I thought the 64 version was criticized heavily back in the day for being a bad port, do I remember wrong?

I read it was criticised for not being the original, which is kind of retarded. It is a bit unstable, crashed once for me in 20 runs and 3h playing, but not that serious. If you liked doom single player you should check it out!

found it: leave options->mouse: mlook on and go to options->control panel->input->disable y-axis.

I played with mlook because it felt more natural, also aiming is more fun that way. Downside is, of course, you can look at sprites from an 90 degree angle from above which makes them look silly, but you can try to avoid doing that :)

that one i linked is generally considered the best n64 conversion, but make sure you try them all and see which one you like.

I remember playing some doom2 total conversions after I finished the game, but one thing annoyed me, most of them where only half done. There is nothing worse then playing a game that is half done (except QL of course).

Can someone recommend me some MOD's or TC's that are well worth playing?

Well I'm instantly in love.

I downloaded Doom64 EX, and got the .z64 ROM file, and played through the first and part of the second level.

This is actually awesome. I might like it more than the original doom. The darkness, levels, and music remind me of Doom 3, which is scary. I never found Doom 1 scary, because of the midi music (I turned it off anyways) and brightness of the levels. Doom2 was a bit scarier, not that much though.

But this? This is fucking AWESOME.

You just need proper soundfonts to make midi music worth listening to.

After all these years this is nice to listen to.

for some reason it reminded me of the legacy of kain series music, especially the soul reaver ones.

I was lucky to own a soundcard with good midi when doom2 and ultimate doom came out. The brightness has to be set on darkest of course.

The lighting in d64 is way better, adds plenty to the atmosphere. I also like the new sprites, I expected much worse. I see d64 as an homage to the original, in that way it went beyond my expectations.

Looks like the hidden wolfenstein level in doom2.

I played through both wolf3d and spear of destiny, but after that I did not have the desire to touch the game again, with no map and the same kind of secrets through the whole game it's too tedious.

Little update:

There are two ports of the game available:

Doom64 - the absoulution, which has a smoother framerate, many options, but no multiplayer
Doom 64 EX, which is closer to the original, with multiplayer!, but less options and less smooth


I played through the absolution on 'I own doom' and it was manageable. The game is a total blast! The atmosphere is much creepier that that of the original. Well I almost played through the game. It turns out that you NEED to find the secrets to upgrade the laser gun to the max, else you can't kill the final boss :/ kinda meh, that's something I don't appreciate, dead ends in games... but that way at least I have a reason to play through it again xD

I'm surprised how gritty and dark the atmosphere is. I mean, Doom had it too, but it retained a somewhat "this is not real" touch to it, keeping the player both on his toes, somewhat scared for his character's life, and having tons of fun.

This game clearly aims to just frighten the fuck out of it's players, though. It's much more visceral. I'd say it's closer to Quake 1 than it is to Doom, actually, and the ominous dark ambient music adds tons to the feel as well. Be that a good thing or not, this game is hella fun, though. I can appreciate it's makers craving to build a creation of their own on the foundations of the originals, and respect the outcome.

How many times did we see shitty, dumbed down ports or half-assed remakes? This is a homage, and a very good one at that.

Yeah I felt the same, Doom2 was close regarding the tense athmosphere but doom64 is way scarier.

There were many situations where I was really amazed with what they did with the 3d engine, like the architecture or the scripted scenes.

I gott really hooked on old id games again, I'm playing hexen atm with a new engine port, hi-res textures and sound. Makes those idtech1 games young again :D

I think what makes Doom 64 this good, really, is that, while it does stray off in the feel and atmosphere department, it strictly adheres to the basic Doom gameplay. Nothing cute, just straightforward monster massacre with the weapons you know and love, albeit, in this case, in slightly unfamiliar surroundings.

When i think about it, there is no other game that i come back to so often and so eagerly. I can't even count the times i casually made runs through vanilla Doom, Doom 2 and Final Doom levels. It's just so god damn fun to play this game! I can't honestly recall any other shooter that holds this much singe player appeal, while operating with so little, and such basic, elements.

Hell, with the spark now rekindled with Doom 64, i'm off to hunt down all the awesome custom maps and megawads that came out along the years (and, amazingly, still do come out!).

Oh, this is fucking brilliant! Can't believe there is still an active online community for Doom.

While skulltag is more developed, and has a lot of neat features, ZDaemon has a bigger community.

The only really big difference is that ZDaemon keeps the game as traditional to the original as possible, while skulltag has freelook/jumping/crouching/new weapons/etc..

edit: Skulltag does have support for heretic/hexen/strife, though - even in multiplayer

Can you recommend any total conversions or level WADs? Something that stood out for you?

I haven't played a lot through, but i can safely recommend Hell Revealed and Kama Sutra. Be warned though, they are *very* hard.

Other megawads worth their mention would be 10 Sectors, Memento Mori and Requiem. Fun times, all of them.

As for total conversions, i haven't played any, really. According to the reviews, Batman Doom and Action Doom are the ones to check out, though.

Miscellanea - if you have some spare time and some room in your head for random insanity, play The Sky May Be, with the DeHackED patch. It may well be the most demented, incomprehensible map ever made. :D

I plan to spend the next few days scouring the internet for good Doom material, if i find anything more, i'll be sure to post it here.

