There used to be one or two german chans (#geheimlevelduel and another one?) which specifically had newbies of all sorts in them... not sure if something like this exists for the non-german folks :/ both of these chans kinda died some time ago anyway.
I'd start playing tdm publics it's a lot easier than starting with duel -also ca or even ra3 is a way to get some aim first if nothing else works.

just hop on pub servers, there should always be some games going. 1v1 or 2v2 can be very hard as a beginner, most people are quite skilled nowadays and will just destroy you.

what he said... do not play anything but true ca (clanarena) in the beginning. There should be LOTS of active public servers out there. Once you got the aim thing down and start owning ca a bit immediately leave and never return but instead pick up tdm - and duel if you want once you realized how to time items/dominate the spawns.

Well if the UT one revolves around standing at one end and railing/(Sniping whatever) then yeah it's the same.

In a way ra3 is unlike the ut version because we got a serious scene behind it and you'll end up playing very competitive people if you do not stay with ca.

Still it can't compare to 1v1/tdm. It gets rather tedious after a while and you'll never learn how to play properly if you play it exclusively like I did for years.
Ra3 completely misses all the dynamic features of deathmatch: No item/spawn/map/whatever control at all... the dodging is heavily influenced by the ability to rj without losing health... it can get very hitscan heavy. Plus there's quite an amount of spam and boring camping_behind_corners. Basically with the skillset you learn here you will not survive in 1v1/tdm.

Use qtracker/k-query/ase to find servers near you. I'd be the last to be able to help you as my dsl sucks.

the ut version has like 90 teams in the clanbase oc & has 1000euros (i think) of prize money in an esl cup
all i play in 2k4 now if tam (our ra3) wit the occassional 1v1. its prob the same wit q3; boring hitscan from across the map wen theyre high skill; spam (which i like) with lowers/ppl having fun
