They don't exist.

If you are referring to 120hz monitors, they are still expensive and there aren't that many of them around, most comps in the past 2 years have been using normal LCDs.

owned.tv now has an option to manually save recordings so the vod's will be right after the recording is finished. although they will not be labeled.

I will get my broadband not until next weak and I only have 2gig on my cellphone via umts.
I really want to see this I know there will be demos BUT I WANT TO SEE IT LIVE. So I doubt that I can watch the hq stream and even the low stream will eat up my 2g like nothing -__________-

- watch demos right after the game
- watch vods one week later (lql)
- screw it and watch it live and probably use all my 2g or jsut watch the semifinals and final

I have no idea how long I can watch with 1-2g. Zomfg need my flatrate :***/(

How hard would it be to code a Qlive clone from Q3 source using what they have probably stolen from cpma and osp anyway? I mean, they changed hitboxes slightly and netcode, some damage here and there, tightened up some of the maps, but those could be easily ported.

Plus all Qlive does for stats is pull some information from a generated xml-style file and dump it on a web front end. Someone could make a lite version of this where you just had your name (no logins, etc) associated with your cd-key and your stats could be uploaded via a little applet after each game.

He is using a small amount of accel I believe. Not a huge amount. When I was sitting in on some DaHang vs CZM practice matches he was switching between high sens with no accel to that 3.5 with some accel and his rockets were so much more consistent with the high sens but hitscan suffered a tiny bit.

and on a hunch I just looked for something that looked similar in the page source on the QLTV stream page (FlashVars="channel=tetv.esltv.external")
i tried just changing the last bit but that doesn't work, so i changed both bits at the end instead
sorry i don't actually know shit about octoshape or how these links work it just made sense to me

I'm not 100% sure but I think that the maps are decided by tossing only, not picking. So, if I'm right it's toss, toss, toss, toss. Then 3 maps that are played stay and you only pick the order.

That would explain why some maps are just tossed every single time. Stupid rule, to be honest, as it makes introducing a 7 maps mappool pretty much useless.

Cant really understand what it is about czm :D
Most of the time during the games he seems to be really spot on, good aim, smart play.
But then in some situations he just shots horribly and makes dumb decisions that even i could have done much better :O)

hope he can get into the zone for the playoffs !

I think it's lack of experience in QL and generally the "slowness" of getting in shape after a long break. He can't yet intuitively fell what to do in specific situations. If we look at cooller when he decided to start gaming seriously again, it took him several months to get back to top3 level and cooller didn't even had complete break from Quake, he still played Asus'es for example.
czm is only practicing for about a month. If he continues, I'm sure he will be able to do very good @ IEM World.

You are an absolute ignoramus. Don't lie - have you ever heard any "pro" caster say anything, anything at all, that anyone who has played Quake knows, or that someone who has done regular duel casts for the past two years knows?

Most casters just are good at filling silence, they rarely say anything truly insightful. Their very base analysis is something that QLTV can easily make up for.

I can't recall ever hearing Joe, 2GD, Djwheat, slasher, whoever, say anything that I really thought to myself "I DID NOT KNOW THAT!" or something that I would expect greased, jehar, and fish not to know.

There's no analyzing. I think what people like about 2good is that he makes good calls on what the players will do or need to do, and that is something that the viewers can either agree with or disagree with based on their experience. These other casters just fucking repeat what everyone can plainly see on their screen (except the blind), so it doesn't get the viewers involved and thinking about the game their watching. Instead they'll watch the game and try their hardest to tune out the annoying casters until they eventually mute them.

Edit: Also 2good can probably beat 90% of the people who watch the games, so just listening to his casts can , in some ways, teach you some things about dueling. And i'm not a 2good fanboy. I'm just someone who prefers hearing casters who are good at the game. Like rapha, or calipt, they are both entertaining casters just because they have good insight.

Would be nice if this caught on enough to where there was a market for casters, so that after rapha is done playing, casting might be something he'd do. The couple times I've heard him casting/commenting about matches have been really nice to listen to. The guy truly understands the game.

a prime example of this are the starcraft casters. tasteless, day9, artosis etc all were/are active progamers. casting by non-professionals like thegunrun just isn't acceptable given the standard that those pros are setting.

