TEK-9.org launched their new monthly QuakeLive top ten ranking today, voted by TEK9's expert panel and the world's top players every month. With no sanctioned tournaments, no spam and no fees, the TEK9 top ten simply brings you the views and votes from the people you want to hear from each and every month.

Shane "rapha" Hendrixson has been on top for some time now but can he hold off the challenge of Europe's best after a shock defeat at the IEM American Championship? The biggest names in QuakeLive share their thoughts on who's the real favourite ahead of the global finals. Next month their votes will be joined by those of the previous top ten players, giving a clear and balanced ranking each time around.

It's not actually as ridiculous as it sounds.

I presume this isn't going to be used for tournament seeding, which itself would be ridiculous, so the players have no reason to in particular to lie and you just don't allow them to include themselves.

Happens all the time in other sports for end of year awards etc.

I don't think it's that ridiculous, and furthermore why is it that my suggestion has to be applied to a larger scale ("every sports team") for it to be a valid point...

You're good at what you do, but are you anymore qualified or credible than they are? As noctis has suggested, you could just ask them to make a top 10 excluding themselves. These rankings would then have more value in my eyes.

There's a story that at the first World Series of Poker in 1970 the players were each asked to vote for who would be crowned the world champion. Naturally they all voted for themselves, so instead they were asked to vote for whom they considered the second best player... and thus Johnny Moss became the first WSOP champion.

I mostly agree with the ranking, however I would say stermy over fox, and possibly rapha over cypher, but those two are about the same at the moment I think.

Quality of players. A lot of the top guys stop playing between tournaments to keep their sanity. Rapha wasn't going to any tournaments so he decided to take a break. (I assume)

He will probably begin playing loads again and be in shape for finals. He has the right amount of experience and looks like he has the talent not only to get to the final rounds, but win them too.

I have looked at his match history a few days ago, and yes he has been playing a lot with Zero4, which can only be beneficial for both of them. The skill difference seems quite large looking at scores though.

Nah dude, Cypher over Rapha. The rankings they posted are pretty spot on. I don't think you can argue.
The only thing is, "if" Cooller didn't be so overly kind to Av3k in Cologne, it would most probably be:-

Another thing is, "Dahang". I think its maybe a tad unfair to rank him 5th. I think Dahang is stronger than this, although there's no recent match ups to prove it. I'd still go with the rankings suggested but wouldn't be at all suprised if Dahang was a couple of places higher come the world finals.
My own opinion would be:-

Cypher
Cooller
Dahang
Rapha
Av3k

Av3ks hard to place because he's abit up and down. When he's up he "could" beat anyone.
The world finals are going to be awesome! For the first time in as long as I can remember that "all" of the best players are going to make it and play. Throughout Quake 3 there always seemed to be at least one player that didn't make it to the tounrey for whatever reason.

It's hard to predict the americans right now, but I guess rapha and dahang are among av3k/cypher and cooller. Since Av3k, cypher and Cooller can beat eachother anyday the same goes for the americans.
Hannover will be very hot if everyone arrives in good shape and health.

I don't understand why ~~the americans~~ people still give rapha the edge though, as good as we all know he is.

They give quakecon as an example, but had quakecon happend in january, you would have had another set of good players, and I doubt the finals would've been as 'easy' as it has been.

Same for gamescom, not every good (eastern?) players were there.
Before now, top4's looked like rapha, noctis, spartie, fox. Now they look like cypher, av3k, cooller, strenx, rapha, dahang... see what I mean ?

Also strenx his great performances at IEM should grant him a better placing imo. He came 4th of IEM behind the eastern trio, only to lose in a 5-mapper.

Other than that it all falls into giving opinions. So I think these ratings are pretty fair and the post was a very good read, thanks tek9 !

Basically because you don't base rankings off 1 result. Rapha has won everything that he has taken part in apart from coming second in the last tournament. Someone doesn't immediately drop 5 places in rank because of that.

