well, can't be the just the results of duel, causse I don't recall any important ql tournament where UK duellers placed significantly better than Germans or Italians.

this is based on the results of the previous season, where zsx and garpy both played at the european finals

tdm results of enc 2010 are included in the ranking with a minor percentage afaik

TDM results must have more than a "minor" influence otherwise you couldn't explain the difference between germany, iceland and austria.

Also there are lots of duel players, in germany at least, that don't give two shits about TDM and rightfully so (if they don't like it or don't have the time to compete in both), because why would anyone give spots in duel tournaments to nations that did well in TDM rather than duel.

maybe the differences in points were only very small but still had a big impact on slot distribution
it can always happen than one side has, for example, has 10 points accumulated and the other side has 9.99 points and will make a a 1-2 slots difference

It's just a price compraision. To put things into perspective. The money they want for people to get the premium and pro accounts are truly in all sense of the word, pocket change. The game is still free of charge to play, you don't need to pay anything to play. Not even the new maps, as you can still PLAY them with a standard account. Although, it's limited to play them with bots for non paying users (and bots suck, I know but that doesn't change the fact that you actually can still play the maps in question). And you can still get invited by pro users to play the maps with them.

burned was the best belgian in the benelux eps, so he gets the belgian slot
on the other hand draven was the best dutch player in the benelux eps, so he gets the highest slot assigned to the netherlands

Hmm, interesting that if you won 3rd place in some EPS thingy, you are qualified, but if you won 3rd place in the European Championship itself, you have to qualify...
Also strange country slots distribution. 2 slots for Russia in main round? 3 slots for Belarus, but only one for Ukraine which has probably 20x more good players?

well the general concept is good i think. its similar to the champions league, you have your regular national season the best from each country qualify for the more prestigious international event. there is still work to be done and the infrastructure isnt up to the task in every country, but the esl seems to be getting there.
on the other hand, it prolly never going to be the most accurate way of determining the 32 best player...

but i would also invite not just the champion from the last season, but maybe the top 3 (making the match for third place a bit more important on the way)

the last part of your reply is part of the answer.

there are actually countries in the middle east that do not allow their athletes to compete with israeli athletes. we just avoid having that problem by using the universally accepted system of letting them participate in our european leagues.

also israel has a very good internet connection to western europe, it's probably better for them than for people from iceland, some regions of spain or portugal, russia, belarus, etc.

its just not as easy as nailing it all down to where exactly in the world a place is. you have to choose one way or the other when there is more than one option; and back in the days we opted to give Israelis access to the European tournaments and there isn't really a reason to change that. (nobody will be forced to play on Israeli servers in any game either.)

Now tell me why the top4 players of the UK EPS and the Benelux EPS which only have 8 players playing it (in the UK EPS 8 (!) players dropped) qualified for the qualifiers, while Germany has only the top 2 of the EPS qualified? Germany has actually the biggest EPS with 16 players who put some effort into it. Also we have an active played EAS. So overall we have more duel players but still we have fewer spots for the qualifications... kinda illogal, isn't it?

And please don't tell me there are only 2 qualified players from Germany due to the ENC fail. Those players who played in team Germany weren't either active neither they have anything to do with duel or the EPS (k1llsen and calipt are exceptions and they are qualified anyway).

I don't get shit... but it's pretty funny that QINOX is in that list considering he didn't even qualify for EPS (top 8).... He just got last (4th) at the EPS Benelux LAN finals because I didn't show up and they picked some random spectator to fill the spot :D

So I'm wondering why QINOX is there and not dem0n considering he had other plans at the same day as EPS LAN finals... QINOX never qualified for EPS, I took dem0n's place instead but wasn't able to go last minute so I guess QINOX just showed up and sat down to play :D

Also wondering if this tournament is 16+ .... Pretty sure there are a couple of players younger then this age.

Because ESL is using a tiered system, just like in football. If you haven't done well domestically you can't get to the international events.

because the system is the same for all games that we have, there are no special exceptions for any game.
the only reason it was different in the last season was because QL was a new game with no previous results in our competitions.

well, if those countries had separate eps leagues you'd have the same outcome.
if you take the uk/ie eps, split it in two...
then kronic would have probably won the ireland eps and garpy would have probably won the uk eps. they'd still get the same slots for this season according to the results of the previous season.

he was just previously too young to attend offline events in germany.

tdm is only included with a minor percentage, using points won there in the qualifier basically enabled some of the smaller countries to get into the nations ranking at all in order to have their own national qualifiers.

we use the same nations ranking based system in all games in the extreme masters. the first season was an exception because it was ... *drumroll* ... the first season. we just didnt have results from our own leagues yet to make a ranking at that point.

they had 2 players at the lan finals (zsx & garpy), 4 in total in the online group stage. so basically through strength in numbers they scored more points than some other nations who just had one representative (belgium, ireland, etc)

if it's a system created after the champions league system the number of points have to be divided by the number of players.
Same with a system that uses common sense, cause otherwise you just favor nations that already have more players.