Well, he played aggressive in the past, but to say that we see massive aggression from him all day long after he played 2/3 of his games of the day in totally +back defensive style, is a sign that commentators don't actually think of what they say. As if someone told them in the past that Vo0 is aggressive and they just repeat it like parrots, lacking ability to make their own proper judgement.

Bullllllshiiiiiiiit.. GS and jehar literally do not know _anything_ about dueling, have never played the maps, don't know what is going on, get all excited at the wrong things and then talk over incredibly important key fights that change the control of the map. It's embarrassing and they need to stop casting.

And for those mentioning 2gd, I think he's only marginally better, since his experience dueling is in Q4 mostly.

Rapha and calipt are the only people I've heard on a shoutcast who actually say relevant things regarding the action and the flow of the map, and who needs to be doing what and when. They also get quiet when important battles come up, but that's because they don't have radio personalities + they are interested to see what happens. You need someone like wheat + rapha.. wheat just giving the play by play and someone like rapha/calipt doing the analysis.

The ql.tv guys just describe what they see on screen. 2gd at least talks strategy, why the player is in a given situation, how they can get themselves out of it etc.

Yeah, if you're not into sc2, i guess it doesn't make too much sense except for semi-finals and finals in ql. Still, with a pay-per-view stream you're obviously not paying for the stream itself but for the event as a whole. That's the price you pay for having lan events, and esl's pricing structure is more than reasonable. Plus, they seem to have switched away from octoshape for their main stream, which is definately a plus.

the casters are too occupied trying to fill dead air which results in worthless gibberish most of the time. play-by-play commentary should just be relinquished completely, everybody can see what's going on (spoiler: it's a video game). casters should concentrate on laconically analyzing the gameflow and what's going through the players' minds instead of spouting stuff like BAM nice rocket to the FACE

I highly disagree. It's so fun when you have good players + good/informative cast + good quality. I don't watch that much, however I loved GSL, especially Koreans. They are already so crazy in this game pulling some awesome and very creative stuff, making foreign scene look so average.

I never saw the fascination with watching starcraft / sc2 until I started playing SC2 a lot over the past month. If you play a lot and keep up with the game it's amazing to watch. Problem is it's so much about metagame so it's a bit shit if you don't know the game well.

The games just vary a lot more, different players have different styles, lots of different matchups and maps, limitless amounts of strategies which seem to develop and change constantly (partly because it's a new game I guess), lots of clinch moments and comebacks that swing the games back and forth and imo from playing at a fairly high level in FPS duel and mid-level in sc2, a higher level of skill displayed than in fps duel games (I'm sure a lot of duellers/quakers will argue that, just my opinion though).

Check out some of the fruitdealer games from GSL. You can watch the first map from each match with a free account - http://www.gomtv.net/2010gslopens1/schedule/

Prefer it a lot to watching quake now. Converted after about a decade... You really have to know the game though IMO, and I guess it's not for everyone.

CZM's aim is completely off. ZeRo4 doesn't tend to beat Rapha in most matches. DaHang is a bit on/off. Of all oldschool players it'd be cool to see Socrates and Fatal1ty although I doubt they'd challenge either. It'd be nice to see some newschool talent coming through, but honestly: who is there?

No. Zero4 never hung with rapha, only in 2008 when rapha was bad.

The way the American scene is now, rapha is on a league of his own.

Dahang has never been the same for months, and he isn't improving like other players are. I remember when t7 was dahang's map and no one could beat him on it, now dahang can never beat rapha on that map and he has been beaten by some average players on the map too. Rapha has his number too, I don't think he can ever manage more than a map in any game vs rapha. Something needs to change for him to crack the top tier.

CZM needs to learn the maps and the tricks of quake live. Even though his aim was pretty poor, he was being outsmarted by rapha many times, and rapha managed to bait him so much. Needs more experience before he can even try to challenge the top level.

vo0, however, is the most promising player. Excellent aim (could work on LG though) and probably the best rockets of any player in this tournament. I think he needs to keep at it (and tone his aggression down just a bit) and he may be able to challenge rapha sooner or later.

Besides these players, the one player that I have my eye on is jovire. His rocket aim wasn't that great, but his LG and rail were strong, and he has good map knowledge and movement. He's fairly new so he has plenty of time to get better.

He's the only one in USA who can reasonably pretend to compete against mad pro europeans like killsen/cypher right now.

