are they running bets at id yet on how often they can sell the same game/content to the community before people get fed up with it?

I heard they were asking a STUPID amount of money for maps like CP9 and CP14. They know the maps are worth a lot and people want them in QL, but I've heard the same figures as other people (50K).

Would make sense if their only work was Quake related, but they worked on maps and such for other games like Ghostbusters.

You can't really copyright level design/layout.

I'm not saying you Rip them 100%, but take the basic flow of what makes it work and go from there.

You can't copyright a basic layout of a map anymore than you can stop someone from making a ryu clone or a section of a race track.

I'm not saying copy it exactly, I'm saying take the fundamental flow of it and and work on it to make it different enough.

Good luck with that without messing it up totally - most map layouts only work in 1 way.

Also: There is no such thing as a 'global' copyright, why not just pirate the maps verbatim and allow players to play the maps in countries in which 3wave have no ownership claims

I say fuck 3wave. Either just put the maps in anyway, or circumvent it entirely. Or even better, i wouldn't mind ID paying someone else entirely to create fucking awesome maps.

That's why you can make a ryu clone, but not call it Ryu.

Its not the coolest thing to do, I'm simply saying if idsoftware want them, they could quite easily recreate them to around 75% accuracy and there would be little realwave could do and players would still have solid playing maps.

3wave is a significantly smaller company than Id and its' parent companies.

The legal costs for a test case to ascertain if in fact creating a similarly laid out map is piracy would de_stroy 3wave.

And after 2 years we are used to the average 50-60ms ping on .de

It's not that bad.. right?

For those whom have less than 60ms ping, it's acceptable (italian connections suck)
But it's kinda hard when you play vs european players with a 20-30ms ping
Lot of ppl here don't play ql for a high ping, and the community it's messed up because players are spread into all european servers and you notice the flag just when you watch the aftergame stats

ID software received 105 million dollars when they were bought by Zenimax... and you're telling me that can't afford to spend 50k dollars for all the 3w maps, which are 30+ maps? Plus, they're getting paid now and they have thousands of QL premium subscriptions, a lot of which should be going towards buying the rights to these maps once and for all.

I think those few maps aren't worth a fucking 50k, it's not only principle, look at the post above

Consider how much they lost on Q4/wolf, and how much they have to spend on Rage. QL subscriptions aren't paying for anything.

Paying for premium should be something tangible (which it sort of is), not just a 'support Id' donation.

The map makers are obviously greedy and they want to exploit the fact that ID would have to pay the maps in case they wanted to add these maps to their pool.

Also I don't think that it is justified to pay 50k for maps that are virtually way to old and not designed for QL in the first place. I know, in case I am being hated, maps that were designed for QL CTF are Ironworks and Siberia and they work despite all the whine of the boys that rather stick to the classic, very playable maps. (I am not going into 4v/5v discussion).

Bottom line: We need new maps - imagine what kind of awesome maps we would just get for $5000 if ID would call out for a mapping contest giving the winner cash thus receiving the copyright of the map and possibly making a lot of QL players happy.

That is very wishful thinking about the awesome maps for $5,000, in that id will never do that. Maybe you'll get one year of pro service for winning if such a contest were to be held. That's all. No, really, it is.
