the id ql dev team is quite small, so it takes long time in order to have something *NEW*

The coders and webcoders are working on restoring the leaderboards and adding private servers and all that comes along with said premium package. Separate coders are finishing up the Linux and Mac versions. Mappers are making new maps, both for playing and training. Most all of which will release soon.

we expect these kind of features because the game is freaking t e n years old and has these kind of features for almost this long. the last 3(?) ut releases were accompanied with the same expectations so it's not just quake either.

... and did any of the last 3 UT's meet this expectation of getting this? Or are your expectations typically too much for any commercial game, and are only realized by modders?

actually yes they did in this regard (even if it needed a patch or two). but this is different because i don't understand why i should pay a monthly fee for a basic q3 feature in ql.

What is that premium package thing? Also, how about an option to switch to a server browser similar to ASE? I honestly can't stand the way its now, dont really need to see a pic of the map.

You can already do that with ASE, just write down the server ip you connect to (shown in the Awaiting Connection screen) and add it to ASE. You can see see ping and map name, haven't tried to connect like that though.

The problem with using ASE is that the QL servers go up and down based on demand, so a server on a particular port might not be up the next time you check.

Connecting to a server from an external app would also be a little tricky since (I believe) you need to do XMPP authentication with the server using a value, quakelive.xaid, from the QL site.

*edit: After you connect to a server you can use cl_currentServerAddress to get the IP:port

Marty put up a good description of the premium package @ http://www.quakelive.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11016 . Among other things, the premium package will let people spawn custom servers.

If you're using Firefox, you can use my QL Alt Server Browser script to show a tabular server list.

Honestly, the only reason I see this map still being played is because old schoolers like to keep their ego and ownage in check.

No idea about what it's like in QL but apart from the teleporter thing (Which is terrible) and the spawn points (shockingly bad) the map is really well balanced.

Movement is pretty smooth once you get good and the restrictive nature of some of the doorways is good, not everywhere should be a speed lane to the next item.

I agree that speed is not needed in all maps for sure.
Just never understood why people keep default ID maps for 10 years.

To my mind, the only reason to keep such bad designs is mostly pushed by old players who like to keep their advantage.

Even DM6 can be considered shit but I won't step there just yet :)

This is not meant to be a disrespect to original ID mappers either, they did what they felt was best 10 years ago. The game has changed and map design should change accordingly.

I guess it all comes down to opinion in the end....it just sucks that we keep a map that at least 70% of the community hates and/or refuses to play.

dm6....... doesn't work, can't work and will never work.

It's by no means perfect but I think you've yet to see dm13 for what it it/can be (Again, note I have not played QL version!).

dm13 is okay. fwiw, if I had raised my standards, I would have listed none of QL's maps.

I think getting a lock down on dm13 is more fun than any other map - even more than ztn.

Design - use picmip.

Weapon placements - nice imo, every weapon on the map is useful and they are hardly clustered together.

Lava and tele - personally I feel the lava does too much damage, but its no biggie, its the same for both players and its very rewarding to knock down your opponent. About the tele I have come to like the new placement cause it makes the RA weaker. Also two way teles can be very bad.

10 years ago - yawn, sure I would like completely new maps too but since there is one good new map available right now I dont see anything wrong with bringing back old great ones.

Movement - learn to move around the map, most archways can be jumped through useing +movedown.

Staircase - use the right weapon and it wont be a problem for you.

I think there is at least 25 health too much in the LG/YA room though.

I'm getting the major lag too, but mine I think is from the all digital switch earlier this year. Any game that is ping sensitive feels like poop lately. This is probably largely due to my cable connection, and me living in a suburb, but still. It sucks. Makes me sad to have to play lesser games just because the netcode isn't important in games like tf2, WoW, CoD4, etc.

You click on a search-for-game-with-catchy-name button. The system pairs you up with the most suitable opponent, taking latency into account. Rather weaker/better opponent than a latency above 10ms. There should be a decent mappool:

When the system finds your opponent, the game starts (or you press a button to join the server, whatever). A random map is chosen. It shouldn't be possible to see what map it is before you connect to the server and load the map. Noone else should be able to connect to this server.

When both players entered the server, there is a 45-60 sec forced countdown which can be cut down to 5 sec if both players are ready. The main point is that the match is going to happen and if someone quits during countdown, well then it counts as forfeit. This is done to make sure that people won't quit just because they dislike the map.

When the match is over and syncerror lost, the server dies and you jump back into lobby.

Gamestats are saved and separated from normal gamestats.

I would seriously consider donating skåne to idsoftware if this happened, or didnt happen.

Hmm thinking about it, separate stats would be bad since they should be close to 50% for most anyway. It could also encourage a lot of good fakenickers to try to get as nice stats as possible, which could lead to good players creating new accounts often. That would make the whole idea/matchmaking system worse.

I think this is a good idea. If you wanted you could even do the WC III idea where you can veto a certain map if you REALLY don't want to play it (I advocate this). Other than that good idea.

Yes, and in addition remove the normal server browser for duels, so that people would use such a feature.

The problem that you then create is that you can't play with friends(arrange matches). So make it like WC3 and SC, that you first create a gameroom to assemble the people in and then fire the server up. If you could optionally password protect the gamerooms aswell then you'd have your private servers.

I also think id should add some more community features. Like chatrooms and being able to leave messages at friends' profiles. Such things can make a community more lively quite easily (I think)

You do realize that quake live is an updated version of quake3 right? It certainly isn't a new game.

I dont consider ql to be an q3 update. Its sth like q3 arena² thats why its called ql and not q3 arena anymore.
As I know the intention was to lure new players.... but I dont think ID wants to lure new players with an old, updated game.
If thats the case it is an instant fail!

I dont care about stats, so I change when I see unfairness. This way I got some decent games with quad rushing and so on. I didnt expect ql tdm to be soo much fun.

By the time the switch is needed the other team has pretty much the loss secured, and, in any case, staying with the unbalance is a guaranteed victory.
