actually quake has been always about community content. Default quake games are not really good without custom mods, maps, etc. especially quake1 and 2 which also happen to be the most modified ones (in short: look at winquake [software] vs ezquake). This is the main source of why quake live is not as good of any of them considering all content available (besides quake4 because it never had a community in the first place and ofc its terrible).

If it wasn't for this you would be only playing duel and ffa in quake live, if it even existed. Ctf, rocket arena and tdm were created by the community; so are all the existing requests we want for qlive that existed in previous quakes like thousands (literally) of mods and maps.

The main problem with qlive is that id doesn't acknowledges this so there will never be more good content if they don't do so, and cmon if they deal with copyright issues they would have the inmediate copypaste source: quake3.

and I think you know even cs is a community-made mod. What I don't expect you to know is that indirectly it comes from a quake2 mod (same developing team using it as the main basis).

doesn't leave much of an experience to be had with no modifications of any kind. id wants to control every aspect of QL and thats their business, but they're shooting themselves in the foot expecting their community to just deal with the fact that for the forseeable future, there won't be any real updates, additions, mods, etc., especially after super-moddable previous installations of Quake.

The attitude I've seen is shit from the community. We've had perfectly good tournaments (MLG online 1v1 and 4v4 tournament) and the community decides to shit on it because they wanted to turn a profit.

But it was online...Why would people pay a premium for tournaments when there are several volunteer admins that would give back 100% of what was received? The gotfrag thing came off as this new big thing that would breed life into the NA community. The NA community understandably inferred that nice prizes would be given, but the only prizes that ended up being offered were a fraction of what the community paid for themselves. The reaction seemed justified.

It would be justified if there was something of equal or greater value, but there wasn't. We've seen one tournament since that event that offered money ($100 SG cup). If we were flooded with free tournaments with prizes, sure. But at the time, and even now, we don't have a lot.

EDIT: Also it was a business turning a profit. They gave decent prizes, and would of kept X amount of dollars. Personally, I don't see the problem with that.

I don't know why there aren't online cups running (daily/weekly) on the QL site (other than id's issues with actually DOING something with QL) for pub players (I'm thinking mostly of NA here). Hell I don't even think you'd have to offer some big ass prize to get people involved- I know I'd at least TRY (if I was so inclined) for like $50, a mousepad, headset, something decent but it doesn't have to be extravagant. Why not even get special deals/discounts from other websites/companies, which make good prizes and could double as advertising revenue?

Can't remember what he does, but I think he's in the oil trade (don't quote me on that though). For some reason though, he and his family are really into CS and he hosts SHIT loads of tournaments (guess it's about 2-4 large ones a month). Just recently finished a CS-female tournament and he's just about to do a European tournament with 16 of the top teams. The craziest part is, he doesn't make any money at all from any of these tournaments. Might even be making a loss out of it. He just does it for the love of the cs scene.

He's probably the best thing to happen to CS in a long time. If only Quake had some billionaire inject money into it...

Well I was joking originally, but I wouldn't stereotype CS players by slow play. It really depends on the match/map/team etc. Public servers sure, but then who the hell plays CS for public servers?!

Many of the top CS players at the moment play QuakeLive and plenty used to play Q3. Hell, I play Quake and CS and neither of them seem faster then the other. If anything, they feel the same speed to me.

Regarding speed though, CS is slower than QL which is in turn slower than CPM or Warsow, for any sentient being who understands the general notion of speed.
