QL in NA isn't dead... IRC is dead.

Seems like the same thing for me. How do people communicate and get together to play at higher levels then? Apparently, they don't very much? To me the community is a huge part of FPS games. I like playing with all those weird characters and personalities you meet. All the FPS communities I've seen that had fun TDM/CTF communities had IRC channels were people gathered. People would end up playing games at the weirdest hours and usually 4-8 hours a day total.

You should try #quakelive @ quakenet and there is also a very secret invite channel where every single pro or decent player hangs and that is mostly how we arrange practise etc. You need to follow the white rabbit to find it though :o).

So if you've never seen the Matrix, it's impossible to find the room?

quakelive needs to implement irc into their website or something easy to get a community together and easier to communicate with

Well CTF has a slight pulse if you're lucky enough to live in the southeastern quadrant of the country but we're talking slight pulse :| TDM is dead and buried.. the only thing you ever see now is occasional 2v2 tournaments with nearly all teams just being some dueler+dueler combo for that tourney only. it sucks and its sad but its the reality :(

i wanted to play some 2v2 with a couple guys from MAR last weekend and it took nearly 30 mins to get a 4th person and the server set up. some of it was due to me not knowing what i was doing initially as i had only been spawning duel servers and finding a good location for everyone but that elusive 4th was what took the most time.

i guess the players that would be considered new blood for the TDM gametype, those that have a basic grasp of duel and DM and can time items, aren't interested in a gametype with team damage or running around without a weapon for 30 secs. it's a brutal, merciless gametype that exposes every flaw in DM skills. nothing worse than seeing a massive negative net and a lot of people don't even want to try when there's 7 other CA servers with 2 or 3 empty slots.

That's too bad but I feared such. 2v2 is OK but TDM/CTF were always what drove and made up the majority of the Quake community. Without that there isn't much point left for me anyways.

Unfortunately it's technically impossible to integrate IRC in QL :/

not really. a lot of them are still on gamesurge. no idea why.

to answer the "wheres the community?" question, they failed to move to irc based pickups. so its pretty dead. apart from a group of maybe 15 players who occasionally get a random pickup going through word of mouth. its an amazingly retarded pickup system.

I've been on QNET myself for years and years. I hang out in #idl mainly for ZDaemon CTF. I don't know why everyone else in NA didn't move to QNET. Seems like people were for a long time split up between ETG and GameSurge.

More than irc, what QL needs is a ladder. Pubs are fine for practice, probably better than irc pickups, but they kind of blow when there's nothing else.

I dunno, in smaller communities ladders never seem to do anything in the long run. The best players/teams get to the top pronto and that's that.