The same applies to Strenx, if he won the last tourny, should he have been made number 1? In the same argument, should he be number 4?

Also, whether the games are close or whether it is a 5 mapper should not matter, only victories should count.

I think we will see at finals whether the rankings were bad or not, but I predict the results will be similar (although not the same) as this ranking.

rankings should be made so that they represent the actual level of play right now, not of all times. And that is actually what they were saying. Afaik this ranking isnt that much 'best ql player of all times', atleast if you read carefuly what the voters say.

Yes Brazil won a lot of football world cups, but today's rankings say Spain is the best football nation.

Yes, but Spain did not just win 1 game to become the number 1 team. Their ranking is a measurement of their average wins and losses over an extended time period. If they go out in the group stages in the World cup, they will not suddenly drop 10 places in rank.

rankings represent your average performance, no one can be on fire all the time so we have rankings to place you by your recent performence.

they always say "fighter is only good as his last fight" but in context with rankings the good fighters usually deliver, and if some fail, you shouldnt just drop them to the end of the list, they will prolly get back on sooner or later. (as long as they maintain activity, if you want online example)

I don't think that would work quite as well honestly.

I mean AFAIK not all pro players even watch many matches of other players, and there's always going to be a little bias to the people they've played or the players who have beaten them.

They would still offer more expertise than these guys, since they generally all play against each other fairly regularly and I'd expect they do actually see the majority of the LAN games (Since somehow I doubt these media guys are watching every online cup demo anyway).

How can you call being 2nd player of North America a disappointment? He lost 2:3 in the final game versus dahang what is not bad. This could be disappointment if he didn't pass the group stage but this is abuse to mark someone with a dissapointment when he finishes 2nd after being 1st 1st 1st 1st. I can agree that he was expected to place 1st once again, but he's not so far from that as it was presented in article.

I definitely agree with this. Especially considering rapha went up 2-0 against dahang and, from a spectator's point of view, it was looking a great deal like the American IEM final was gonna be a three mapper.

edit: there wouldve been a point to it if they did something like espn does for player of the month etc for the nba, along with highlights and shit. but just putting up a subjecting ranking is completely utterly pointless. Because some tournaments are different. 1st at a regional qualifier doesn't mean at a worldwide tournament. Since there is that difference, there must be a human calculation, because the tournaments need to be judged fairly. So, we need a staff in order to fairly calculate the data. An experienced staff.

Your entire argument here is focused around their experience, all of which is media related and not player related. They are totally different experiences that just happen to be involved in the same scene.

But because they are paid for media services within the e-sports industry that gives them some kind of credibility and authority to judge and rank the best players in the world?

I'm afraid not, the only things with credibility and authority is simply either looking at the tournaments and thinking for yourself or the players attending and participating in the tournaments opinion.

They fully deserve to be discredited here. Just as I would if I posted a Major News post linking to external site where I create a top ten.

I played Quake 2 from 2000-2007, Quake 3 and CPM after for about 9 months, and then Quake Live since. Around 2002, I was the organizer, leader and strat caller for a national USA Q2CTF team. Our major league (OGL, sigh) was dead and we had no leagues left, while ClanBase still had 40-50 Q2CTF teams, so I formed an all-star cast of players to compete in CB. We were the first American team to ever compete in a ClanBase league, and then a little while later I was writing match reports, and then after that became the Q2CTF Cup head. That was my first physical interaction with eSports if you can call it that, besides reading Cached, ShackES and XSR daily

Lists and statistics like these are something I�ve been missing from the Quake broadcasts.

When I�m watching Starcraft there is these Kespa rankings (I think) when players, commentators and other esport hangarounds are ranking the players not just in a list like this but also by individual points for different sorts of manuevers.. like macro, micro and so on.

I would love to see these kinds of stats for quake players in the ESL streams.. I�ll give one example (made up stats and numbers)
