cnances to win as to do that in duel. or maybe just a bit more due to luck as ffa is more random

ffa is little bit comparable with poker

you have to make the same decisions over and over again, just because they have the highest chance of yielding you fast frags.

ffa is more a statistical issue than duel. i mean the best player could prolly lose 3 of 3 games, just like in poker you cant win every game, because you have to deal what the game throws at your feet.

its all about your routines, the important ones are on witch spawn you try to get a specific weapon and attack what spot with it.

i bet you could anatomize a ffa style of play pretty deeply.

That's an accurate breakdown; there's definitely a few frag-intensive areas on maps to know and routes to run that maximize frags(RA>LG ammo>MH>YA). Interesting obs.

I've spec'ed tyryl in ffa before, and he's kind of an odd case. Knows quad timing but plays like the dueler he is, hitting essentially reaction shots, flicks and overpowering lg...almost like he's just testing settings or mouse. When the round's over, it's almost secondary that he won.
