I liked the idea, but the tone alternates too often -- you muddle between a more intimate subjective tone to the much more tiring second-person, public essay format. I was a Features Editor for a 10,000+ small newspaper, and I would definitely print your article with several minor retouches:

I would maintain a first-person, subjective experience of your "gamer/gamer" relationship throughout most of the essay, including more specific, colorful details. For the last quarter, I would widen my scope and come to some general conclusions that you've learned or believe. Otherwise, you have to be snappy and constantly funny to use the second-person voice in a "Your Guide to..." or "How to Spot a..." format.

well actually a non-sequitor is an informal logical fallacy...something one would pick up in a philosophy/logic class or on your way to law school. Just means "does not follow from." If I said "Well prison only serves to make better criminals," and your reply was "Not true, at all. After all, the sun is 93 million miles away." -- non sequitor.

* to clarify * - the "small newspaper" was a college newspaper, but very professional since the school had a reputable tv/r/journalism school. btw, when you dismiss an entire print media based on circulation, you really miss out on some amazing writing, e.g., after college, I wrote some small features for The Ithaca Times, a local weekly that attracted quite a pool of talent based in the same town as Cornell U. and Ithaca College and many, many (over!)educated people.

Your saying you would have printed the article in question (+minor touch-ups), doesn't improve the odds for the newspaper you are talking about...

- matter of taste/art...opinions are like that well-known part of one's anatomy(to be tasteful!), everybody's got one.

p.s. minor touch-ups make all the difference. A "guide to the perils of a gamer dating a gamer" certainly has some pop culture currency and would pique the interest of any features editor -- just poor execution and lack of editing.

Yea in that wiki article, I would definitely say the non-sequitur(oops, I've been spelling it wrong!) in normal speech fits my original intention. And btw, hate to bring up another informal fallacy, heh, but I think you equivocate the term "print" and probably "edit" when you say:

In the above I use "edit" to mean, quite literally, the function of a real copy editor whose job is to evaluate text before it's published for syntax, grammar, tone and adherence to a stylebook like AP, for example. It's a very specific job at a newspaper. However, the real equivocation comes with "print," as I'm using it in not JUST the literal sense, but to mean "publish" as in the old newspaper editor saying "Print that story!"

I appreciate your explanation, and I'm definitely entertained by the stretch of thinking employed -- "you can (or could) edit...I can edit all forum posts...," :) :) but I think your summary about taste is a good place to end and complete the thread.
