Event: ESL-TV QL Inv

Update 3: The VoD of the show is now available.

Update 4: The winners of the 3 competitions are now known.

Winners

The very last Playday of the ESL-TV QL Invitational sponsored by Razer will take place this Thursday. Only one out of the 4 players will be able to compete with

LLL*fox,

noctis and

spart1e on the 3rd of August for the Finals.

The four contenders for 100� in this Playday #4 will be

true, but during the last they were a bit annoying when they missed the start on t7. they went into the game @ 1:20 (sucks, but it can happen) but talked shit for another 2mins and the real commentating didnt start before 3:30 :(

The whole commentary was absolutely terrible until the final games between fox and draven. They were commentating some play then suddenly went off topic for no apparent reason and when I thought 2gd had finally finished brabbling about bullshit because he paused for a second he just lowered his voice a tone and went on for another half minute.

I also know what's going on while watching some football game on TV but that doesn't mean I could stand the commentator talking about taking his wife out to dinner or his general feelings about the state of the economy and neither would the millions of other football enthusiasts who are trying to enjoy the game with good commentary.

2gd and Joes commentary was excellent on the showmatch/qualification day but since then it has gone steadily downhill with hitting bottom yesterday when they missed the start of a map and still didn't manage to go back on topic.

I know most people on here know both commentators and some of them might actually be interested in their off topics but the new viewers who are drawn in by the prospect of watching some high level Quake Live with commentary don't know them and are not interested in hearing them go on and on about stupid shit

i agree, the banter was making me cringe so badly.. they need to step it up in professionalism for sure. just have to take tasteless and sdm as examples in starcraft, their banter is always humourous and most importantly, professional; even if it's offtopic. but normally it is on-topic and they give good insights into the scenes and players, the news that's happening and so on, which makes it very interesting. but i'm sad to say they aren't taking it seriously enough, trying to be witty far too much and so on.

Or they could just focus on the reason most people tune in on the show and for the few who enjoy hearing guys tell stories about people having a barbecue or whose birthdays are coming up there's always daytime television talk shows.

Missing the start of T7 was a mistake that just went bye as Jay was showing people around the map. I didnt notice the start but I dont think its that big of a deal considering how the map went anyway.

well as i said, that can happen, my point was that that you two basicly wasted another 2 after that
now the map was very one sided, but that also means the start was the only interesting part and the game was decided after a few mins
im not here to hate, the casting as a whole was still great and i kinda felt that you contributed more than in the first show(s)

Isn't this a delicate issue because of the way the stream is encoded? Using lower picmip gives nicer textures, but results in harsher compression and increases artefacts, possibly making it look worse and/or harder to follow. I'm out of my depth here, but someone reading this will know.
Just throwing it open to a poll could be a bit dangerous because generally people would rather look at nicer textures when speccing (I can see already picmip 0 is winning), but might wrongly assume the stream would transmit this higher quality flawlessly.
Someone with a clue can reply to this (maybe you), or I would suggest at least testing it (maybe internally).

EDIT: Judging by how the commentators look the stream isn't that compressed and it probably would look fine with higher qual textures...

I agree hkrep. It seems like he won't let Carmac talk much, or make tactical statements. Atleast it seemed that way during k1llsen vs. Guard. Specifically during T7, Carmac makes a statement and 2GD quickly interrupts and states he previously made the statement whilst voraciously going back to action, albeit in a hurried fashion. I must say I'd prefer to hear Carmac a bit more, though I have been in and out of the room. 2GD, stop interrupting so much please. :) I'd really like to hear what he has to say.

2gd was also telling about things like: ready up, im spawning servers, etc etc (thats not professional; no offense 2gd i like what ur doing) ,,, carmac was trying to cut that off and take this esl broadcast a step beyond.

everything went as expected, gamewise.

linkin did well on dm6, awesome rocket guess on the pillars, that destroyed any possible comeback.

gg killsen and sick aim by link1n :) i enjoyed the cast, they did both a great job. in my opinion 2gd is just trying to entertain the audience and that is what counts. an active "advanced" player doenst need the cast at all in order the analyse the games or something like that..
so i think for the majority they did quite well and their aim should be to promote the game itself and gettin lots of new players. perhaps we'll find more tournies with bigger pricemoney in the future.

imo carmac and 2gd didnt really fit together too well. Everytime (before the last map) carmac did a tactical analyse 2GD disagreed and instantly threw some trash shit in and changed the topic, I think that toogood is just too good to really mock people down for their mistakes, which was what carmac was really doing quite a lot, but imo he did it for reason.

Its just like that 2GD wants to run a show always the positive way, like joe does too, but carmac seems to be more like neutral and says what he wants, he doesnt care if its arrogant or unconventional.

This 'partnership' did not work so perfectly because it was the first time we are together and could not find a good balance which would work perfectly.

Maybe the second, third time around it would be better, but it's not going to happen anyway. I was there only because Joe was ill. I am sure he'll be back in his rightful place for the next show.

I thought the chemistry was fine. Hearing different opinions makes it more interesting as a spectator, e.g. 2GD saying GUard should have been more aggressive on T7, Carmac saying he needed to armour up more. 2GD always antagonises everyone, it's not meant to be taken seriously. Sometimes it comes out a bit off, but it's more a missed rail than anything else.
I would be happy to hear Carmac again as a shoutcaster. Joe and 2GD work well together, but it's good to have counterpoint analysis.

about the dm6 start commentatory: you can have the SAME luck actually the other way round: if you get the fast rl spawn your enemy the ya spawn, you can jump down to mh, finish him and take ra.

anyways, in official matches you should play smart and dont mess up ur start by doing that. that shaft attack instantly after mh is nothing uncommon.

the casters went a little overboard with explaining everything that is happening, but at least it wasn't dj wheats extremely nasally nerd voice making embarrassingly bad jokes

it also wasnt very awesome when i first tuned in and the only thing going on was the two casters talking for 15+ minutes

but at least tournaments are happening (regardless of how bad the game is)!

Picmip 0 is definitely not an improvement, in my opinion. Sure, it may look "prettier" but it's also more difficult to see the core of what's going on - which is far more important than eye candy.

And to comment on Carmac's performance - I thought his analyses were actually better than Jay's this time round. This was probably because Jay was distracted having to do the play-by-play.

I keep wondering if there's any point to play-by-play commentary at all. I prefer how most poker tournaments are broadcast: they do a brief intro at the start of the show for newcomers, but then expect their audience to have a certain basic knowledge. In sum, commentary always seems better when the audience isn't patronised. I'd prefer two experts disagreeing about what player x should have done to one of them asking leading questions or just stating the obvious.

nah, I'd say that, just like in every other sports commentary, a simple stating what's going on in the game is crucial to the atmosphere. Which of course doesn't mean that I don't appreciate more in-depth commentary but I think that you should always have both.
