Philip K. Dick is one of the best sci-fi writers ever. It's too bad he died a few months (two?) before the first screening of Blade Runner.

Books or movies?

I think the Matrix movies apart from imploding at the end are great sci fi films, full of campy, belief suspending action. The Terminator films (1 & 2) are great, the tv show is rediculous I couldn't watch more than the first ep. All the Alien films are good, the first 3 being brillaint with Aliens standing above the bunch as the best. Although I think Finchers third is overlooked too much, I guess you suffer being the one to continue the franchise after someone like Cameron.

Having mentioned Cameron I still think The Abyss is one of the greatest sci fi films ever made. Perhaps not on par with 2001 artisticly or metaphysically but it can be enjoyed all the same.

As far as Books are concerned I havn't read any Arthur C Clarke or Heinlen but I have read alot of Simmons and the Hyperion Cantos and The Ilium / Olympos duology are just mind boggling. Orson Scott Card is great too although the man himself is abit of a nut.

Agree with pretty much everything you said except alien 3, and I haven't seen The Abyss. I really liked Hyperion and the follow-ups, but I had a hard time getting into Ilium, I don't like greek mythology much. Anything by Orson Scott Card you can recommend, any particular books?

Looking forward to Cameron's Avatar, been a long time in the making.

To be honest, alien 1 I don't like too much either, just alien 2 a lot. I think action or adventure(maybe some comedy) are usually the only genre that works for me from the 80's. Old horror or thriller movies aren't particularly scary for me. Alien 3 I haven't seen in a while though, so maybe I should give it another chance.

I normally love sci-fi but found Hyperion incredibly boring. Ileum was ok. Read some Alistair Reynolds and Peter F. Hamilton if you're after good sci-fi. All of the original Dune series are worth reading but none of the same universe books by other people.

Orson Scott Card is a bigoted religious fucknut which puts a darker spin on his books. They're weaker after the first in any case.

I personally liked Hyperion/Endymion, but it's true that Dune is on another level. I also liked the first three books of the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov (published in '51, '52 & '53), but found the following two a bit disappointing ('82 & '86).

Silent running I found horribly bad, I watched it with a friend and a bottle of wine, we just laughed at it the whole way. Immortel felt a bit shallow story-wise and was mostly just nice to look at.

Haven't seen Darkstar though.

Might have to give Dune a chance, I'm just coming off a big load of regular fiction, might be time for some epic heroism :D

Dune is the shit, it's ridiculous how good even Heretics is without any of the major characters from previous books (Idaho aside)

Alien is a good horror movie, which is a rare thing indeed.
Aliens was cheesy dirty dozen -esque 80's action, the whole creature was inflated + the queen sucked.

Going to back that statement up by actually explaining what makes them bad?

terminator2 is a kids film and a full on arnie cheesfest (maybe nothing wrong with that but still quite a disappointment after the genuine dark feeling of T1)

alien3 had none of the subtle horror of the first, nor the action of the second

abyss, best of the 3 i guess, but a derivative story and one dimensional characters

anyway i'm crap at writing this shit, i just hate these kind of unoriginal films

First two seasons were ok, but after that I started to dislike it.

Other shows evolve their characters. In Bsg it seems they throw a dice every third episode to see what the character does next.

Twelve Monkeys' a great movie with time travel, even though it's not a book adaptation.

I wish a talented director could adapt Dune again today :p James Cameron is directing two upcoming sci-fi movies though, Avatar (2009) and Battle Angel (2011).

Oh I totally forgot about 12 monkeys :) Good pick, on that note another great sci fi film I forgot was Brazil! Fantastic film. The film adapation of 1984 (with john hurt) is also very good, and very faithful to the book.