I mean, today, seeing those USA matches at the same time as, lets say, Cypher-Zsx, it seems there is just such a huge gap between them. A gap of like 40% acc. And Cypher had 90ms while americans where on LAN...

Indeed, it makes rapha's performance even nicer cause there isnt anybody of his skill in USA whom he could train with

Hmmm I'm pretty sure it was cypher who rapha handily beat at the dubai challenge last year and made a comeback against him at the IEM world championships semis after going down 2-0.
Of course, Rapha is only pretending to compete. All his titles he won beating those same europeans are just errors.

I think you misunderstood. He is saying that there is no one on the top level of rapha-cypher-cooller-k1llsen-av3k (arguably some others but these are the only players that have won championships). I want to add, I think the biggest thing holding players back is aim. American players have such poor aim, even on LAN.

I don't agree.

Only cypher & k1llsen (along with strenx?) get super strong aim. It's like 2 (3?) people out of "many".
I'm not talking about stermy cuz i don't think that his aim is better or even as good as strenx :). Z4muZ can be considered as a strong aimer aswell but he's a bit slow (even tho his movements are smooth as hell) and overall his aim is very "situation-dependent". Spart1e ? well, it's really hard to judge this guy cuz he's quite inconsistent these day. Noctis ? even worst than spartie :P. Fox ? retired + balanced, smart & calm player.

so you see... not THAT much very strong aimers compared to america. Also, don't underestimate DaHanG, chance or even Vo0's aim (not even talking about some people like carnage who ae very good aimers but still lack the experience and the "mentality" to succeed at duel).

About stermy, yep. But his rail can't be better than strenx rail. As good as strenx rail, at best.

about cooller, yep, cooller's aim is better than rapha's. but cypher and k1llsen (strenx, z4muz, probably even stermy/spartie) still got better aim than him. but by better aim, i don't mean that they outaim him constantly, far from that, but at such a lvl, even the extra +3% lg can make the difference, same for the rail misses (and cooller tends to miss his rails more often than a player like stermy etc, i mean, his rail can be deadly ofc, but is still too unconsistent compared to his others weapons or his map control). btw, if you refer only to 1 game, then your judgement of cooller's aim won't be 100% accurate.

about av3k, i would say that he's a balanced player, with no real weakness, and ofc he has one of the best plasma, if not the best, ever. but you can't win with plasma only you know :). and like i said, he's a balanced player, he can play agressive/defensive, with good mapcontrol, smart play etc etc, but still, his lg or rail isn't as good as k1llsen or cypher in top shape. ofc sometimes they are fucking close, but it's basically the same for all the top8-5 players you know... and not only in EU.

about zsx, well, keep in mind that cypher was playing with 90ms, and zsx had low/lowish ping. ofc zsx is still an aim whore overall, but still don't overrate him :)

DaHanG, chance, carnage are all solid aimers, it's just that the american pro duel scene is smaller overall than the eu pro duel scene.
btw, if you think that 20% LG, 30% rail mean anything, then you don't know what you're talking about. this game is far from being only about "raw aim", it's also A LOT about positions/dodges/when to attack/when to +back/how to get the right angle/prediction/playstyles/weapon usage/etc etc.
for example a player like cooller can win a lot of fair 1on1 lg fights vs some well known strong aimers (like stermy, zsx, spartie etc) even with only 28-31% lg accuracy. sometimes movements and reaction time are better than "robotic prediction locking aim"...

about the youtube video, well, that's just 1 situation out of many. And dkt failed only a red armor, other than that his rl spam was actually quite decent cuz he managed to hit like 1.5/1.8 full face rocket(s). apparently he tried to confuse chance with the spam and also control chance's position so that he couldn't get the right angle to pixel rail.

Cause the truth is, Quake Live has increased the importance of aim, with rockets at 1000 ups, LG 7-7-7, and players hitting 60% rail - if you can't hit close to what you need to it, it really doesn't matter how smart you are, you will lose.

