Very nice, really like it, very little of that opc freestyle twenty rockets at once bullshit, wish there was even less of it. I like how you show real tricks on real maps :D

I really like the fact that shaolin productions works with such a high standard for movies from their hand. The only thing they lack is originallity and creativity. To do something "new." Every movie is very good, dont misunderstand me, but they are all alike. Except for tricking It 2, the first extremely good trickjumping movie from the hand of SP, all the movies are some sort of follow up, hence, I won't remember them. The only one I remembered was the movie with the programmed stuff, which WAS original.
Maybe a bad example, but if you were rich as hell, and you already own 15 ferrari's, how glad would you be when you received your 16th?
I know I'm asking something which just is too hard to be done, since you guys just like trickjumping a lot, but you could at least try. How bout the idea, of actually "creating a storyline", with some sort of crazy pursuit with the sickest trickjumps, not because they can, just because they "have to them tricks" in order to stay ahead of his pursuaers, or smth. I know I'm not shakespeare, but I hope you get the point, a bit. :)

trust me, it's not about lack of creativity ;) i keep getting ideas similar to the stuff you mentioned and i do know that all the others in SP do as well. however, most of the time, we work with footage provided to us by people from the community... those who want to see their stuff in a 'frag-movie'. that's where the risk of wasting their content by being experimental comes in. i'm actually studying screenwriting for films myself so i would LOVE to incorporate something like a storyline in a quake movie and make it more like a real film. however, i don't think i'd do that with a video where i've asked people to submit frags... if you get what i mean. i wouldn't want them thinking later on "oh my super leet frag was wasted. i wanted to see it in a real frag movie"

this way, tchouky's and termi's vids usually stand out because they're doing bot movies / machinima. they can try and shape the content to fit the movie. when making a frag or trick movie, we usually make the video to fit the content. if you relate it to something in real life, it's kinda like deciding between making a beautiful art film to please a select few or making a 'commercial' movie which would appeal to a wider audience. maybe you remember mrks' Reaching Aural Nirvana. personally, i think it's one of the best videos i've ever seen but so many people bashed it because it wasn't their usual trickjump movie.

I get your point, and I understand why you wouldn't "do such a thing" to the people who participated doing tricks. On the other hand, you should make movies because you love it, and not only to please a big audience, I mean, you're not getting major $$$ for this, right? :)

yea i may not get any money for it but i enjoy making movies for the quake community. maybe someday i should just make one for myself and see if people would like that.

To me one of the attractive parts about editing a movie remains the aspect that i'll entertain people with it (heck it's the main reason why i'm doing game design as well). As we've seen with tchouky's anti-confirmists, mrks' reaching aural nirvana and in the hollywood business any of the films by the director of a Scanner Darkly, movies which have something extremely innovative tend to have a very small audience.
Now it's still on my to-do list to create a movie which is extremely creative; fresh and innovative, but i fear it will never work out and that the target audience will either not watch or dislike it. That's not a good way to start your 'editing career' so to speak.
By making this video I had a) fun; b) good practice; c) a chance to gain some reputation.
My next video will be more experimental (along the lines of RAN, but different), and i'll see how that turns out. If people tend to like it I might eventually show up with some weirdass surreal movies like dahli did his paintings for all god knows. But only the future will tell.

I can see your point tho; something refreshing is always welcome; I'll do my best to get something working in my next vid :]

:) When i mean something refreshing I wouldnt directly to extremely surreal or abstract shit, I just mean, different camming, different music, different concept; but same editing skills and content (tricks or frags). This would be killer!

i haven't seen it yet, but i have to agree. first person stuff in tricking vids these days seems very rare, almost left exclusively for filler during the credits :/

i like pov stuff much better than 3rd person, it's always very disappointing to see something in 3rd person and think 'wow, that would have looked amazing in first person'. especially speedcaps.

and i dunno anyone enthusiastic enough to search through the demos for it, except for maybe a few people from opc, i'm sure not :( that's what a movie is for, it's the lazy-man's demo :D

Wow, amazing vid!

The editing was extremely well done. Anyone who says otherwise probably has no concept of what goes into the editing process.

Like someone said earlier, I love the map tricks. Doing random tricks on some freestyle map, to me at least, is boring. The tricks, of course, were godly. (Only prob is that some of the speed caps are soooo damn quick you don't have time to prepare for what you're about to watch in the first viewing --> def requires multi-viewings.)

Everything was just well thought-out and done with extreme competance. The recams were great. Good 3rd person when it was acceptable, and 1st when needed (mostly the cpm-map trickage).

