I found someone that knows better than coming with a senseless comeback (and BTW, I'm "french" -I follow a french education, speak french as my native language, I have/am raised following the french culture; what I tried to show here is that prejudice is useless, all americans are not stupid rednecks driving fords.) This cleared up, we can come to a real debate.

What this law was meant to do is to help people find jobs, as the French unemployement rate is *VERY* high, young people worry about their future (which is perfectly understandable). This law was really a way to help them; what prevents people in france to hire 'new blood' is just due to the fact that fireing someone is a warpath (you have to give them social BIG help for a LONG time) and this CPE was meant to motivate employement. Sure, you can get kicked out for no damn reason, but if you do well in your job -and profit to your employer- there is no reason in the world he should fire you. The problem here was the length of the thing, 2 years is two long.. but I am sure that reducing that duration to 1 year or so would have really helped.
This also reveals a fact about the way democracy works in france: the people really scare governements.. but it is not by protesting all the time that you will help anyhow. They should take example from Germany (which does strike, but while working -they have syndicated supporting them in their cause). French people see the people they are working for as enemies willing to take all their rights away; what they should see them as is "a thing" providing them food and shelter, everyone should go in the same direction or else nothing will push the enterprise torwards success.

ok, but somehow I don't think there are many iranians (sp?) playing baseball. So when you said "everyone except europe and australia" you must mean a larger group of people. Cuase I definately know a lot of europeans plaing baseball, probably since I use to play it myself ;)

The Dutch had a baseball team in the World Baseball Classic, they didn't do too bad either.

this is a really difficult discussion and I'm not gonna take part in it especially since I'm not sure what my opinion is. I just want to point out two things.

There are several reasons why someone could be fired after a short time even though he did a good job.
e.g. He was hired with a in mind short project and now there are no projects following.
A woman gets married and expresses her wish to have children.

Second, even though the Germans are not striking as much (since the majority of the people doesn't really back strikers) in bis companies they still see their employers as enemies. Nnot people they shoud cooperate with.
Actually, here the term "manager" has a bad ring to it, as someone who wants to become rich fast and not help his employees.

I don't have the example underhand right now, but there was a case where employees accpeted certain "concessions" (for example: freezing pay raises) to maintain the compagny/their job alive. (It was a car manufacturer, either Volkswagen or BMW).

But this might be an isolated example, but I can tell for sure that people don't strike as much as in France anywhere in europe

it was Volkswagen and even though there are some more cases like that, it is still not like the people see the management as their allies.

That's true few people care about baseball outside America and especially the national american league (no, American leagues are not world championships).

American sports known by esr users would be basketball (although it's a minor sport it's well known) and ice hockey, quite popular in northern and eastern Europe but all are by a large margin less popular in the world than football (yes soccer if you like).
