Hey there Diggers, remember that Quake 3 game you played ten years ago? Well now you can play it again, but this time in a browser!!!! But wait, that’s not the only difference; after you stopped playing Q3 id fucked it up by “fixing” “bugs” like floor and rearranging great maps like dm13 and tourney4 so now it’s a lot worse than when you last played it. You’ll be excited to know Quake Live continues the decline and now every map has at least 100 armours and a megalealth that respawn every second so what little strategy there was left in the game is now gone. So why not come join the other 10,000 beta testers who played the game for a few minutes, decided it was shit and then never played again.

Sarcasm aside, you’re wasting your time trying to get general gamers interested in Quake Live. Survey’s like the one on IGN gamers aren’t interested in the game. Look at the popularity rating on Gamestats:

A massive score of 0.5 out of 100! Five million players my arse! Nobody cares about the game and when id are lucky enough to get someone to play it they usually only play one game and then never play again. I sent invites to three friends and none of them played anything more than the warmup game, and most commented that the graphics were crap. Most gamers need a game to have good graphics to get them interested so they’re immediately turned off by QuakeLive’s decade old engine. Gamer’s also need a $20million marketing campaign to get them interested and I can’t see id investing that sort of money in selling QuakeLive given the lack of interest in the game. The game is already dead and I’ll be surprised if it’s not cancelled completely when they fail to attract advertisers.

I really don’t care anymore. I decided that if I’m going to play an ancient game that nobody gives a shit about I’m going to play the best one and am back playing Quakeworld. I really had forgotten how exceptional the game is - fast, high skill but above all else it’s extremely fun to play.

Thanks to the community the game is now even better and it has everything that an id game should have but doesn’t. You don’t have to bother with console commands to set your preferences since ezQuake let’s you configure pretty much everything from the menus (something id still can’t get right with Quake Live). In one click you can have all the textures, detail and effects turned off without the need to go searching the right console commands. Other things like bright skins (which are actually bright) and HUD layout can also be configured from the menus. Another thing that has impressed me greatly is the bots. Since I’m out of practice I’ve been playing the bots to get back into the game and I’ve found their playing style is very human like unlike the laughable Q3 bots.

Judging from ezQuake, CPMA, Q4Max and the like it seems that the Quake community has far more talented developers than id Software. Despite having a team of developers working full time on Quake Live they’ve been unable to match the level of work community developers have done in their spare time. Alarm bells are ringing!

If you haven’t played Quakeworld in a while do yourself a favour and install nQuake and have a few games on dm4. You’ll be amazed how fun it is.
