I think it's ok to make people pay for being able to spawn servers (though the whole no-custom-server-concept is imo shit and hinders highly the ql community from growing).

But it's a completely foolish idea to restrict maps and modes to certain users. All it does is to split the community over different kind of servers, which will result in people giving up on ql, because they can't find a match that easily anymore.

Charging money for maps and modes that exist since years is a joke and makes id look pretty pathetic. For years they were the most prestigious game developers and now they even can't come up with own content?

Also, what kind of advertisement is that paying users are able to pass queues? Queues shouldn't even exist in the first place.

There's a reason why most subscription based services (even utility companies) bill you monthly.

Read the part where I said that every respectable company offering a subscription based service typically charges a monthly fee (the only notable exception being credit card companies). There are many good reasons for this but I wont discuss them here b/c this isnt finance class. When the companies do offer an annual fee it's usually just an optional discount of the monthly fee. The only reason behind forcing an annual fee for a service like QL would be to quickly recoup losses before abandoning said service altogether.

If QL dies, how many of the new players will spend $20 on Q3 to play it? You're not only going to lose almost ALL the new players, but I'm sure you'll even lose old players who have been holding on. All tourneys will go under, and even the loss of a single tourney has been enough to damage the community.

Main thing is server spawning. Let premium/pro spawn servers and any account join those servers, and the setup isn't so bad.

think: you see a 15/16 ffa server, and go to connect. it just started and you know the people are about your skill level. you click the big, red PLAY button, and guess what? A BIG ADVERTISEMENT! FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!! or you have to wait in queue for x amount of time... both of these are horrible ideas. imo they should be making sure the servers can handle a ton of people instead of just making the non-payers wait while the pro/premium people have all the fun.

the ingame billboards are there specifically for advertising. they could turn on ingame video and put the ad video on the damn billboards... that would be insanely cool, but instead they jew everyone over if they dont pay...

well the only thing about the server filling up is that if they are watching the video, they aren't getting in any faster than you unless they clicked connect first, so (hopefully) they could fix it to where the server listings would already call it full.

As far as video on billboards I doubt that too- they are distracting enough already and making video appear on them would just take up more cpu power & be even more distracting, imo.

As long as they don't go overboard with between game ads, no problems as far as I'm concerned. I watch an ad or two when I watch shows on the internet, so no biggie.

The game starts the ''awaiting game state'' thing while you are watching the advertisements. I don't feel like watching the ads delays joining the server too much, couple of seconds maybe.

nah it doesnt delay connecting much, but you still have to sit through 15 seconds of BS... even if you block the ad, you still have to. im sure theres a workaround somewhere but it wont be coming out for a while.

TDM = fucking nonexistent in quakelive, so its the same shit for cpma, but it would be way better if we got players since we have more features.

yes it is a shame that I haven't. As far as the tier 1's go, there was something in a Dev Blog I read yesterday on the QL forums (dated yesterday as well) that spoke about tier 1's and such. Perhaps the beginning of a fix to this very problem.

I'm not defending id by any means because they've done some stupid shit with their product in the name of "progress", but really everyone that makes this argument of the cost always talks like they expect it to stay free, forever. If Q3 was the answer, Q3 would be at the forefront right now, tournies, cups, community, pros, promotion, etc. If id had any hope in Q3 itself at this point they would be using it and not QL. If QL doesn't succeed I doubt there will be any Quake left to play at all.

Isn't there any way the Quake community can try to at least unify to keep Quake (in whatever form) alive, because its almost dead already. Q3 updates is the answer, not a Q3 clone with no options whatsoever to configure it as you chose. Various aspects of Q3 could have been updated, from the renderer to baseq3 netcode and released as a new point release. Premium is like the new Q3 with populated servers, and the free version of QL is like Q3 1.16. You know, where everybody who played noghost or couldn't figure out how to download a point release played.

Also, Shining Crossings in QL is way > q3wcp5 in Q3.

no probz. if you want a good offline demo player, check out wolfcam, or one of the other QLDP programs out there. there are a few (im sure there are dozens, if not, hundreds out there that havent been released), and the popular ones are the best.

You'll still be able to play SC2 that you bought this year, just not the expansion.

You can still play SC and D2, you don't need BW or LoD. In fact as far as I know you can still play the original WoW sans expansions.

Yes - they've addressed this. I'm not sure if you can still play with a friend who has the expansion (maybe it'll force you to play with only the units he can make), but the ladders will be segregated depending on which expansions you have installed.

QL (Sub) = 1 year
SC2 = Forever

It doesn't matter whether the initial part of the game is free or not.
SC2 = forever, but limited unless you buy addons periodically
QL = forever, but limited unless you buy subscription periodically

SC2 isn't limited, it'll just become redundant, you still have access to all your content.

QL you have to keep subscribing to keep content.

It's funny that people seem to think id owes them something. People aren't entitled to anything in the first place. The way business usually works is that when you see a product you evaluate whether you feel it's worth your money. If not, then don't buy it. Don't spend all day on forums whining over a 24$ price tag of something that's been free for two years and that you've spent ample time playing. At the end of the day the market will be the judge of whether it fails or not.

I'm not complaining about criticism in general, there should always be criticism when warranted. But whining over the one fact that they're charging for the product is a childish stance. The fact that most of the features are still free makes the whining even more ridiculous. I guess the exposure of the idiocy is a good thing.

I have a problem paying the price of a full game for what is Quake 3.3

But still, if you look at it, when Q3 was released, it wasn't complete. It took years and years for it to end up where it did, with a couple patches by id and the rest was done by the community with mods and maps, none of which were guaranteed to work correctly 100% of the time, over the span of 10 years though more like 5 as there haven't been many large scale advances in a long time.

I've complained a ton myself about QL in the past and, like others, suggested people to go back to Q3, but there isn't anyone left with the dedication or time to continually update the mod/gametype that I play so there really is no point. By buying a subscription, you've entered a contract with id wherein they now have to fulfill their promise with support and content updates or you walk away with your hard earned $3.99/month.

I understand 100% the wait and see argument, and if I were in a situation where I couldn't justify the money, I would do the same. But as far as the argument that id is doing whatever they want blah blah taking our money now blah blah, you couldn't be more wrong. They have combined the most popular (best would be too subjective) aspects of the most popular mods (minus promode gp of course) in less than 3 years, with the promise a further features/content updates and full support with paid subscriptions. That's pretty good for $3.99/month and as far as services go, I don't see one that can compete.

Isn’t all the advertising paying for this? This is kind of cold, was there even warning? My brother said he paid one time for quake 3, and the rest was history. If you actually pay $2 to $3 bucks a month yearly, that can really add up. I think we got suckered dude! School is about to start, so my playing time is limited anyway. It should have been a onetime $10 or $20 payment, and the rest is history.

the only warning was leaked info that got like 3 people banned. it wasnt a public notice from iD, so not everyone saw it. which is gay; when youre gonna make a fucking MASSIVE update, and introduce payed accounts, you should tell people.... weeks ahead of time, not 4 hours

It's pretty cool to spawn servers whenever you want, with anyone you want and not bothered by whiners/complainers/children/bigots/haters.

yknow... if they didnt have those 13 second ads before each game, and there was just normal/pro, and pro only had private servers, and everyone got all the maps/updates/goodness, and they actually fixed everything that needs fixing.... it would be worth it. having a private server would be awesome. it would be even better if you could make it public :D
