I think it's a really great movie, just not 9.2 great. 8.5 maybe. But Ledger did a great performance. One of the best I've ever seen, maybe the best. Can't really remember seeing anyone doing a better job in any film I've seen.

Comic books are actually quite intellectual at times. I never really read BATMAN comic books, but if you bash a movie just because you think comic books are for kids i think you're a bit off.

Comic books like Watchmen, V for vendetta, Sin City, Sandman, Preacher etc, are actually very well written, with good dialogue etc.... It's not Donald Duck you know :D
Of course you're entitled to your own oppinion, and I do think ppl look at movies with too high expectations at times. But when it comes to this movie, I honestly think it had some very strong points. Action Scenes (especially the IMAX ones) were beatiful for the eyes and the ears. And the acting by Ledger (wow!), Bale (not bad!), Aaron Eckhardt and Oldman was very good I think. Of course Michael Caine isnt bad, but he had such a small role so its hard to say :)

First of all Batman is not a typical cartoon hero. Actually calling it "cartoon" is sort of an insult. You know why Christian Bale wanted to play in Batman adaptation? He read "Arkham Asylum" by Grant Morisson and Dave McKean. Check it out (it's available on torrents). Be sure to read "Killing Joke" by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland too. And "Dark Knight Returns" by Frank Miller. These should change your view on these things.

I agree that some dialogs were cheesy (it's a PG13 movie after all), but the big thing is that the film managed to capture the darker side of the whole Batman franchise. And it wasn't as dumb as other superhero movies (I wouldn't call it "a superhero movie" anyway). Besides: you are the one who actually treat it too seriously. All these cheap talks about good and evil were in the background - the most important thing was the action. And as the action movie TDK is a masterpiece. The suspense were all over there, the tension between Joker, Dent, Batman and Rachel was pulsing non stop. When you thought you spotted a cliche a twisted swing comes on. Really, I didn't have so much fun on the action movie since "Heat" (btw some inspirations from that film were noticable).

Probably your approach to a "cartoon heros" lost you - I see no other reason why somone could say he was bored during the movie. It last about two and half hours but for me it was too short...

Another thing is that comparing such movies as "The Dark Knight" to "Godfather" is kinda flawed. Watching an action movie expecting a deep, artistic values, etc. has as much sense as watching dramas and whining about a lack of action. You just can't say "Batman sucks cause it's not Dostoyevsky". More probably if it would be a Dostoyevsky it would suck. You know what I mean... And IMDB rankings? Who fucking cares? Before "TDK" "The Shawshank Redemption" was the best movie there. Says it all.

The actors were good. Everyone who complains about Maggie Gyllenhaal should watch "Batman Begins" once more. Katie Holmes was a disaster there. For once the scientology was useful. And Maggie Gyllenhall was perfect for this role imho. She's has not a top model kind of beauty but she doesn't need to. She plays a Wayne's friend from the childhood who then become a lawyer - so she's not a typical playboy's lover. She's more like a girl next door with an ambition.
Bale was ok but Batman's role is not a good opportunity to show off your actor skills. The bad guy always steals the show anyway.
Caine, Oldman, Eckhardt - nothing wrong with them as well. Oldman's acting is actually pretty amazing.
Eric Roberts - bad as always. But he was funny.

P.S. What do you mean by saying the movie was exaggerated? Overhyped? Too long? Something else?

Too long, too many things happened at once and somehow it felt messed up. I treat this movie seriously becouse it was serious, serious movie with totally unserious action going on.

What frustrated me the most throughout the movie is that they tried to make it realistic, not totally out of the world. Burton's pingwin is totally out of this world and grotesque so I wasn't analysing him, his actions and so on. The problem about new batman is that it tries to be something more than it is meant to be, but it fails. Characters were flat, one sided.

If you want some details I need to watch it again and do some notes.

your interpretation of the dark knight is like internet explorer's interpretation of a bad web page. if anyone took the film so seriously, that is because the film took itself seriously, and you must be doing some serious logic juggling in the back of your head to convince yourself that it didn't.

people can have flawed understanding of a film--your post is a good example of just such an understanding--but the film itself is responsible for setting the mood, and for telling the viewer how things should be taken. the dark knight failed majorly at this, if its attempt was to do anything in light humor, and that seems to me a contradiction with your assertion that batman isn't meant to be "cartoony," all the while saying that others are taking it too seriously. which is it?

this film was poor. it was long, drawn out, had nothing to show for all the time it spent. if you can create a good two-hour+ movie -- if you can come up with enough good content and have good reason to do so, then go for it. but if you can't, then don't. the dark knight spent two and one half hours leaving me waiting and unimpressed; the good content never came. there was never any caring for any of the characters: they would introduce characters and get rid of them at a whim, not bothering to build any of them up in any meaningful way, and then magically resurrect the shitty characters with boring "plot twists" that made me laugh at their stupidity.