I LOVED Brazil :D I was going to mention it but it's listed as "fantasy" and not sci-fi on imdb, but that movie's incredible :p

While I'm not a huge fan of his other films it's a real shame Alejandro Jodorowsky's proposed Dune film fell through in the funding stage. It sounds as though it had the potential to be amazing though a unique entity from the books. Here's the kind of talent which would have been involved:

Orson Welles as Baron Harkonnen, Salvador Dalí as the Emperor, Mick Jagger as Feyd Rautha, Alain Delon as Duncan Idaho, Geraldine Chaplin as Lady Jessica.

Then as far as the creative process goes he had Dan O'Bannon for the script, Chris Foss, Pink Floyd, H. R. Giger and Jean Giraud (Mœbius)

In fact O'Bannon and Giger took a lot of their ideas/creative work for the movie into what they did on the first Alien movie according to their own testimonies.

Some of his ideas are totally off the wall in comparison to the book but seeing as how it's difficult to film a book that dense with concepts that might not have been a bad thing. Plus Orson as the Baron has perfection written all over it.

SOLARIS (w/ George Clooney) is so often overlooked but that movie was absolutely stunning, imo. Remake of an old Russian film of the same name, afaik. The movie gives me goosebumps everytime I see it.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with the details of the original. I saw the remake, which I thought was excellent, I suppose I need to see the original to get a better appreciation of where it comes from.

Either way, I really enjoyed the remake.

I enjoyed the 2002 version a whole hell of a lot more than the original. There are some Tarkovsky films I consider brilliant (Stalker and Offret) but his Solaris was incredibly dull and I say that as someone who enjoys intellectually slanted movies. Soderbergh's version ignored a lot of the more metaphysical/psychological questions of the book/original but the way it was shot was gorgeous, the man has a hell of an eye for shots/colour when he's not making derivative Hollywood crap like ocean's X.

last nite i dreamed i was in Bosnia caught in the middle of an ethnic war in some random villages.

when i reached their camp i was like "o hai comrades!". people there looked busy as in starting a big operation. i was rushed / pushed in a truck almost by force with other soldiers and i was about to head somewhere for a "clean up" job. "shit.. what have i gotten myself into? i don't want to be a part of this more than i already am" was one of the last thing i remember, then i woke up.

this summary doesn't include a lot of vague/confused/sureal moments or happenings that made the WTF factor go through the roof.

now that i think about it.. how the fuck could i have a dream in such setting? i mean.. i haven't seen anything lately even remotely related to the balkan wars from the 90's..

same with Roy really, for some gay reason (stupid at that) I was expecting the same sort of ending as the film, something as dramatic if you could call it that. Just felt flat reading the book when it came to the final showdown really.

I didnt like Scanner Darkly all that much, just couldnt get "in" the story and actually care about anything that was going on. Maybe it was because of the visual form of the flick.

I think mostly the dark humor got me in A Scanner Darkly. I was that guy in the theater laughing hysterically while everyone sat uncomfortably in silence =(

Primer was great, saw it a few years back. I and the guy I saw it with sat around discussing it for hours. A very multi-layered script, very cool.

Ironically that's another movie where the director's cut is great but the original is borderline ruined by things being left out and a stupid voice over.

They're both good movies if you've only seen the theatrical cut but in the case of Blade Runner the removal/additions really change the interpretation you'll take away. It's definitely superior, plus the recently release 'final cut' even has some subtle special effect tweaks Scott has gone back and re-edited which are nice.

For Dark City it's basically that if you notice the voice-over at the beginning it explains a whole lot of the plot which you really shouldn't need to know at that point of the movie, it's better to figure it out as you go.

Althought I don't agree with the casting of Arnold for the lead role in Total Recall, I think it's probably one of the best movie adaptations of Philip K. Dick's work. You can't even tell at the end of the movie whether the whole movie was a dream, real, or implanted memories -- the essence of PKD! Ambiguity ftw! xD

I'm pretty sure he is, and the hungarian blade runner from the end as well is a good possibility, he also seems to have the unicorn dreams, or least know about them. Possibly all Blade Runners are replicants.

You can see it right after Deckard washes the blood out of his mouth at home, the yellow glow in his eyes, it shows up in everything artificial, and him as well, although very very subtle.