That youtube was just a hillarious example. But I am just dumbfounded as to how k1llsen can have the most absolutely ridiculous aim in the Zotac cups, and then half of the american players can't track LG or shoot their rail with any semblance of accuracy. How are they supposed to survive an international competition when they have trouble hitting 20% LG?

more like everyone has improved since then and the mappool isn't the same.
he's still 2nd right behind rapha, don't forget that. and besides the fact that he didn't place top3 at the last major events, he's still dahang, i mean he can still give very close games and some very hard time to the best of the best duel players (talking about quakecon/gamescom etc etc). in fact it's more complicated than "omg omg he's only top5-8, omg omg, he sux now !", there are so many different factors that you have to take into consideration. you just can't go like "omg he's 5th, where are his 50% LG 80% rail accuracies ?, this is not dahang anymore". ofc he can have his bad days etc, but still...

well, wrong comparison imo :). at the end of vq3 era, some people were already such aim whores. ofc in 2010 the overall "aim lvl" is a bit higher, but still... btw, only k1llsen and few others can hit 35%LG 50%RG vs the very best players... cuz when you get better, not only your aim is improving, but also your movements/dodges.

even if it was osp/cpma vq3, keep in mind that we are in 2010 now, so, ofc you can't win anymore onlywith "omfg imba smart clever einstein strat/tactics" anymore. ofc nowadays you have to be AT LEAST a very good aimer to compete with the best. seems pretty normal to me, it's QUAKE after all, it's an fps, you need skill to win.
btw all the weapons changes as well as the hitboxes/player accel/gravity changes are VERY good changes. just make the game more enjoyable/balanced than the old and boring vq3.
And no, i don't agree with you, in duel, a smart player will always have some advantage over a dumb aimwhore. keep in mind that k1llsen isn't only a rail, this guy is also very clever, you have to play him to understand :).

No matter how you put it, how come he hasn't improved? He's been playing just as much. Everyone has had the same time with battleforged, aero is the only excuse he has. T7 he used to be dominant, not anymore. No matter how you put it, he's gotten worse relative to everyone else.

2nd in America, where there is literally no competition. America really doesn't mean anything, and I say that as an American. If he is really top tier, get a top 5 placing at an international competition.

The point of this debate is whether he is top tier. Not anymore, there are many players that can give close games to the top tier. Heck, even someone like draven can beat cooller online. But he needs to actually beat some of these top players at LAN if we are to call him "top tier".

Chance gets that placing at an American competition. On the international level I would be surprised if he could break top 15. And when I say he is hot/cold I say that primarily about the aim, sometimes its' really good, other times its terrible.

I repeat, about aim. And honestly, guard and garpy and a few other players have improved drastically and I think that one of those two will turn some heads in a future LAN. I never said they werent. But chance? What has chance ever done? International level is the only level that counts. And Chance hasn't ever done anything on the international level. If garpy, guard, calipt, zsx were to duel chance today I'd put my money on the euro player.

Honestly I think both of those players could take a map from Dahang. They get shut down by k1llsen's raw aim in the zotacs, but once they have some breathing room, which they will against dahang, they can shine.

Stop comparing them to rapha/dahang. I'm talking about euro mid-level vs the american. Of the americans, only rapha and dahang have cracked the top tier (and dahang not so much lately). I'm comparing the euro non top tier to everyone else besides rapha and dahang. And fact of the matter is that euros just blow away Americans in this category. every single player I mention you go "Oh they cant beat rapha and dahang" - well no duh! thats not my point. my point is that the overall level of talent is just

btw, all these players are not really known for their "omfg super strong aim carnage rampage mode", they are obviously good/very good/excellent aim players (when you play at this lvl, it's pretty "normal" i would say), but that's all.

my original point is that americans' aim is so bad compared to these players.

btw, only k1llsen and few others can hit 35%LG 50%RG vs the very best players... cuz when you get better, not only your aim is improving, but also your movements/dodges.
Cypher has shot that kind of accuracy, rapha has, cooller has, av3k has, stermy has (rail), strenx has. They all have their hot moments and usually shoot a pretty damn good level of accuracy.

more like he manages to always put himself in "dominant" situations so that aiming and all these stuff become a bit easier for him and a bit harder for his opponents. "twice as good" ? not really :). like i said, duel is far from being only about "raw aim"

what you said is true but its not what I meant. I meant exactly what I said. Rapha's raw aim is still levels above all the other Americans. No one in America has comparable LG, rail, rocket (vo0 for rocket, maybe). And in euro his aim isnt even anything special. That's reallly saying something, when someone with rapha's aim is the best America has to offer.

