Maybe there should be a community commitee specifiying what is due to change and the developers change it ... that would be a real democratisation. But who cares anyway, QL will live at max another 2 years then the servers will be shutdown

I remember showing it to a dude from the gym - It was just a quad run of me with different weapons a lot of normal stuff etc. (even with rocket jumps and blah) so he could see what you could do and what not. He told me that he was really good in Counterstrike (i kinda stopped to listening there) but I gave a try nonetheless. So I sent him the youtube video and was like.

"Oh, noes that is too hard."

You cannot compare FPS with RTS games.

Because they both require a completely different skill set. You usually stick to one genre (or in rare cases you play everything but still suck at everything you do in comparison :D)

I played wc3 2v2 and got to place 600 in the ladder. That's as good as it gets.

Also RTS games have always attracted more players that FPS games in general. Why that is? Well, for starters because in a game like, say, wc3 you do not get raped right of the bat. You can at least built some shit until you face your death. In QL you join a server and die instantly. Meaning that the learning curve in QL is definitely bigger than in WC3 - or at least one experiences it differently. You get what I mean?

In WC3 you need:

- micro (obvious -_-)
- macro (bo/shopping etc.)

In QL 1v1

- timing
- aiming
- movement
- desicion making i.e. when to go where; backing off; fake rocket jumping whatever (you could even fake attack i.e. send some units to their expansion while you go all in their main base BUT that's not the point here)

They are two completely different games that attract different kinds of people hence the suggestions that you cannot compare them (that easily).

football and pool require different skill sets but are still massively popular and they don't attract different kinds of people. your argument is invalid.

Unless your playing in China or something there are always loads of people playing QL at all hours of the day and I never have any trouble getting a game.

Quake is hard to learn, hard to master.

If you'll get owned, lets say, 8 times out of 10 games (which is standard for noobs) it's normal that you don't have ANY FUN playing this game. You get frustrated more and more, with every game where you can't do literally nothing, where you see players which are million years ahead of you - then you start to think of abandoning it completely. One would think - it's not worth it, there are other, easier games which can give as much fun as Quake would probably do. Fuck it!

Of course there are people who can quickly adapt to Quake environment and they learn the game quite fast, but it's only minority. For most of players, it's such a long process which sometimes takes years, and you can't assume that you'll get better all the time. People get stuck with their skillset and at one point, the don't get any better any more. You get stuck in mediocrity, which can frustrate as well because you "sacrifice" for this game so much time.

SC and SC2 is easy to learn, hard to master. Same goes with CS. And those games have HUGE communities and great number of tournaments.

Quake is a different story. I double that we'll have ever a huge and healthy community. Quake is underground and whilst there are tournaments here and there, it's not a big esports title. We are small, hermetic village, where fresh blood isn't really welcome, because it's hard to live here. While it's a great shame for such a great game, sadly - it's truth. QuakeLive's serious tournaments are only lasting because of Carmac, DreamHack guys and their love for the game.

Rest just don't give a fuck but who can blame them? I bet quake numbers are so low in comparison with CS/SC2/WC3 (in past), hell even SC1. And obviously numbers rule the world now days.

On top of that, we have pathetic community. There's no love for the game itself, no passion. Even top players are like: I DON'T GIVE A FUCK, with couple of exceptions. We are burned out.

Look at TeamLiquid, they had literally nothing in SC for years - only Korea mattered and had major tournaments. Even though the community in EU/NA was quite huge, there weren't any serious tournaments besides WCG once a year, there wasn't any serious money involved whatsoever. But for the love of community and game they made the best content wise site in esports I've seen in years and they even came up with TL StarLeague and now they're huge.

ESR is laughable in this aspect, and it's a major Quake hub, hah. And it tells much about the game state and community if you ask me.

While I love this site, it's sad that it's only a sinking ship and nothing really more :-]

I might be a bit too optimistic, but i do think that with only a few changes this situation could be completly different.

The success rate of a game is relative to the opponent you play, nothing else.

If you're winning 8/10 games then you're either a pro or you're playing people considerably worse than you given even skilled opponents should return a 5/5.

There are plenty of people out there that would stuff you to 10/0 and you don't even know they exist.

Some gamers play games to feel falsely good about their wins, a true player is never happy until they win that "unwinnable" game.

Only then does it mean something.

I think that "anger" towards new players comes from frustration of old players, I mean even i know a fuckload of old players who cant beat even me, though i am new to quake 8D

Its like this is the survival of the fittest, only ones that adapt and learn fastest will have fun with this game, others not so much as they will get frustrated by the fact how they will get outplayed by a lot less experienced NEWBS.

I talked mainly about duel since thats what i have played, but since its only "worthy" mod this applies to whole community.

What do you expect community-wise if there are are people coming into your game not even bothering to learn at least the basics (e.g. movement) and befoul our beloved quake games with there bad casual-short-attention-span-lazy attitude. We don't want this scum (at least I don't). And furthermore is id software catering to this very people and have watered QL down to get away from being a hardcore game to a more casual game.

I think ID need to do more and the community is right to whine. I thought that now thousands of people are paying that they would have been more transparent on what they are working on and when they plan on rolling new stuff out - not just maps but website improvements, clan improvements, matchmaking, gtv, chatrooms, community news, leagues and ladders, social networking, onsite demos, onsite videos & movies, new gametypes and the rest! So much potential.

I am starting to get the impression that Quakelive is merely a testbed for something else. We are guinea pigs!

If ID came out tomorrow and said 'GTV due by Christmas' then thats fine even if it takes till Easter because at least we are aware that its being developed. Maybe a little screenshot of gtv (or anything else) on the website every now again just to show its in development. How hard is that?

Why should they need to do more work than they already have? They have achieved their goal >>> lure a few people to buy premium. But not even this because they were just planning on charging for private servers and the like. Now they have achieved even more >>> made lots of people pay for one year up-front for additional content and just let them spawn private servers (through id software) for double the price.

From id's pov the should be really proud of themselves, even though they've wasted 2 years of time and money beforehand.

So what have we learned over the past 8 years? - If a game is good people will play it. If a game is bad, no kind of match-making/server-browsing/community-commitment will change that.

QL has a strong player base for being as old as it is. Kind of hard to bitch about the "state of things" considering its age.

I'm not sure if QL will ever have a large player base again. Back then there wasn't all of these new FPS shooter games out like we have now, with team shooters probably have the larger playerbase. It wouldn't be a hard choice for a new gamer choosing between QL and another shooter.