I remember a gripe I had earlier about some of Shaolin's vids being too clean, smooth, soft-focused, etc. But I think you've moved away from that a bit, and I like it. It had an almost gritty feel to it. Gritty but crisp.

Music isn't my style, but that's just based on taste... But the mixing was done well and the songs transitioned well.

Another thing, the quality was perfect. I watched the vid on my crappy 800mhz computer and it ran smooth and perfect, which is extremely rare, and the picture quality looked flawless.

There was a cam-wallclip in the outro/credits. Kinda distracted me for a second, but I like how the cam went over the beaming overhead, which was very tasteful.

Ah yes I agree about the clipping, noticed that too, so 0.1 point deduction!!!! However the thing you noted is absolutely true: the vid worked flawlessly on my old 1Ghz pc with amazing quality, which more than equalizes the few flaws it has.

arf ya :< forgot about fixing the wallclip. My pc can't play x264 either; so i know what a lot of people feel like, and thus decided to go for an extra +/- 30 mb filesize but enabling more people to watch this properly.

With everyone having at the _very_ least 2mbit I think the days where file sizes matter are over.

everybody? :P doesn't work that way i'm afraid. when i was in india i only had 256kbit. even though i'm in canada now where they do have upto 10mbit... i'm stuck with a 1mbit in my room on campus.

nah but srsly. the ratio between people having low-end systems and people having low-speed i-net connections imo tends to be more for the system specs.

Not everyone has a highspeed internet connection! And even if they did it's no excuse to do a half-assed job and not optimize.

great vid, crazy content. nice to see a consistency run by mew on cpm15, even though it wasn't very long :) i didn't mind the editing at all, except if i had my way, only very few of the tricks would have been shown in 3rd person, maybe 5 tops. it's always nice to see a 3rd person, THEN the first person pov of the same trick.

i'm almost tempted to watch it again, but the music doesn't really have that re-listen value to it :(

I really enjoyed the movie. Nice editing, nice soundtrack, nice semi-useful tricks on well-known maps and the (imho) lame and worthless 500x rj tricks on 40000000m3 maps kept to a minimum.

Since nobody ever seems to write proper comments anymore and I want to feel myself special, I'm going to write down my thoughts (for what they are worth) on this movie!

Despite what many others seem to think, I found the movie quite refreshing and different when compared to other trick jump movies that have been released lately. Sure it has a trance-based soundtrack like your average movie, but it also has a very unique feel to it and especially the first half of the movie really shows how trance can be edited to without making it extremely boring and repetitive. Not a big fan of trance, but when it's done correctly it really works wonders.

Some of the transitions being synced to the music came off as a surprise, and being a sucker for sync I really loved them (talking about the tilting, zooming and skipping here, not the flash transitions :P). I don't follow the movie-making scene outside ut2004 / quake3, but for me those transitions were innovative at least. Something that made me think "damn, I wish I had done something like that". The small custom sound clips blended in with the music worked in some of the cases, but there were a few ones that I found mainly just annoying, for example the laughter at 6:20 and the "I love the-the moon" at 7:58. The train horn at the intro text also sounded oddly familiar, you didn't take that from half-life 2 now, did you?

Can't say too much about how skilled the tricks were like since I have never actually tried tricking myself, but for someone like me they at least looked impressive, and the same probably applies to most of the viewers of this movie. Most of the time the velocity changes worked decently, but there were also some bad decisions like the changes you made to mew's RA jumps on cpm22 that were mainly distracting and confusing.

I found the text layout enjoyable, even if the font reminded me a bit of Mercurial. The text spreading slowly at the bottom was a nice touch instead of just having them fade in and out like usually. I've always enjoyed speed runs more than tricking, so I found myself wanting to see more ctf fast caps, even if they aren't exactly "the real deal" when compared with proper speed runs. The main gripe I've had with most trick jump and speed run movies has been the severe lack of 1st person material, so I was glad to notice that you used a lot of it. It just comes off as looking more skilled and difficult when compared to having a camera spin around the player like a rabbit on crack.

Effects-wise this movie kept it pretty much to the basics without any omfg-in-your-face-ownage, but I've never liked complex overwhelming effects to begin with. The wall screen at 8:25 was pure mint though, I've always wanted to do something like that myself but never found a proper place for it. Loved the text effects in the intro and outro as well. I've always hated bright flashes in movies, and luckily this movie only had a few of those and even then they weren't exactly blinding either.

Also nice to notice that although you try to make professional-looking movies, you remember to keep the fun in it as well, as seen with mew's pitfall and Ace of Base awesomeness at the end. Cracked me up properly :D

Now go and do another one, preferably fragging! ;<
