define call centre work, if you mean taking calls or working in a call centre then no, if you mean designing and developing contact centre routing and systems (inbound/outbound/web media/email etc etc) and IVRs etc then yes.

The more i do conventional 'work' the more i dislike it really.

It doesnt even have anything to do with my job itself (which is ok) or my colleagues, who are great.. its just i dno.

Getting up every day at 7 , only to listen to your boss whining all day, coming home at 17.30 being tired and basically being unable to do anything fun since u cant stay out late or so anyway or dont have the energy for it. Just seems like their should be more to life than living in function of your job.

I honestly cannot imagine myself working for 40 years, hell i'm having trouble imagining myself working for even 2 more years.

I agreed back when I had a really shitty summer job shuffling files in some archives. I really enjoy my job now though, but my free time with friends that aren't at work is definately suffering. Will work for a few years or more, get much money and go live in some cheap part of the world(surfbumming on some pacific island? :D) for a few months or maybe a year, get an interesting life, and go work again if I need more cash.

But I am really fortunate to have a job that I really enjoy, so I may end up working really much. Not sure that enjoying my job, producing content and hanging out with workmates is all I want to do though.

it's not fortunate mate, it's deserved.... well it is if you went out and looked for that line of work and pushed yourself towards it.

It drives me mad when people whine about their line of work, or hours, or pay, yet are not willing to go out of their way to make a difference.

well, there is a small amount of talent involved, and intelligence etc. Some people might just not be smart/talented enough to get a fun job. A shame that the more repugnant and shitty a job is, the less you get paid for it. The ones who really enjoy their job often get tons of money.

Well, I've been building levels on and off for about 8 years now, and I didn't consider that I could be working as a level designer until about a year ago, I didn't build my skills with commercial interest in mind. I'm also quite lucky that I live in Sweden where there are good games companies but a lack of decent skills, so companies lower their standards, and recruit out of the mod communities, and don't require past industry experience etc. A mix of luck and hard work :D.

Here we have three out of 60 people that don't speak swedish, everyone just speaks english around them :D And I know for example starbreeze and DICE have quite a few people that are english only. You should be fine.

Congratulations to voodoochopstiks (again, think I wrote in your journal about it a while back), it doesn't matter if it's a job or hobby or absolutely useless waste of time as long as it's something you like to do. And you do deserve it! Saying there is no luck involved is plain stupid though (which you didn't, hence <3). Nothing comes for free but sometimes the cost for the same thing for different people varies a SHITLOAD and then saying it's "fair" or not about luck at all is retarded.

I am not oversimplifying things sometimes people are lucky yes, but not that many are and there's no point in dismissing the rest of the working process just because some are fortunate to have connections or come from a wealthy background. It's about you, not them. (not you in general :) )

Everyone I know with good well paid jobs, have bust it out in college then university, or work obscene hours for the things they want. People what stuff instantly, they want qualifications without the the years of learning then they want the experience to land well paid jobs without working a while beforehand earning that experience.

I don't mean to be bitch or anything by the way :p just way too many people at work are doing my head in lately with the "oooooh I wish i had a better job worth good money!" Especially in this day and age where the opportunity to learn and get involved in new things is crazy.

Ah, well yeah opinions are formed after experience I guess, not like either of us is wrong or not even reaaally disagreeing, just a bit tilted to different sides. If like you said EVERYONE you know did deserve what they got (and got what they deserve) it sounds great, just not very much like how I've percieved my immediate reality.

Ofc it does not apply for all jobs, but when employers make a choice they go through a number of factors, if there's 10 people who are all reasonably equally qualified (which is more than common) then things like first impressions, personality, looks start to become deciding factors.

We're not talking about what you're really like, we're talking about how someone else perceives you in the limited interview time.

If it's a job flipping burgers or an open minded company then no one cares, but if you example it's at a bank or a highly skilled job then more often that not you will be remembered as the "long haired guy" and positive images do not always go hand in hand with that stereotype, as is the same with people have have skin heads and earings.