Oh well, I guess it ESL's call to make a system they think is best. Just please don't try to sell it as common sense.

Germany had 2 players in the PLAYOFFS, which is alot more worth than some online groupstage. Still we have 2 slots while NL and UK has 4 slots because they had more people in the online european groupstage of the last IEM which had a different mappool and different players.

So the fact that k1llsen and calipt reached a higher stage than all of the other countries having an EPS don't have any revelance on the qualification system?

calipt QR1 - placed 7th in the IEM 4 European Championships

Maybe you should approach someone who is in charge for the decisions and stop ranting at an esl admin, who is known for his good work. I think he doesn't deserve something like that.

Ive been told by several admins burnedd was too young, so I didnt really care if I didnt beat him in EPS dudes.

I don't like the system for quake live either because there aren't enough quake eps. In addition I don't get it why tdm is relevant for dueling? That is just pure bullshit and proofs that the guy in charge is either a moron or doesn't have common sense :x. I know that esl wants a cl system but the current situation doesn't allow it imo.

You dont know all the parameters I guess so why are you saying that ? I didnt care hard enough, because when EPS season started none was aware of the LAN dates, and it happend the lan dates came at the weekend of my annual music festival which I went every year for the past 7 years so I had to make a choice between a possible 50� win from a 75� trip or just going to my music festival with my friends.

I made my decision and decided to drop and not play my usual 'game'. I came 4th and let my spot at lan to the 5th etc...

Nobody told me about the consequences of such a decision so I couldnt know.

You're implying this as if I knew the consequences before.
Besides I think sputnik is one of the admins who told me a few months back that burnedd would not be allowed. Might be wrong though, but I'm sure rondrian told me that.

Also if sputnik considers this system 'common sense' and I don't there's room for critics and I make sure these critics are heard no matter if the admin is a good admin or not, I know he's a good admin, thats not the point.

Well the system is what we have used since the first Extreme Masters, so after 5 years it is obviously common sense for me and everyone else involved with IEM.

It's all numbers, and I can understand that some people may disagree because they feel strongly about certain players or nationalities. But we can only go by the number and not by how much we like or not like players or nations.

uhm, do you know how the CL nations ranking works?

Step 1. The teams get points based on their performance.
Step 2. The points of all teams of one nations are added.
Step 3. The points of the nation are divided by the number of teams that added to them.

That means if all the teams of one nation are out after the first round their nation score is lower than that of a nation with just one team, that made it out of the group stage.

Seems a bit like ESL forgot about step 3 O.o

but the cl system only makes sense when you make the division.
Otherwise the countries that already have the most teams/players will keep getting the slots as long as they don't play much much worse.

A nation with 5 good players but only one single slot can be very happy if it can get past a country with 2 mediocre players but two slots.

Why would anyone want that?

my point was actually that poland get less spots than belarussia, I guess I didn't make that clear enough.

and I think it is obvious why belarus got all those spots: cypher won the tournament.

my problem with the current system is this:

With a normal system it should be possible to predict the rankings and spots based on results/numbers.
With this system, at least I can't. If someone is able to do that, please enlighten me.

The best I got so far is:

1. Having a lot of players in the tournament, gives a good chance to keep the spots regardless of performance of the players. - uk, nl (a bit weird)
2. Having a player finish very high gives you spots. - belraus (understandable)
3. Having players finish high and having many players in total gives you the most spots - sweden (as it should be?)

but what ranking will make 2 stronger than 1, as 5th-8th places in finals seem to be not enough by far? - italy, ger

Also I think you should do regional rankings rather than national rankings if you have regional EPS instead of national EPS. It's kind of dumb when kronic is in QR2 and garpy is in the main round when kronic placed higher than garpy in the same EPS, same with draven and burnedd.

This applies to the cups that we are running in-house (Iceland, Sweden, Lithuania and International). Some of the other qualifiers may have different pools because they used the maps from the European 1on1 ladder, but some also have the new proper one.

soo did you count jay & joe, seeing how they did take their part of euro and world finals? think you need to give uk at least 1 more slot based on that :D

oh and, in uefa champions league only teams that play football can increase their rating, and it's not about how many teams you have there but how much they win/lose that improves or downgrades the nation's rating.

using tdm as an influence on slots, even in smallest percentage is like if uefa would use basketball results for nation rating for champs league and european league.
