ESR - Which OS?

sorry for boring you all with these posts.

So my OCZ Vertex 2 60gb arrives tomorrow and im not sure which OS to install and use. I do love Ubuntu since switching to it, its fast and easy to use and has a nice software centre, but the fact it struggles with high quality video is a bit disappointing as nowadays I only really use my computer for internet and watching video. So I could use Ubuntu again and just try harder to find a solution if there even is one or maybe try a different distro of linux? What are peoples experiences with other OS's? Also other distros of linux?

I've recently installed OSX on my PC. It's running natively and runs most normal things perfectly (internet, video, music, games - but quake live gives me some issues, but I haven't really tried hard to get it working, firefox was a fail, but maybe safari will work.) It wasn't difficult as such, but it did take some time and I needed to learn how to install drivers and such.

I used this distro:

osx still has no trim support (...) so your ssd gets slower and slower over time :/

the vertex 2 does a pretty good job of avoiding a complete mess but still it loses performance (have one on my macbook and it is not nearly as fast as it was 2 months ago after i reinstalled 10.6)
i think anandtech.com wrote an article about that some time ago.

just keep that in mind :)

Oh it's not my main OS, I just installed it for the heck of it, also will help in testing some stuff I'm doing. Also, garageband + logic = <3

The trim command doesn't solve the problem it will just take a lot longer for your drive to become slower.

Ubuntu can be a solution if you bother to tweak it somewhat. OSX is harder to get working with drivers and to get it to work you need OSX compatible hardware to solve the driver issues and even then they're not as optimized.

Both Ubuntu and OSX are great options to Windows 7 but I think the easiest solution would just be to run Windows 7.

Get yourself an ipad ... or a mac ...
or install win 7 ...

the only real options for you ...
linux is only really interesting for c developers, all other people are wasting their time with this os atm ...

actually i was considering either linux or freebsd for my fileserver because win7 is completely useless for any non-desktop use :/

Funny you should say that, some cop was talking to me the other day about how he moved over to mint as ubuntu was giving him problems.

he seemed happy with it so its prolly pretty noob proof.

http://distrowatch.com/ might give you a few ideas

if you cba with the installation (a bit of hand work required as it's minimalistic), archlinux is definitely worth a try and is about as slim as it gets.

some dists like ubuntu have special netbook versions although I'm not sure how much they technically differ from a regular version besides the gui.

if you just wanna test some, get livecds or install virtualbox and run them from there, then install as main os once you decided.

I got a oem version of windows 7 for something like 80 euro. It works fine and I tweaked it to pretty much behave like xp.
There isn't anything spectacular in win 7 that would make me recommend it over xp for typical home use, other then it being more future proof obviously.

If you have (or plan to use) >4gb mem you will need the 64 bit version.