I'm not debating this. It's a fact. if you're going for a job as a guitar teacher then great, but if it's a job in an investment bank then i wish you GL!

I cut my hair from beyond shoulder length to 2cm a few weeks before applying :D

(Also had to do with looking good for graduation, the heat of summer and a bunch of other stuff :D).

On the other hand, there's about 3 or 4 long haired people working at my company, but I guess games development is less prone to care about looks in general. But I found that cutting my hair(imo) made me look smarter, more intelligent & more attentive, I also have an easier time dancing/doing sports since I can actually see what the fuck I'm doing :D. I've been getting mixed responses about it purely aesthetically. I guess how a hairdo looks depends on how it goes wit h the rest of you too.

Long hair is nice in the winter, bad in the summer, hence I cut my hair about once or twice a year :D

But if your idea of having fun/sparetime is not working, living off state benfits and playing Quake all day, I can tell you its not fun. Done it for 8 months and all I got for it was a fat ass and an unexplained absense on my CV. which was hard to explain to the next employer.

Some people are night owls and that makes it hard if you can't sleep until 1-2am.

Ive done that also dont worry :P Although financially it wasnt too bad cause of poker. Cant say it made me fat though, on the contrary, i'm still as slim as ever.

And yeah i'm a total night person, nothing i dread more than getting up early every day. I crave for a nightshift job if i really do have to put up with work , too bad those are non-existant in the computer business.

I did that for many years and got bored of the 9am till 5.30pm routine with 1 hour commuting each way - WTF!? 10 hours a week sitting in traffic jams breathing in fumes - great!. So the last couple of years I've worked for the same company (one of the largest IT companies in UK) and I work nights now, all my work is project based for mostly blue chip clients and it's great fun.

I know the hours don't suit most people, but I go to work at 8.45pm, and get home at 4.45am, so I sleep from 5.00am until 1pm, which gives me about 7 and half hours in the day to enjoy the lovely sun and enjoy life :). It takes me 20 minutes of my time travelling to and from work each day so I saved 9 hours a week and less stress from stupid traffic jams too. ....I'll be playing golf at 2pm today while most people are working! then going out on the town later :)

As for golf being an old man's sport, I kinda agree but I only play 18 hole pitch and putt these days, playing golf long term isn't very good for your back. I find pitch and putt is more fun!, and today I saw mostly younger people playing it, and even a group of 5 girls together who kindly let us go ahead and play our hole first*! :-))

I don't think you will find a 4 bed with garage for £300k down south, here 4 beds with garage go for a little less than that in my road and much more as you go further out in the suburbs, and the south is much more expensive?, BUT ... i would never rent, it's like throwing money away in my opinion unless your company is willing to give you some contribution for relocation costs.

in some circumstances renting is dead money, however, im not going to buy a house for say £200k as they are not in places i want to live. also, im moving from 140 miles away, im not sure on different areas so renting short term makes sense, gives us an opportunity to look around and find somewhere appropriate to buy.

the other thing is were still young enough to not need to worry about having our own home, i will never have a 25 year mortgage anyway and going forwards i'll be earning enough to pay for a house before my planned retirement at 50/55 (can retire at 50 at new job iirc, the pension is fantastic, they contribute 15% now, planned to raise to 22% next year and in a fe years looking at 33%, by 2010 ill be paying 7% contribution myself!!)

I don't think anyone has a 25 year mortgage now, I've had a mortgage for 4 years now since I was 25 and I chose the Virgin One Account which at the current rate means I pay mine off in 15 years (my repayments are peanuts!), but there are better ones out there now, I forget the banks name but it's easy to compare these days.

I think the price of houses today are crazy, I bought mine 4 years ago but did put a very large deposit down but trebled+ my £80k mortgage value with the housing market going crazy

yeah, in 5 years we made £100k on 2 houses. absolute crazyness, as tbh, 1 of them was noway worth what people paid for it. but i dont set house prices, so i was happy for them to pay it :D