the acting was wooden: ledger's "acting" was pretty poor and monotonous, as little of a glimpse as I got of it, anyway, seeing that he was really in relatively few scenes. bale's acting was ridiculously bad; the voice was barely coherent, the dialogue was something that I, in fact, think I wrote verbatim in a screenplay when I was 3 years old, and the emotion and sense of reason that he failed to inflect into his voie and actions convinced me that I would probably try to kill batman if he were real, and I would probably succeed, because he's a one-dimensional fruit-cake and I'd get a lot of chances since he only ever kills random passer-bys on the street, firing missiles at them, in collateral damage, because batman does not kill people.

this movie was very incredibly average, and to live in a world where even more than a few thousand people thought otherwise, I think, means that I can perhaps sympathize with batman's appraisal of gotham city, in analogue.

imo this movie could have been saved if they had done ship-scene better. i thought batman would have no choice but to make one of these ships explode. that would make him become a villain and complicate plot of the movie much more. or something like classical greek conception of fate.

My juggled logic simplified for you:
1) Comics about Batman are less cartoonish than other ones about superheroes. That justifies darker tone and more realistic approach of the movie adaptation.
2) Despite being dark, slightly more realistic and even having some philosophical and political motifs "The Dark Knight" is still an action movie, a summer blockbuster, a commercial flick, it's rated PG13, it's about guy in latex suit, it's main purpose is to entertain, so on, so on - and as that it can't be treated as another "Godfather". Just like even the best graphic novels about Batman are obviously not on a level of Dostoyevsky.

Simple as that.

yeah, watchmen is absolutely epic, possibly the best comic book ever

It's another example of something that is good being drowned by hype that it can't possibly live up to. The action was done better than Batman Begins. The acting was fine, Gary Oldman being superb. The good vs evil thing was fine. It was all fine.
It's just not the second coming.
It is trying to make something of a political statement, but some of it has a dangerous direction. The joker being used as an example of a terrorist being a dodgy one, and the 'it's okay I promise to switch off the super Big-Brother machine' being another.
But it is just about a guy in a Bat custom beating up a guy wearing face paint. It's the best superhero movie of recent times by miles, but that's not saying much when you see how awful stuff like Superman Returns was.

Oh, and imdb is fundamentally fucked because none of the Three Colours trilogy is even in the top 250 :p

Generally I had problem with caring. I didn't give a fuck whether he will kill everyone or not and so on. It wasn't even interesting, becouse from the very beggining I somehow knew how it will end. It wasn't that hard to figure out. Rachel's death was the only surprising moment.

There are many ways movie can give pleasure. Godfather is freaking boring for me as well, but somehow I enjoy it. It's like porn movie and opera. Both can be fun ;)

In Dark Knight I had a feeling that something is wrong about that movie, mostly with plot and composition. I can't give you any details, becouse I have not enough vocabulary and knowledge but my artistic sense developed by years of creating, watching so called "art" kept tickling me.

I just wish the producers of these films treated them more so that way and cut out all the cringe worthy dialog and uninteresting back story to leave us with just an hours film of pure action. It would have been much more of an adrenaline rush then, instead of trying to give this pretense about having a deep story line.

aronofsky is the only consistent, interesting, integrity-having contemporary, "main-stream" director that I'm really aware of. pi was excellent; requiem for a dream was not half bad, though I have not watched it in a long time; the fountain, which I just recently re-watched, was much better than I recall it being, and, whether it may or may not be as good as his two other films, it does show a certain depth and ability to keep producing interesting films, which I don't really see in any of the other modern directors I'm familiar with.

I have to say that I am quite skeptical of his upcoming projects, on the other hand. he would not be the first decent director to delve into depreciation.

Darren Aronofsky (sp?) is great, but I'm a Charlie Kaufman man myself. Especially his work with Michel Gondry in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Superbly made movie. Captures aspects of human relationships and the human soul more than any other movie I've personally seen.

Charlie Kaufman is a writer. He's only directed one film that I can see, and it wasn't Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which was an ok film. That said, Adaptation was utter garbage. Please don't say that guy's name again.

How the hell is he supposed to be able to put explosives in the entire hospital, the two ferries, without anyone noticing? Throughout the entire movie he just does what he feels like doing without ANYONE being able to do anything. I mean, even the bank robbery at the beginning, if you think about it, there is NO WAY it could work (nobody coming to see what's going on with the bus rear-ending the bank, the space between the other two buses at the exact right time...). Suspension of disbelief only goes so far. Also, the whole plot about the random employee somehow stumbling upon the plans of the batmobile etc was really stupid.
At the end, couldn't they have said it was an accomplice of the Joker that killed Harvey Dent?...

How is that relevant? :o My point is that imo the film suffers from how much power is given to the Joker. It's to the point that everyone in Gotham is helpless to prevent him from making his next move, even something as big as completely destroy a hospital on short notice and put explosives on two major ferries. This has nothing to do with the suspension of disbelief that is to be expected with such movies (Batman being able to do what he does etc).

it depends on the cinema. for example in switzerland, primarily you will see movies in its original language and subbed in german and french.

let's say 15years ago there was almost no dubbing here at all but since then a few multiplexes popped up that screen dubbed only. it's scary.
but i think original language cinema will always be no1.
