I was able to play in 800x600 with Windows XP with the black bars. However, after switching to Windows 7 it is impossible to get those black bars, so I'm forced to play 1680x1050. If I choose another resolution than the native one, I get black bars everywhere around the picture, even top and bottom.
I hate ATI for that and consider buying Nvidia.

Anyone knows whether Nvidia can do GPU scaling on W7 properly (with the black bars)?

do you have the same problem in cpma? or does cpma work fine for you aswell?

Counter to QL, the scaling works in Q3. However, I won't get 120hz in any other non-native resolution, so I'm stuck to native res to get 120hz.

You won't believe what I just found out. I installed the 8.11 Catalyst for Vista x64, just to see what happens. THE IMAGE SCALING WORKS PERFECTLY. There are a couple of issues with the preview graphics within the driver menu, but every listed there works. Good job messing up image scaling that once worked well, ATI.

Now, only the problem with the refresh rate remains, as there's still no option to force 120hz, like there was in the XP driver (I tried the latest ATI Tray Tools as well, still no luck). I read something about removing a pin from the DVI cable in order to control refresh rates... Does anyone have experience with that?

i played with 16:10 for 2 months now because i was forced to do so, so it's not like i didn't try. i even adjusted m_pitch by multiplying it with 1.2 to counter the sudden change of aspect ratio. when i installed XP again yesterday (dual booting) and fired up QL in 4:3, i could feel a very positive difference immediately. i don't know why exactly, i guess i'm just too used to 4:3.

The only benefit with widescreen is less distorted view but if you're used to distorted view then why change? You can see just as much in 4:3 as you can in 16:10 since cg_fov is independent from resolution.

i prefer 4:3 aswell. i think id should use some stuff from cnq3 since the settings actually work fine there.

and voilà, i have bars on the side." i guess u are using cnq3 1.45 with r_mode 1, which is basically r_mode -1 on old cnq3/quake 3 exe, and should be the same in QL. Also cnq3 1.45 renamed r_customwidth to r_width and r_customheight to r_height.