I'll repeat what I said before again, QL is far more aim based than Q3 was. So things like LG% and rail%, they actually do matter, especially when you cannot hit the acceptable level of 30% LG and 50% rail like half the American players cant.

Obviously k1llsen is more than aim. But I think you are totally missing my point. My point is that American players (besides rapha and dahang FFS) have such crappy aim that they would just be blown away by the raw aim of any top tier Euro player and some of the lower players as well.

I'm watching them use their LG and I'm thinking to myself how are they ever going to win a shaft fight against a euro player. They aren't.

Euros learned every trick rapha has.
Its 3 international lan tournaments in a row that he doesn't win.
If anything cypher is the best player at the moment quakecon, ASUS cup, all recent tournaments,ESWC and others were so long ago and much changes in 3 months or so in quake.
Rapha was the best in the past until ESWC after that every top euro player got better and rapha couldn't keep up.

cooller beat rapha twice in ASUS cup, winners bracket and loser bracket. Rapha didn't even win a single map on both games.
If rapha didn't want to take ASUS cup seriously he simply wouldn't have gone there, so he toke it seriously, after all he only lost to cooller.
Oh and cooller was the only guy that beat k1llsen on gamescom without losing a single map, something that rapha failed to do.

This is my opinion of course, but I still have yet to see anyone do the things that rapha does. In any situation rapha always manages to find away to escape taking the least amount of damage and dishing out the maximum amount of damage. No other player compares to rapha's trickery, and the kind of absolutely ridiculous things he pulls. He's always positioned in the right place, with the right weapon, and knows when to leave and how to avoid dying. Even cooller can appreciate the absurdity of what rapha does.

Of course there is not much he can do when someone can shoot a rail gun like k1llsen can, but I think its only a bad string of luck, he'll be back.

It�s ten minutes into the first match of the Intel Extreme Masters American Championships and there�s already been some controversy among the players. Right now, Chance �chance� Lacina is taking on Sander �Vo0� Kaasjager. The players watching the match noticed that Vo0 had on a command added just last year that, when an item is picked up, will display the time that item was picked up on the bottom of the screen for four seconds.

For example, if you were to pick up the Mega Health at 2:34, then 2:34 would appear on the bottom of your screen for a few seconds. Since the consensus among the players was that the command shouldn�t be used, it was never used in matches. However, because this was just common knowledge it was never really a written rule� until now.

Since this wasn�t in the rules, the ESL admins gave the players the option of voting on whether they wanted the command allowed in the tournament or not. The players voted and they decided that it shouldn�t be. With that, Vo0 removed the command and will not be getting a penalty. Apparently, in Vo0′s defense, he didn�t even notice it was on in the first place.

The talent is out there. NA just gives me the impression that they are less serious about competitive gaming, and more about having fun.

CTF: EG only had to take on fnatic, resulting in very close matches. Fnatic, however, lose to broken and k1ck on a regular basis.

And don't underestimate spermy and av3k. Spermy is the rapha killer and av3k can easily win vs everyone. In addition I wouldn't take out strenx because he lost vs every tournament winner pretty close (qc cypher/cooller and gc k1llsen).
This being said I wanna see a k1llsen cypher final both in their best shape. I think this would be one of the greatest finals ever :)

Imo DaHanG has a little config problem. Hes not so accurate as he was before. Also movement is curious and nervous. Maybe im wrong, but i think it is. Anyway GG and he confirms that still is nr 2 i America. Big GG for czm, and if he dont stop to play, than will be very strong so soon !

well CZM has been inactive in quake for years. We'll see how he does at the finals. Cooller wasn't his sharpest when he first came back but is now one of the top players. CZM could easily regain top form if he practices religiously.

To those that don't get the poor aim in the NA scene, it's very uncommon that any two very high level players will have LAN comparable ping. I don't remember the last time I connected to a server with under 60 ping. Usually 90 is what I average. So the European players that are used to 30 and less, yes, they'll have a lot more experience and practice using brutal accuracy to their advantage. NA players don't get this luxury, so even if they match their opponent with strategy, they simply don't have a daily means of practicing with LAN ping.
Yes, I realize there's more to Eu than Sweden, but I'd love to know the avg ping of players like K1llsen, Strenx and any other uber-aimers you can think of.
For reference, how often did Cypher lose in Zotac with his ~80 ping? Just about all of 'em?
Do you think he'd be losing on LAN? I don't.