For multiplayer, I recommend TNTBLOOD.WAD and TNTGRVNC.WAD from here, and UDMX.WAD from here.

This game was cool because if you didn't beat all the hidden levels, the last level of the game would completely and totally fuck you over. I played this on N64 and got all the way to the last level then had to beat the entire fucking game over again because if you don't have the fully upgraded flesh laser, beating that last level is nearly fucking impossible.

tell me about it. with every other game I would have been very annoyed but it's doom so...it's not a bug, it's a feature! They are motivating me to play through again (well technically I didn't the first time but shhh) and find ALL secrets!

That's a bit far fetched for my taste, I mean the riffs are in no way blatant copies, they are not even that close, more like some songs might have inspired the doom music. So who cares. Everyone's loving it for the whole experience, not the music as stand-alone.

Furthermore there are some unused doom songs that were modified so the copy was not that evident.

I'm at level 9 Outpost Omega where I have to push some buttons and I have to save almost every move, because the map is made so any 0.01 wrong angle doesn't let you run from one block to another, just for the sake of "difficult moves" which is kinda retard

I wanna play it with good old left/right no strafe keys, for the sake of old times
now I'm level 18 19 or smth, and at the exit there are 6 demons spawning out (barons of hell I guess), you have to dodge their fireballs on those platforms, not fall in the lava and meanwhile to dodge the arrows coming from the wall, and kill the beasts of course
after dying 40 or 50 times I decide to iddqd just out of curiosity to see if after killing the monsters I can go to exit, and I can, so it seeems there is no other trick there
now good luck playing that part, using the standard 1994 input only, ah with laggy keys btw (it seems the game can't read more than 2 keys at once)

though the whole movie is kinda fun, it stays there, from a critical point of view I admit the movie is sh1t, missing its mission by a mile
*weaknesses: the story, the environment, the angles, the way they put things together
it seems that whoever thought about the marines in this movie stole the idea from Predator only Predator doesn't contain any form of rasism; and the whole rhytm of the movie is strange at the best
minuses:
-the cliche "$5 says this shit ain't nothing but a disgrunted employee with a gun", when they have seen in the short video before, that something strange is going on (no gunshots and stuff)
-most of the conversations involving Samantha (Reaper's sister) are pure shit -what does the extra chromosome do? -superpower, superintelligent, supercock strength etc etc
-the marines, they are not relaxed when they just stand doing nothing, maybe because actors tried too much to act like soldiers or the director was putting too much emphasis on the detail that being a soldier must be some kind of tough heroic "be different" miracle, so the actors feelled the pressure and as a result they acted bad, or maybe the presence of the SAS instructor was at fault or all together
-the walking the corridor quests, the creators wanted to do here something a la develop-smart-corridors-stories from alien-aliens, with a lot of tension and monsters running the corridors through the dark, all compacted in a very logical way things out to happen, yet it is so fucked up you have to watch the movie at least a few times to understand the paths the marines are following; if you pay attention the corridors had a story of their own -they go there, find the clue, go back, find another clue, someone get scared once, other one get scared, second attempt to scare, someone falls in the water, someone falls down in the prison cell, too the same, too alert and too hurry in the end when they clean the sectors by killing everyone who could be infected
-the doubtfull love story between Samantha and Duke, smart conversations all the way there lol, the creators of the movie wanted to show that soldiers are humans after all, oh the sentimentality of the stupid in this soup called "deepening the story", mission accomplished not, it worked like shit -very realistical too, yeah, who would a scientist women wanna fuck if not a stupid ass nigga marine, lol: "and this is not the only big thing I have" lolz0R I used to impress girls like this when I was 6; every time I watch the movie I wish the actor playing the Duke never existed
-Carl Urban is not a number one actor imo, too, somehow I have the impression he is a Harrisson Ford wannabe
-too much artificial tension, the whole movie, put on screen through Sarge's acting; the way the actor understood the role of the Sarge, so he played that way is pretty stupid; I understand that he gotta be a tough ass marine sarge, but the way the actor plays doesn't fit -consider the old marine from Avatar, as counter-example; the Sarge walks the whole movie like he has something up his ass; or maybe it's about actor's charisma I find it hard to cope with, dunno fact is I don't like it at all, it doesn't even stand to Arnold Schwarzennegger standards from Predator, may it be acting, physical appearance or what not -or maybe it was just because Schwarzennegger used to smoke havanas in that movie, giving him a tough mother fucker image
--"in one of the carbon dating labs, there was an internal phone left off the hook" -"did you get any information from it?" at this point the guy with the tape, who was waiting all this time (!) for the sarge to ask it (lololol!) is starting to run the tape -silly; then sarge is saying: "open the door"; and when Samantha is opening the door I could swear the marines just woke up from a nap -they are all unrealistically relaxed; then the door opens and Portmann enters the corridor. at the moment he is doing that, he automatically looks at the detector, not forward! I mean how many marines does look on the scanner when they enter a corridor, without using their EYES first?
-Reaper looks at the monitor and exclaims: she's got 24 pairs of chromosomes; his sister responds: humans only have 23. NO SHIT SAMANTHA? his brother was good enough to observe what the display showed him but his sister was in need of playing captain obvious? then she continued, pointing at the skeleton they found when they reopened the dig: her cells divide 50 times faster; the skeleton's DEAD cells divide 50 times faster? well that's remarkable!

and I could go and on and on why the movie was a fiaso
