In the second part of his 1on1 interview

Michal "Carmac" Blicharz answers questions about the goals he set about accomplishing upon joining ESL as the product manager of the Intel Extreme Masters.

Why does Carmac feel more emphasis was needed on the continental finals? What is significant about spacing out playoff games from those within the same round and the following one? Carmac reflects on his life as a soon to be 30 year old and the good things which have come from it and some perhaps missed opportunities. Carmac also talks briefly about season V of IEM and which games are likely to be featured.

The problem with quake live is that the way that maps are played doesn't really change. CS and SC both have maps that are played frequently yet strategies vary wildly each game (making them more interesting and giving the games the longevity factor)

Quake maps still have that element, just it's not as strong.

because the weapons/armor are given at the beggining of the round and you have a purpose aside killed the entire oposite team :D that makes tactics more dynamic as oposed to static weapon placements.

Pick three? If you're targeting the world (Which they are) then it's obviously SC2, SF4, and either WoW or CS.

I'm sure Carmac would vouch for QL, but this is a business. That would be an insane league if those games were picked, heh.

Although, kind of sad that we might not see QL in next years ESL.

afaik there seemed to have more interest on the quakelive finals at cebit than for cs (talking about the crowd, which was INSANE).

Now now since I didnt watch a single cs match since it's the most boring fps game ever I might be wrong and have missed the part where cs had a huge crowd for the finals....

you simply missed that part tbh.

i was at cebit on friday and the qlive matches in the afternoon were barely followed from people who were not in one of the teams - most of the people following were actually qlive players who competed in the earlier stages of the tournament.

the fact that there were that many people watching those matches on the stage was because of the cs matches before and after qlive.

well that might be because there was no real way to follow the games other than standing behind the players, which about as many people as there was space for (which wasn't much indeed) did.

well you could circle the whole booth area as all the players were basically watching the game. at those events people usually watch where they can sit down and follow the games. they do not really care about the content especially once lunch is done and the afternoon is coming. you can even show these fatality workshops and you see only a few people leave the scene because most are tired of walking or standing somewhere.

its not about the content if you only see a few people following the event in the audience at 10 am compared to 3 pm

well i was told quakelive has had more online viewers than cs had on the last iem season though.

But yeah, as I said, I did not waste my bandwitdh to watch a crappy game so I can't tell for sure :-)

if you target the world or better said the global esports markets you would go for wow, sc2, and cs 1.6 with no doubt.

qlive and sf4 boost interesting numbers but those 2 games should not be able to compete with the other 3 games as their overall following cannot compete with any of the 3 aforementioned games. both games would lose to starcraft broodwar in worldwide following.

That's kind of a simplified view, as there are a number of other factors to take into account.

Like how well a specific game is covered already by other leagues/events, i.e. how your competition looks like as an organizer. And what the cost/interest ratio would be. I'd expect for example QL duel to be a comparatively cheap game to organize.

So when making a business argument we should at least try to give a complete picture. That way, it'd become more obvious how much of these "predictions" are in fact mere speculation on our side.

i took all those factors in account as i know the organizers point of view very well. i removed all the personal preference and political arguments and based them on data (players/fanbase/interest in gaming hotspots).
