If you have cl_autoTimeNudge set to 1, then no value of cl_timenudge makes a difference.

It will do exactly what it implies, automatically adjust your timenudge internally based on what it thinks is best (it will not go lower than -20 though).

If set to 0, you can change cl_timenudge to values between 0 and -20.

I think that if your ping is 10, no timenudge value will benefit. That's my opinion though.

You could also probably tell just by setting it to -20 and seeing if yellow shows up in the top line of the netgraph when on a LAN.

It's entirely client side.

The client realizes it's on a LAN and disables it. (it already disables TN when spectating, so a test is already there).

It either does this by considering the client's ping, or by considering the IP address of the server it connects to. I'm inclined to believe the latter since I think sponge mentioned something to that effect.

You don't need timenudge at all unless you're pinging over 80

in my experience it only made stuff worse after 80 ping....

do not use it or you will get banned because it kinda aims for you

autotimenudge is nice if you got packets loss/ unstable ping. Let's say your ping is 60ms, 3 seconds later it's 80 then 60 again and then 2 seconds later 90. In that case, timenudge (with autotimenudge 1) will automatically be adjusted to your current ping, so basically the value of timenudge will change according to your ping's fluctuations.

But if you got stable ping, still quite high (starting from 70-80ms), then cl_timenudge is the most appropriate command. It will stay the same no matter how your ping fluctuates, but in this case, you got stable ping, so, like i said, cl_autotimenudge is unnecessary :).

I believe cl_timenudge has been implemented to help people with a ping higher than 70-80ms, and let's say that if you get a ping below 55ms, timenudge is useless and can result in some weird behaviors. Why ? because there's already the anti-lag kicking in and working, but afaik, the antilag stops working at 80ms and above, so using for example timenudge -20 with 90-100ms makes sense and can help a bit your hitscans.
But, like i said, using timenudge with a decent/low ping can mess up with the antilag, so it's not recommended to do that.

I think it's a lot more personal preference than this. Plenty of people like the effect of TN and ping ~50 or so. Some people swear by -20 and others swear by 0.

i don't agree :D it's not personal preference. It's almost like saying that antilag/unlagged is personal preference ;).

timenudge made sense in Q3 OSP/RA3 back in the days, because there wasn't any kind of strong antilag like in CPMA.

OSP and RA3 had "raw" netcode, which meant the lower your ping the better, and that for all weapons.

CPMA on the other hand had strong antilag/unlagged, so basically it was possible to play with 100ms ping even vs someone who got 30ms without too much of a disadvantage.

QL netcode is pretty close to CPMA's (say hi arQon :D!), and almost nobody used timenudge in CPMA, there's a reason for it : antilag and xerp :D.

timenudge can be useful in quakelive if you get high ping >70-80ms because afaik, like i said already, above 80ms the antilag stops working, so having some kind of interpolation/prediction can be usefull with this kind of ping :)

What other conclusion is there to come to when:

1. Timenudge 0 vs. -20 at less than 80 ms has a substantial effect.

2. Many players with less than 80 ms use high TN values and like them a lot (wouldn't want TN to go away).

3. TN can shave up to 20 ms in delivering player position information at the cost of smoothness and imo reliability.

I have usually a ping of 6 on a duel server I host myself. Without timenudge the hitboxes kinda lag behind the enemy model. This is most noticable when im in ZTN underneath RA with rail and my oppenent jumps to the GL platform. Often when I shoot him while he makes that jump I still hit him even though he was already just on the platform, so theoratically shoudnt have been able to hit.

With cl_autotimenudge or cl_timenudge -5 or -10 this situtation never occurs.

On the other hand, without timenudge, when I shoot at an opponene when hes moving and I shoot kinda on the front side of him (so the other side of where the hitboxes are lagging behind) it does not register. This is something I notice often on the jumppad in Overkill.

So both settings have their advantage and disadvantage. I always used no timenudge cause I kinda liked it when I could still hit somebody in that RA position I discussed or to still hit somebody with rail when hes just going around the corner. But since a few days I've switched to cl_autotimenudge 1. I just cant stand it any longer than I'm 100% sure i hit somebody with rail but it doesnt register.

So it's your pick and for what it's worth Fazz and K1llsen also use alot of timenudge with low pings. In the end I dont think it makes a world of a difference.

imo from what i know on how timenudge works there is no yes or no to your question. Timenudge makes the model appear quicker at the price of jitter. Some people like no nudge on low ping. I like -20 on whatever ping.

Instead of making a new thread I'm gonna necro this one. I used cl_timenudge -20 for years and I remember it made enemy movement choppy. However now after moving and changing ISP I'm not seeing choppy enemies when using any cl_timenudge or cl_autotimenudge value. Is there an obvious explanation for this? Is there a way I can verify if timenudge is even working? I did check lagometer and I do see yellow when a value is set for timenudge. It doesn't seem like it's working though. I'm very used to aiming with -20 timenudge choppiness so I hope there's a way I can play that way again. My old ping was ~60 and now it's ~50 if that is relevant.

Negative timenudge makes it easier for things to get choppy when there are connection issues. You probably had light packet loss and/or jitter with your previous ISP.

This timenudge command nonsense is overrated. It's specifically used by people who complain they're not hitting good enough or have 999 other excuses they're failing ingame, blaming other people who supposedly nudge or have other means of an unfair advantage.

The command is useless and should imo be renamed to cl_whinenudge imo.
