Depends on your needs, like with any device. You have to describe how you're going to use it, where, and how much you want to pay. Arrange your requirements by strength of preference, and it should be pretty easy to figure out.

i am due an upgrade in next few weeks. Have studied this, want HTC Legend but my network don't do it so Desire looks equally cool.

HTC Desire and Samsung Galaxy S i9000 should be on your agenda. Desire is smaller (3.7 inch AMOLED screen) and is easily pocketable. Since your knowledge about smartphones is pretty limited as per the OP, it's pretty evident that you wouldn't be rooting your phone with a custom ROM (XDA Developers ftw!). The response is very fluid due to the 1GHz Snapdragon processor and the AMOLED display is just gorgeous. Desire and Galaxy S are the best Android devices out there at the moment.

Galaxy S is a yummy device with a 4 inch SUPER AMOLED screen and has a locked bootloader which means, as of now you cannot root it. Both Desire and Galaxy S are due to receive the Android 2.2 (Froyo) update pretty soon. Look for the Stuff.tv review of the Galaxy S on youtube (plus the chick doing the review is mad sexy, which always helps :P)

The build quality of Galaxy S is a bit plastic'ish while HTC Desire is thick and feels sturdy in the hand. Both have a 5 Megapixel cam, but the Galaxy S has no flash compared to the single LED flash of the Desire. Galaxy S comes with out of the box Swype support. The video review demonstrates it pretty nicely.

In the end, it's all about your budget and preferences. Both are kickass devices. Galaxy S beat Nexus one in Linpack and GPU benchmarks and is running on the hummingbird 1GHz CPU.

I have the iPhone 4, never really had any issues as i always have good reception (even when touching the left ariel), but a friend of mine returned his because he had poor reception in his area and it made it alot worse.

Also, i bought a case of ebay for £3 so now i don't get any issues at all.

I also have iPhone 4, don't see anything like that, and I don't live in a particularly good coverage area. It has been said that shortening two antennas reduced the signal by 24db. Best signal is around -53db, phone functions perfectly at -113db, still. So there you go. In shitty coverage area of backwoods nowhere you can kill any phone depending on how you hold it, but iphone4 drop is bigger then most. On the other hand, if you don't touch it that way, the reception is better.

It appears to be outright broken, or at the very least an exceptionally bad example of antenna engeneering. Apple has announces a software patch to fix the antenna, i find that sorta lol.

But it wont hurt apple anyways. Their customers, a weird cult of zealots, will buy anything from them, regardless of functionality. I bet there will be long queues of them before the apple shops to buy their additional iPhone case.

It's not broken, nor badly engineered. It's not insulated, which doesn't have anything to do with the antenna itself, but the apple design fags.

The software "fix", which I do think is silly, is to make it not look like its going from good to nothing, but from bad to nothing, and if they do that, the effect looks the same as on many other cellphones when you block the antenna. Again, I don't have a problem, you have to be in a 'worse then 90db' area and have really sweaty paws to be able to 'break' it. So the antenna can be improved by a clearcoat, but it's NOT broken.

i hate apple but this stuff isnt as bad as it sounds.
lots of sites had a look on the signal strength raw data by now and the iphone 4 does only slightly worse than every other smartphone aswell. the intervals for the signal bars are really fucked up on the iphone though to make the connection always look perfect as long as it is somehow acceptable but that also means that once you lose bars, the signal is really fucked, and only then do you notice the effect everyone is talking about

Was the conclusion basically most of the time you should have 2 bars instead of 5?

Got HTC desire. Haven't looked at other phones since April (Galaxy S thing mentioned earlier I didn't look at for example), but the Desire is awesome. Very glad I didn't get an iPhone tbh,
