Although the game seems very good, i had to quit after 1 hour. Got sick about its fixed "field of view".(theres no console to change stuff)

I played COD4 + 5 for many months, but im sure im not going to play MW2 again.

It's stuck at FOV 65, which makes it unplayable for many (including me).

Ordered it over cdwow. Guess i will get it in a week or two. It sucks that there are no dedicated servers, but actually the best part about MW is the singleplayer and the mp I´ve only played at lans. So it doesnt really matter for me this whole discussion. BUT... it is of course alarming that console "features" like this are coming to the PC.

I'd say for most things, the console "approach" is better.

The lack of dedicated servers and usage of one of the players as a host is the major problem. I like the QL approach where id "provide" the hosting of servers but the system is essentially closed but obviously it's not as economical as the console approach.

Privately run dedicated servers are far superior to the console approach. Being able to set map cycles, set up the servers a lot more locations than the game creator can, using mods to get features needed for competition, high player count and the list goes on. It is also hard to build communities around servers that are provided as is, by the game creator. A lot of players start out on a random server in their country, which is tied to a web-site. After a while they go the website and become part of the community that posts on the forums etc. and they might even become part of the competitive community.

Even though we are than more 18 months into the beta, id has still not been able to provide decent Scandinavian servers, which highlights part of the problem with the game creator holding all the string as to where and how you can get your multiplayer servers.

Also IW shamelessly used features that mods pioneered in COD 4 and called them "stuff that we had thought about in the office," instead of giving credit to the mod makers. Wonder how they will get their new features for the next COD, now that they have no one to invent them for them.

I believe I said dedicated servers were superior to the console approach of user hosts. ids system has the potential to be vastly superior to the cluster fuck that most games with dedicated servers turn into (they just won't ever manage it).

Currently an ISP/Server provider can offer free hosting to id I believe, that's how Russia got it's servers I think.

A good idea is a good idea, if mod developers want to make a profit off of their ideas (most of which are rarely original anyway...) then they shouldn't make a mod with them in.

Got it yesterday and I'm hooked. IWnet works a lot better than expected. You can get a match within 10 seconds every single time.

Yeah I got it and I think for the most part the PC users reactions have been overreactions. The PC gaming industry is dieing and game developers have to make changes to make the games easier to setup and play like consoles. Having the game run through steam is a good idea because it keeps the game patched automatically as we all know can be a pain in the ass.

Try enabling your lagometer on a 4 bar server and prepare to be chocked.

The antilag measures in the game is MASSIVE. hitboxes r screwed.

No its not. They did some testing and if 1 guy lags on the server, everyone will.

As for removing lean... Lean is a feature that has always been in the cod series, it worked great in vcod (despite of the left lean glitch) and cod2. So why remove it? - Because they know p2p sucks for FPS gaming.

MW2 isn't CoD/2, maybe they just felt the game was better without it? or perhaps they felt removing lean simplified the control system and has nothing to do with netcode?

The host has 0 ping advantage, the rest are lucky if they have 40ms while half the players on the server will have bad playing conditions. They only show bars, cause they know how bad the ping is. There are 4 bars, and 3 is minimum for somewhat decent hit detection. With 4 bars you hit quite well, 3 bars there is some randomness, 2 bars and lower you lag while moving. If you are the host you will get accurate hit detection every time (only way to tell if you are the host is if you are the first one in the server).

Edit: It is not fully P2P since the host runs a listen server. Was one game where I was shooting someone and the host migrated during the firefight. The host switch took about 10 seconds and there was a small time delay after that, before the match resumed.

Sounds like the p2p element is only there in order to switch hosts.

Lean was one of the most used features as it allowed you to lean around corners and shoot instead of standing completely out in the open. Very useful when taking out campers who were watching a hallway or for peaking out to look for snipers. Now you have to fully expose yourself, which gives the advantage to people lying prone and camping a hallway etc. Taking out lean could probably be compared to taking out crouch from Counter-Strike.

