Ignore it, how will they know if you've deleted it or not? They know you downloaded it from tracking the packets, but that's it.

I've yet to get an e-mail like that, I live in Canada though. US is pretty bad for it, RIAA suing people for illegal downloading when they don't even own computers.

A year or so ago I know it was legal here to download, but illegal to upload. Not sure the laws now, and quite frankly, don't care. Everyone does it, I know that doesn't make it right, but I'll be damned if I'm going to pay $1000+ for fucking Photoshop.

in the US, it is a standard DMCA takedown notice. no one is getting sued over those. you can also file a counter DMCA (no one ever does), but the process is a bit backward if you ask me. I've gotten three of those. the first one was for the movie "A Beautiful Mind," which I never would have rented or bought (or seen in theaters, but this was well after it was out of theaters) anyway, and I'm glad I downloaded it, because that movie was terrible.

in the US, with these requests, the ISP does not give out any personally identifying information to anyone. copyright holders send DMCA notices to ISPs, who have voluntarily agreed to enter in the liability act to prevent themselves from being sued, who, on behalf of the copyright holder and with the information provided by them (IP address, e.g.), forward the request to the end-user. these are bullshit, automated requests that will most likely never be followed up, and after one or two "offenses" there's nothing to be concerned about anyway. however, if you receive multiple offenses, your ISP may terminate your account. you should not be worried about being sued--this is the reason the ISPs do this, and they've reached a compromise that allows them to rid themselves and their customers of most liabilities.

additionally, the way this happens is that copyright holders (mostly through media groups like the MPAA or RIAA, here in the US) hire out contract companies to join in torrents and gather peer IP addresses, to which they give the copyright holder for subsequent sending to the offending users' ISP(s). by that token, you are only most probable to run into such things when using public torrents or P2P. private trackers quickly eliminate any such users if this kind of snooping behavior is found, so you should not worry too much about that. on public torrent search engines with comments, usually there will be people commenting that they got a notice from their ISP, so if you absolutely have to use public torrents, then check the comments first, as there's likely to be some forewarning. further, although I would not recommend it (from someone who knows something about this, it seems a pretty ineffective and silly concept), some people use programs or software or scripts to block potential RIAA/MPAA contractors' IP addresses, like PeerGuardian 2.

I would recommend using newsgroups or private trackers for most things, but don't worry too much if you get such a notice if you live in the US. be familiar with your country's laws--it may be different there. it's also a good idea to stay away from public trackers and search engines in general, because there are people who upload viruses and other malware there, in various forms. I know some of them. and, of course, the quality of the torrents is usually rather bad.

I got a similar notice after downloading syriana. I was really pissed though because with the notice was the location of the file on my hard drive and it said that further action would be taken if I didn't remove the file from my hard drive. Invasion of privacy much!?!
