The point is, that hazards such as the one in the video can happen EVEN if you are not driving recklessly and are paying full attention. However, if the speed limits are obeyed, then the damage done in these situations will be greatly reduced.

It would be a lovely world if the only cause of accidents were reckless/unattentionate drivers. Fact is, that is not the case.

People should be keeping to speed limits, I didn't say otherwise but if you want to reduce deaths then attention and care is the issue, not speed. These campaigns always erroneously focus on speed when data from people like the AA show that this isn't the main cause of accidents.

The point is pointless, if a car hits your legs against a wall at 20 mph or 40 mph you don't have any legs.

Yes, both issues are a problem, this ad is targeting speed limits. There is similar data, showing life and death differences on whether you are hit at 20mph or 40mph. At 20mph, that car might not even touch your legs, while at 40mph it will mangle them.

Of course reckless driving needs to be combated too, although that is harder to define and educate. It is a very gray area; even someone who is driving after an argument with their partners can be reckless drivers (my mum and my friend both crashed their cars under those circumstances). Then there are the obvious people who drive under the influence of drugs etc.

Keeping to the speed limits is easy to state and follow, there are no subjective situations, it is a very simple measure, and it does save lives and minimize / completely prevent accidents. There should be similar ads targeting reckless drivers (there probably are).

But, there will be accidents even if there are 0 reckless drivers.

Although this video deals with speed, imagine a similar situation where all drivers are driving correctly, fully aware and under the speed limit. A dog can run out from an unnoticable location, and cause an accident. No matter how good and slow the people are driving. A large amount of accidents come from unpredictalble situations.

After a few accidents you tend to slow down anyway, I went from average 160km/h to 100km/h after a bad accident, which was about 2 years ago, I still don't go above 100km/h.

It might be a violent advert, but you cannot call it FALSE. I mean its a FACT that if you drive your car WAY too fast it will be close to impossible to react on most situations because a) people arent good enough drivers, and b) their cars arent made to be able to dodge stuff that happen instantly at 140km/h.
Most people I talk to that want higher speedlimits are people who strives to drive as fast as very possible every chance they get, that is without being a good driver. People tend to overestimate their driving skills WAY too much, and for some reason think they can do 90 degree turns at 150 km/h like someone from a Need For Speed game.

Not seen many argue for higher speed limits in residential areas where you've something to react to. But on the motorway you're basically driving straight with little distraction, assuming you keep a safe distance everything should be fine.

There's no reason why it should be 70 over 80 or 90 other than slower is safer in an accident, which begs the question why 70 not 60...

Where I live people driving like 120 in residential areas is not too uncommon. Quite often they are young BMW owners :)
Besides, if you've ever been in an accident (like, full frontal hit) you will know how hard it is to avoid hits when you are surprised. Animals getting hit in sweden are quite common because we have alot of forrests etc. Even something like that can actually be lethal and completely destroy your front end, and obviously kill the poor moose :(. Alot of the times its simply the driver underestimating the speed, and overestimating his ability/car.
Obviously not all the time though, sometimes you cannot avoid whatever accident happens, but driving faster WILL make it harder, thats a fact :)

Well I rarely speed on highways. Actually I'm so focused on my fuel economy I drive about 48-50 mph in 65mph zones (79km/h & 105km/h respectively) I usually don't go above 80km/h. Other drivers don't hate me that much.

When my car was new though I was interested in seeing it's performance as it is quite sporty being a manual transmission. Even then it was mostly going around corners at high speed or hard acceleration until I hit the speed limit. I only went over 160 km/h like twice with it and once to test it's top speed.

One of those times described above I was cornering at the limit of grip and hit a patch of sandy grit on the road and went into a slide I had done a 180 in my lane and left huge skid marks before I was stopped. I was probably going 70ish km/h downhill. That was scary but not dangerous there was no traffic and nothing really that I could have hit near by.

It just shows you don't have to go that fast to fuck up. Especially when you're an inexperienced driver. I wouldn't mind if the speed limit were 55mph (90km/h) on all roads in this country, but it would never happen. By the way that would be more for saving energy than reducing accidents. I think driving while drunk and the easy driving exams that we have are responsible for many more accidents. (i.e.: drive around for 8 minutes on residential streets and in parking lots with a automatic transmission car and you pass if you obey the laws and can park.)

But in all the months since I started driving this way I have never seen somebody give me the middle finger after they passed me.

I do try and be considerate though if the traffic is getting heavy and people can't easily pass me I'll speed up to 60mph until the cars are less dense and no one will get stuck behind me.

I'm not driving this slow for any other reason than saving gasoline and thus money and the environment. I am in no way illusioned to think going 50 on the highway will make me actually a safer driver than those going the speed limit. I've got to be just as alert and attentive as everyone else.

Well, if possible I drive 180km/h on the autobahn. But thats not really the problem. The problem are 18 year old morons that just got their licence and think they can drive. Due to my work I drive 1000km's a week, and I often see those guys taking risky overtakes, getting too close on high speeds and driving too fast on country roads with huge trees to the left and right..... I think speed limiting wont prevent them from doing this. In some cases a huge tree does though.....

Did what happen in the video was the punk in the civic went out to pass, then a dog ran into his lane, and even though he wasn't even half ahead of the orange car he swerved. Then somehow his car lifted up, rolled about 15 times and was unlucky enough to come to rest pwning that dude against the way?

And then the driver of the orange car was slow in the head too, after he flipped the civic he just continues on his merry little way as if like "yeah happens all the time" Then nearly 3 seconds later after he drifts out of his lane and isn't watching the road he head-ons another car. The driver of that one had to have seen what was happening up ahead for just as long. Neither made any attempt to hit their brakes it seems.

Not even the girl was smart she saw what was happening for 2 seconds, give a .3 second reaction time (non gamer) as if she couldn't have jumped up and out of the way in 1.7s time.

The video is should be renamed what do you get when you put 3 poor drivers on a road, let something unexpected happen and then throw in a ton of bad luck. They should show commercials of real life fatal accidents so it doesn't look as staged.
