One i do remember is "The Orphan", i thought it was good and my dad loved it!

I've been watching lots of classics lately, Breakfast at tiffany's and Casablanca are actually really good films! Also apsolutely love La Dolce Vita, but might be too art house. (And long)

Casablanca and Citizen Kane are widely regarded as two of the greatest films ever.

Citizen Kane was ok. It's impressive that it was made in the 1930's, the story and the filming techniques were quite modern, but it was a bit long I think.

about the other one, dunno, i still have too see it.

hmm.. i found rec mostly boring until the last worthy ~20 minutes .. rec2 is more about action and less about suspense.. i definitely liked the descent more.. descent 2 is pretty much the same story as rec2 regarding the style.. you may also check dead end, tale of two sisters or orphanage regarding some 'newer' decent horrors

i hated the end of descent. i mean, 99% of the "newer" horror films never have a happy ending. its like a pattern nowadays. if i turned off the movie 5 minutes before the end if would be much better.

so descent 2 is also out.

yeah, descent2 is even worse example of what you just described.. :/ i understand that in horror genre as a whole its quite hard to keep the usual narrative with scaring the audience/building the suspense etc. without using some overdone/expected motives but bleak ends doesnt fit every horror movie just because its a horror movie.. prety okayish example was the mist i think.. its tough now to find some horrors that i would truly enjoy thanks to something original :/ trick'r'treat was pretty fun to watch though its not a 'pure' horror.. but refreshing nonetheless

the mist was fucking crazy. i remember sitting in the cinema with my gf and at the moment he shot everyone in the car, i just looked at her and KNEW what was gonna happen. brutal ending.

aw sorry mixed up the mist with the fog, the mist is the adaptation of the stephen king novel and the 2007 is the first movie to be made, yea I saw it, was pretty good, but imho in recent time orphanage (el orphanato) was the best horror movie.

orphanage is not really a horror horror movie, i mean...there's suspense and atmosphere but not that many scenes to scare you, maybe a couple. anyway its great.

Epic Fail

Red Dawn might be cheesy at parts, but still when are you going to see the Soviets invade the breadbasket? WOLVERINESSSSSSSSSS! The themes were good: loss of innocence, survival no matter the means, resistance, family. Also some of the cinematography was epic. The only fault the movie really has is that it was made in the 80s.

The Abyss. Can't even see how you would deny how awesome/thrilling that movie is (though the ending is hokey).

Speed Racer. No one watched this movie yet is was quite spot on capturing the mood/style of the original TV series and also it had some of the most fantastic editing/visuals in any movie.

I just don't get how you can prefer the studio cut over Cameron's :P

Tim Burton's Batman was much, much better. The new Batman isn't a real hero. He has no flaws, he's inhumanly strong, courageous, smart, rich, etc. That's no hero. That's a demi-god.

But Tim Burton's Batman, now that was a hero. He has flaws, like a tragic hero should be (giving up part of what makes him human in return to fight crime). Michael Keaton nailed the part too... detached from reality, unable to do well in social situations, and almost cold/inhuman personality. He was exactly how a man whose parents were killed in front of him and dresses up as a bat to fight crime at night would be if he was a real man -- disturbed.

Christian Bale's Batman sucks primarily because his character is written as a perfect person with no flaws. He's a playboy billionaire by day, drives crazy fast cars, does whatever he wants. He lives the dream life. And then at night he kicks everyone's ass. It's boring, uninteresting, and could be written by anyone. The movies/stories that have these kind of characters are purely visceral entertainment -- just like Michael Bay-plosion.

I think the problem is with Christian Bale himself, more than how the film is written. He just always seems so detached somehow? He is a good actor and his performances are good, but I find it hard to care about the characters he portrays.

He is a good actor. Some of his recent performances have been amazing (Rescue Dawn, The Machinist). But I think it's more that Batman Begins and Dark Knight are HUGE franchise movies with tons of money behind them. The more money that gets put behind them, the more pedestrian the studio wants the movie to be.

Look at Michael Bay-plosion. All his movies are about as pedestrian as they come. Simple story but lots of action/special effects, extremely well-polished (visually/editing), great set-design, etc.

Tim Burton's Batman was essentially the start of the Batman franchise for movies. So Tim Burton was afforded a lot more creative room to do any story he wanted within the Batman universe.

It's just the way Hollywood is these days. Probably the last movie with a huge budget that wasn't mainstream was The Watchmen and since that didn't go off well... I doubt we'll see any studios taking any more chances on stuff that doesn't appeal to the PG13+, lowest-common-denominator of movie-goers.

No, I feel that way about his performances in rescue dawn and the machinist too. Everything Christian Bale is in, his performance is engrossing to me but somehow I feel I don't care about what happens to him?