I think it's their fault mostly. Back in the day, there was a standard for these kind of things. Look at CS, COD1, COD2, etc. They were amazing AND competitive out of the box. Back then, developers used to make the games skillful, challenging for everyone. Now, their too busy worrying about their movie script storyline, and who's going to do the voice acting. Hell, TF2 was even good when it came out for 6v6.

That's why people (like myself) get pissed off when shit like this happens. It's sad.

The focus was the same since COD1. Unfortunately, they're just making games easier since devs are unskilled shitties.

The focus is indeed the same, but developers have a new primary market now (Consoles with game pads) which limits what they can do already (lack of buttons, less control) and they have also got a lot better at making games a "cinematic" experience (Because most developers don't want to be making games, they want to be making films) which was always the focus for games such as CoD.

I think the whine and rage that's coming out over this is incredibly illogical, childish and ignorant. It seems a whole chunk of the gaming community thinks that the developers have done this simply to piss them off.

That's the problem though, old games were made with the target of gameplay. Making the game difficult, making it challenging, but having the controls work flawless, etc. Remember Megaman? Very popular, but hard as hell. You beat Megaman and bragged about it because of how difficult it was. You felt accomplished because Megaman was an extremely hard game. You tried many many times to beat it, and when you did you felt good.

Games now are the COMPLETE opposite. You beat a game to finish a story, not to feel accomplished in terms of gameplay and achieving something. It's just a play-along movie.

People need to learn to pick and choose the games they buy and play more wisely, then they won't get worked up and pissed off over stuff like MW2.

I never bought it, so I'm not pissed off really. I'm just upset that these developers forgot their roots, and are only making games easier nowadays.

Agree. I don't know if MW2 will be a competitive game, and to be honest, I don't really care. I'm loving the game at the moment, and I'm just playing on public, or with some friends while we're on teamspeak. Not every game has to be the next Q3/CS/WC3/etc.

I finished the single player today. Phew, I can free up 11 GB now.

just finished the sp campaign and it was one of the best single player fps experiences i had, awesome!
but still, for me it the question was 60bucks for 6/7h? that just sucks.would have bought it with a fair prize structure. imho a good way would have been the following offer:
mp only: 25€
sp only: 25€
40€ for both
(coop missions as as dlc you would have to pay for)
and some ultimate version for 60€ that would give you a flatrate for future content

it was sold (ps3 and xbox only) for £26 here for a few days on release, made it hard to get hold of at that price though.

it's really an entertaining game,
the graphics are really good,
and atmosphere and sound rock ...
i played it on ps3 ... the combat in town really rocks ...
going through the buildings watching out not to get to close to the windows there you can get shot ...
I never got so immersed into a fps ... driving around with vehicle and shoot everything apart ...
it's real fun, the only bad thing is the gamepad ... but I am not a hardcore gamer and this is my first call of duty ... so I'm quite fresh concerning this game and can have fun with little things :-)

I have to add:
the graphics and the sound are simply amazing!
the graphics are so realistic, you sometimes feel almost like in a film ... it's simply amazing what is possible with nowadays techology ... I'm really excited what the next generation of consoles will bring to us ...

i was playing the single player, and although some of the set pieces were pretty cool, the core of the gameplay was repetitive as hell. Its get to point x, shoot 20 enemies, go to next spot , rinse & repeat.

I felt the exact same way about COD4, cool set pieces and 1 or two cool missions, the rest was just boring...

That has always been the core gameplay of COD, and unfortunately a lot of other games are following in it's footsteps. COD gets away with it thanks to IW's great level designers and set-pieces, so it becomes an enjoyable game IMO, but the gameplay itself is rather weak. If you put COD gameplay in bland levels, you would have a rather boring FPS game.

I miss the diversity we had 8-12 years ago with Deus Ex, Ghost Recon, Half-Life, Quake 2, Unreal etc. Now all FPS games are about the same pace and feature similar gameplay, where games like Rainbow six has been sped up and unrealistic shooters have been slowed down (I blame consoles and money hungry executives). The few that try something different are often seriously flawed (STALKER is one such game, interesting gameplay but lots of weaknesses that detract the gaming experience.)