PG13 is just a fucking disaster. Films have just gotten worse and worse. The Dark Knight Returns, in one way at least, is a master class. In how to get as much violence and nihilism on screen without getting a 15 certificate. Scenes like that one with the pencil trick are genius. But it is just trickery to get around the censors, rather than actually making the film I think they actually would like to make? Just sucks.

You can't hate the Wachowskis for the Matrix sequels -- it basically didn't belong to them (creatively speaking) after Matrix 1 was such a huge hit. They created a monster of a franchise... do you think Warner Brothers would allow them any room to make a mistake on the film?? Especially if Warner Bros was going to drop $300million on Reload/Revolutions combined? Like with any franchise, the bigger it gets... the more pedestrian it gets. That's the way Hollywood is.

Second, V for Vendetta was awesome and Speed Racer kicked serious ass. Just give the movie an honest chance and you'll see what I mean.

I didn't read the graphic novel for V for Vendetta (by Alan Moore) but I'm assuming the Wachoski Brothers were simply going along with the novel and not "trying" to do anything to the story that wasn't from the novel. I thought it was great. Hugo Weaving was fucken spectacular (as usual), Natalie Portman did well, the overall ode to Orwell's 1984 (did I mention Alan Moore wrote V for Vendetta? -- the creative genius behind The Watchmen and From Hell) was nice since it's rarely done well (like with the poor but curiously popular movie Equilibrium), and not often do we see heroes in movies who are cultured/sophisticated/mannerful but as blood thirsty in a Count of Monte Cristo-kinda way like V was in the movie.

I don't think you read my comments above about the Matrix sequels. I really, really doubt the Wachowski Brothers had nearly the creative leeway (afforded to them by the studio) to write the Matrix sequels as they did for the original Matrix. There was sooo much there that could've have made for an epic final movies to end the franchise, but in the end it was only about the action scenes for the studio and not having any strange/mind-blowing ending that would've turned off lowest-common-denominator type moviegoers (like with Vanilla Sky's laughably self-pwning cinematic train-wreck of an ending).

You haven't posted a list of movies you'd recommend... If you did, though, I bet you'd go with some safe movies that you know everyone would agree with you on.

i just found v for vendetta really boring. Maybe i was looking for the Wachowski to redeem themselves after counting the days until the sequels came out. Watchmen is 10 million times better than the stupid messages that V tries to force down your throat.

I was bitterly disappointed with the sequels as you can probably guess. I think they had full reign on the project and weren't told at all what to do with the ideas they had. People went and saw it but i don't think the Wachowskis has the mental capacity to envisage what so many fans had in there heads. So ultimately they disappointed a vast majority of the die hard fans.

I used to post over at matrixfans.net and was quite a forum hawk. The moment the equals were released i stopped. :(

Matrix 4 will be made eventually and i hope they explain the massive plot holes in the story or write themselves out of the disjointed mess. Can they tho? I doubt it. They destroyed the franchise by as you say going too big :(((

On a related note, where do you guys get your movies? On other related notes, why does no encrypted p2p system exist yet? Are the companies slowly winning or losing the case on digital copies? I can't tell.

edonkey still rocks for movies / music, especially for old stuff
torrent is good for tv show and new stuff
download websites are good too (megaupload, rapidshare etc etc)

I use torrents and forums with rapidshare/megaupload links. I also buy the DVD when the movie is good.

If you want really obscure / rare / underground and other b-movie shit try to get an invite to Karagarga or Cinemageddon. Most mainstream & cult classics can be found on piratebay/isohunt and some are available on rapidshare and other upload services.

just piratebay / btjunkie / torrenthound. or if you're lucky to have an invite for IPT or TL, even better.

but some weird titles are hard to find, especially if they are non-american

USENET used to be the best for rare movies. No idea now since I changed ISP and lost access to a decent free news server.

usenet is also the best if you want to be on the save side I hear, provided that your hoster does not log. so your isp being your usenet host does not work.

anyways, I'm poor, but still I'm thinking about some kind of anonymity service, because this can't be happening to me, this is pissing me off. Is downloading even illegal? I always thought you are safe as long as you don't upload anything ever.

It is illegal, so we are all 'commiting crimes'. You could be prosecuted in theory but in practice the odds are in your favor if you don't massively seed or upload stuff.

Also Super Troopers for movie that can always make me laugh.

okay yesterday I saw "how to train your dragon" and I already think this is going to be the best animated film of year 2010, see it when you get a chance.

A few films i'd recommend. Not trying to be "arty" or "mainstream". Just films i like. I find watching films really boring if i don't go the cinema i can't watch one all the way through

Avatar - Should have cleaned up at the Oscars. Hurt locker is shit.

Martyrs - put me off this torture porn genre for good. really powerful. Anything by the guy that makes it is pretty crazy French horror

Harry Brown - damn scary in places. Probably because its uk and close to home.

REC 2 wasn't bad. first one was more scary.
